Birmingham City 2-2 Sheffield Wednesday

Brum would have been worried at the weekend after striker Jay Stansfield was taken off injured, but evidently it was nothing serious as he was back in action here and opened the scoring with a half-volley in the 9th minute. By half-time the teams were level, however, with Jamal Lowe capitalising on numerous defensive errors from the hosts to bring the Owls level. Despite being on the back foot, Wednesday would go ahead in the 76th minute. Yet another fantastic free-kick from Barry Bannan set up 19-year-old striker George Brown to put the Owls ahead. They looked to be on their way to an unlikely three points, but suffered the cruellest of blows when Birmingham’s Demarai Gray crashed in a shot off the underside of the bar to level things up in the 99th minute of the game. Yeah, the 99th minute.

Birmingham will ultimately be grateful for the point, and their run of playing at home without losing increases to 29 games, but this is a poor result for them. They remain in 11th. Despite the incredibly disappointing ending for Wednesday, it was still a decent performance from a team who have once again been told they won’t be paid on time. They also move nowhere, staying in 23rd.

Blackburn Rovers 1-2 Swansea City

For significant portions of this match, it seemed like – much like many fans - neither team really wanted to be at Ewood on a Tuesday evening. After a dismal first 28 minutes, a looped, deflected cross from the lively Ryan Alebiosu was headed in by skipper Todd Cantwell to put Rovers ahead. That would be where our joy ended. Swansea’s Goncalo Franco would equalise just before the break, and then in the 67th minute Rovers’ substitute Kargbo lost the ball, languidly jogged back and watched as Liam Cullen scored his first goal of the season to put the Swans 2-1 ahead. Rovers should have had a penalty when an errant sliding challenge from Swansea’s Cameron Burgess certainly appeared to catch Cantwell in the area, but the referee waved it away. Cantwell, incandescent with rage, got himself booked. Rovers’ boss Ismael followed suit.

A fifth defeat in seven games drops Rovers into the relegation zone – 22nd. Who would have known that last season when Gestede was talking about exciting times he was seemingly referencing a fight for survival this season? One minor crumb of comfort is that Rovers at least have a game in hand - at the moment. Swansea surge up to 8th – with the amount of draws across the division lately, any win is going to see a team jump numerous places.

Bristol City 1-1 Ipswich Town

Although Ipswich had more control of the game in the first half of this one, it was the Robins who took the lead in the 18th minute, with Rob Atkinson heading in from a corner. Ipswich would soon restore parity after being awarded a penalty in the 52nd minute. Jack Clarke converted for his second successful spot kick of the season, and his third goal in four games. Ipswich pressed for a winner but would ultimately have to settle for a fourth draw in seven league games.

Bristol City fall a little further to 5th place – still with just one loss to their name, but drawing too often. Ipswich sit in 13th, but they do have a game in hand.

Hull City 2-2 Preston

It’s been a good start to the season for Preston, and things looked to be continuing in that vein as within ten minutes they were two goals ahead at the MKM Stadium. Hull’s leaky defence allowed Thierry Small and Michael Smith to net their first goals for PNE. However, the signing of Oli McBurnie has proved to be somewhat of a masterstroke for Hull thus far, and it was the experienced striker who stepped up once again to score a brace and give his side a share of the points. McBurnie now has six league goals and four league assists to his name after eight appearances.

Hull creep up to 19th, Preston slip just outside the playoff spots into 7th.

Leicester 1-1 Wrexham

Leicester love a good draw recently. This is their fourth in four games. They went ahead in the 36th minute through Welsh midfielder Jordan James, who finished off a lovely thirteen-pass move from the Foxes. It was the introduction of £7.5m signing Nathan Broadhead that changed Wrexham’s fortunes, with the former Ipswich man sweeping the ball home in the 77th minute after Lewis O’Brien forced Leicester’s Victor Kristiansen into a mistake and set Broadhead up to finish.

Leicester’s penchant for gracefully sharing points with their opponents sees them getting increasingly closer to the outer fringes of the playoffs – down to 6th. Wrexham are 15th.

Middlesbrough 0-0 Stoke City

A second successive game where Boro have dropped points, although their unbeaten start to the season does remain intact. Also a second successive draw for a Stoke side who have only won once in their last five matches. They’d consider this one a well-earned away point, though, and Boro will probably be OK with sharing the points in this one as well. It was a match where both keepers shined, and did their part to stop any goals from going in.

Boro remain top and undefeated, but it should be noted they’ve drawn three of their last four games. Stoke now haven’t won in three, but are still 3rd as it stands.

Sheffield United 1-2 Southampton

Just when Sheffield United thought they were getting going at the weekend, they are brought back down to Earth with a thud within days after enduring yet another home defeat. Tyrese Campbell had opened the scoring after 28 minutes, making it seem like the Blades would pick up from where they left off, but it wasn’t to be as Saints’ Scottish striker Ross Stewart scored in the 51st and 58th minute to hand all three points to the visitors and grab his first goals of the campaign. Chris Wilder managed to get himself sent off when, outraged by a penalty being given to the Saints (which Adam Armstrong skied over the bar), he booted a ball into the crowd as the teams went off for half time. As you’d expect, that led to a red card. Wilder did immediately go into the crowd to apologise to the person he struck, but yeah, stupid way to get sent off.

Sheffield United remain bottom, having lost seven of their eight opening matches. Pitiful. Southampton’s Will Still will breathe a sigh of relief at getting a much needed win, which hauls his team up to 14th.

Derby County 1-1 Charlton Athletic

James Bree kept up his recent good form as he smashed the ball into the top corner in the 27th minute to give the Addicks’ the lead at Pride Park. He now has two goals and two assists in four appearances, which isn’t too bad for a right-back. Derby had to wait until the 77th minute before Lewis Travis sent the ball into the box after a corner was cleared, and centre-back Matt Clarke rose to head the ball into the net. His first goal of the season. Derby had the better of the game overall, but as with so many Championship matches over the past five days or so, this one ended in a draw.

Derby continue to float above the relegation places in 20th, whilst Charlton will be quite happy sitting in 9th place.

Millwall 0-4 Coventry

The Den is usually where Millwall build their momentum, but not so far in this campaign. They’ve managed just one narrow win at home in the league, and were soundly beaten on this evening by a Coventry side who are making it clear they are in the mood to return to the Premier League. American striker Haji Wright has been in great form so far this season, and a brace for him in this match sees his goal tally for the campaign rise to five. Late goals from Ellis Simms and Kaine Kesley-Hayden heaped further misery onto Alex Neil’s beleaguered Lions. Lampard’s Sky Blues remain unbeaten, alongside Middlesbrough, and have fired in an incredible 22 goals in just 8 games.

Despite this heavy defeat, Millwall are still 12th. Coventry remain in 2nd position, now just two points behind Middlesbrough.

Norwich City 0-1 West Brom

Norwich supporters must be wondering if they are ever going to see their team pick up a point at home this season, let alone actually win a match at Carrow Road. Five home games played (cup included), five home games lost. Down they went at home again, this time to a West Brom side who got back on track after losing two and drawing one of their last three games. Josh Maja scored his first goal in nine months in the 20th minute, in just his third start in the entirety of 2025. Norwich now have just two points from the last twelve available.

Norwich continue to drop, now in 19th. West Brom return to the playoff positions, moving up to 4th.

Portsmouth 2-2 Watford

Despite scoring early and going into the break ahead, Portsmouth’s poor form looked set to continue as they found themselves 2-1 down within 11 minutes of the restart. A volleyed strike from the edge of the box from 19-year-old right-winger Yang Min-hyeok, on loan from Tottenham, had given Pompey a dream start. Curiously, on 35 minutes Watford manager Paolo Pezzolano withdrew Australian Nestory Irankunda – the winger was not amused, making his feelings to the bench very clear before storming down the tunnel furiously. Irankunda’s  replacement, Rocco Vata, appeared to justify his manager’s decision by setting up Imran Louza to equalise a minute after the restart, and then poking in a close range effort himself on 56 minutes to put Watford in front. The Hornets couldn’t hold on though, as Portsmouth’s recently-purchased Australian striker Adrian Segecic bagged his third of the campaign – and his first since mid-August – to draw the sides level on 79 minutes. So it remained, yet another draw in a league which seems increasingly amiable to sharing points.

Portsmouth are 17th, Watford are just above them in 16th.

QPR 0-0 Oxford United

Not a result that does either club much good. QPR’s recent momentum continues to stall, whilst Oxford have still only won once so far in eight attempts. QPR dominated this one but found themselves unable to break down a resolute Oxford defence – the lack of attacking quality in this match is perhaps best demonstrated by the fact there were 22 shots from both teams – and only one effort from QPR was on target between either club. Not a good night to be a spectator at Loftus Road.

QPR are 10th, whilst a point for Oxford means they clamber over Rovers and out of the relegation zone, into 21st place.
