[Archived] AFC Darwen v Blackburn Rovers XI

Recommended Posts

To be played at The WEC Anchor Ground, Darwen - Tuesday 22nd July 2014 - 7:45pm KO.

The club have agreed to send as strong a squad as possible and hopefully one or two bigger names.

A great opportunity to come and see the facilities and support two local clubs. Grass roots football clubs need all the support they can get.

Come and see Rovers' Stars of the Future.

Prices and further details to be added soon.....

I was over at the WEC Anchor Ground the other week as my lad was playing in a cup final, lost 4-2 against Rishton thanks to a dodgey Ref ;) I was pretty impressed with it all, great little bar / clubhouse decent food etc overall was an enjoyable venue to watch a match.

Forgive my ignorance, but is AFC Darwen the rebirth of Darwen FC? Did the old Darwen FC go to the wall and AFC started it again, so to speak?

Darwen FC was folded in 2009 due to previous owner issues. AFC Darwen was almost immediately formed under new ownership.

Cheers, I thought the fact that AFC was in front of the name, meant something like that had happened. Good luck with the club, I think I will pay the Anchor a visit next year, when I am back in England.

It's showing my age, but I couldn't get past AFC Bournemouth, John Bond's team of big name posers in the 70's. I loved it when John McNamee and co spoiled their promotion dream.

Good luck to Darwen, though!

I remember it well, so showing my age too, I guess. Oh happy days!

Be interested to know who the "big name posers" in that Bournemouth team were?

The most remembered players were Ted MacDougall & Phil Boyer, both signed for nothing by John Bond from York and with excellent careers ahead of them

The kind of players we ought to have been picking up on at the time!

They had an excellent season and came 3rd that year, and, quite correct, a late 2-1 win for Rovers at Ewood was one of the results which cost them promotion

For many years the gate of 48,000 which watched Villa play Bournemouth that season was the highest ever in the Third Division.

McDougall for one. Big name poser in the third division, as far as we were concerned. The Blackburn End even had a song about him, based on the flour advert...

big name poser? He had never played any higher than the Third Division at that point!

Like most fans, you probably mean he was a damned good player who did a good job for his club so even the cretins among support everywhere knew his name

not surprising either -he'd scored 42 league goals the season before and scored 35 the season after when we locked horns with them, not to mention nine in one FA Cup tie!

Are you his Dad?
