The Irish Rovers hosted a 5 a side tournament in the Blackburn Rovers Indoor Centre straight after an unfortunate 2-1 home reverse against Portsmouth on March 27th 2004. Amongst the invited teams were the Irish Rovers, two London Branch sides, Lancs supporters, BRFCS, and 'A Heartbreaking Side of Staggering Genius' - a team assembled by BRFCS messageboard member cn174.
After a closely-fought and fiercely competitive tournament, 'AHTOSG' took the title despite losing to one of the London Branch teams in the final game. It was noted that the youthful makeup of the side resulted in a key amount of fitness that carried them through. Also, the best player, Ismail Wadee, was an Arsenal fan. The victorious side contained: Clare Nolan, Mark Whalley, Richard Preece, Nick Pearson, Ismail Wadee, Ian Dodds.
The success of the tournament meant that it has become a permanent feature in subsequent years as a traditional end-of-season get-together.
