Rovers Bid For Cantona

Recommended Posts

Mr Walker thinks big and, as he himself stresses: "This is not a small club. We are a big club."

That should be pinned somewhere on here.

At the time though Uncle Jack wasnt aware that there was a bidding war for the copy right to the name 'big club' between Newcastle and Birmingham so this statement will have to be retracted

There were chants of "Who needs Cantona when we've got Wegerle" at the time. Still makes me cringe to this day. :)

I think it was Jack's way of saying hands off Shearer,

I did my bit to help though!

"An east Lancashire restaurateur reckons he's got just the thing to tempt footballer Eric Cantona to Blackburn - a free French meal.

The restaurateur who owns the Auberge French restaurant in High Street, Rishton, is a lifelong Blackburn Rovers fan.

And after the Ewood club's audacious £4m bid for the superstar this week, he was keeping his fingers crossed that Cantona would sign.

He said: "We are all Rovers fans at the restaurant and it would be great to see Cantona coming to Blackburn.

"Just to give him an extra inducement, we thought we would offer him the best French meal he has ever had - if he signs for Rovers.

"We will cook him anything he wants, whether it is snails or frogs' legs.

"So come on Eric, come to Blackburn and we will show you some East Lancashire hospitality, French style."

Sherwood was a midfielder and Cantona was a forward

I wasn't comparing their positions, I was taking the mick outta how we refused Zidane because we had Sherwood but replaced his name with Cantona just for a cheap laugh. I couldn't even get that. I feel let down and ashamed. :P

It was when the rumours were circulating regarding Shearer wanted by united. Was there ever an official bid, think there might have been.

Different article but more comments from Peter White...

http://www.lancashiretelegraph.co.uk/news/6201253.A_game_two_can_play/

"Ewood Park authorities have been fed up and frustrated by the summer-long dirty tricks campaign being waged by United's tabloid press stooges - that of trying to unsettle and poach Rovers ace Alan Shearer against a background of bids, talk of staggering sums and ridiculous rumour.

Thus, if there is an element of mischief in the approach for Cantona - and, oh, how the thought of losing him must cause palpitations among the United hordes - it will be appreciated here in East Lancashire as a welcome instance of Old Trafford being given a taste of its own medicine.

Two can play that game, says Uncle Jack."
