Twenty years ago today, a testimonial match for Tony Parkes took place at Ewood Park, following his departure from Rovers in the 2004/05 season.
This was actually Tony’s second testimonial after a game against Everton in May 1983. A Select Rovers XI, managed by Kenny Dalglish, faced Mark Hughes’ 2004/05 squad in a thrilling 7-3 which included some excellent goals. The attendance was 13,584.
Highlights included Stuart Ripley crossing for Mark Atkins to head in, captain Craig Short’s goal on his last appearance for Rovers, and two stunning long-range curlers from Paul Gallagher. Alan Shearer scored in front of the Blackburn End and was later replaced by Simon Garner.
