Ryan William Nelsen (born October 18, 1977 in Christchurch, New Zealand) is a cental defender, and current captain of Rovers [edit] Lifes and Times Before RoversRyan grew up in Christchurch, New Zealand, and was a talented sportsman, representing New Zealand in age group cricket teams aswell as football. Ryan attended Greensboro College in the United States, on a scholarship, later transfering Stanford University where he graduated with a Political Science degree. Ryan was drafted 4th overall in the 2001 MLS SuperDraft by D.C. United. [edit] Rovers Career (2005 - current)Ryan joined Rovers from D.C. United on a free transfer in January 2005. He quickly established himself as a first team player, helping secure Premiership safety for Rovers with some solid perfomances in the center of defence. Ryan early on in his Rovers career was given the nickname 'The Admiral' by the fans, because of the similarity of his last name to Lord Nelson, and his commanding performances. [edit] On The International StageRyan plays for the All Whites, the New Zealand National team, who he recently has been restored as captain for during the upcomming World Cup qualification campaign. Ryan made his All Whites debut against Poland in 1999, and currently has 34 caps, scoring 7 times.
