[Archived] Music Discussion Thread

Recommended Posts

I don't really read this thread but presume people have a reasonably wide interest in music. Last night we went to see The Ukelele Orchestra of Great Britain which probably sounds like a very bizare way to avoid Casualty on the box. Having very little idea of what to expect we had a great, if somewhat strange evening, entertained by seven very talented ukelele players. For the show they have taken footage from silent film, not movies, found in the British Film Institute and set the music to match the film. Now I know how this sounds slightly odd (!) but it is highly entertaining, very funny in places and there is no doubt these people can play. If you get the chance to see them do so, make sure the performance is called "Ukelelescope."

Ukelelescope

Saw them on Jools Holland once, doing a great version of Come as you are by Nirvana.

I wonder if Bentley Rythm Ace still exist?

Think they split up about 10 years ago didn't they? They were brilliant though, I still play their stuff pretty frequently now.

Went to see Yeasayer last weekend and they were amazing, the sound was brilliant for such a small place. Fans of Animal Collective etc will probably like them.

Is no-one else livid about the axing of BBC 6Music? I can't believe they're getting rid of it, it's about the only consistently good thing the BBC produce.

The argument is to do with reducing money spent on digital, as well as promoting 'quality over quantity'. How the hell has BBC3 survived in that case?

It costs more for Chris Moyles' annual salary than it does to run the entire 6Music station for a year. It's disgusting, I hope their are real protests. I know a lot of musicians and DJs are very angry, many have already spoken out.

Me too LeChuck-Extremely peed off at the plans. 6Music is the only music program I can listen to, I hate commercial radio and 6Music plays a super mix of contemporary and old (mostly session) stuff. As for Chris Moyles and his ape-like cohorts, well anyone who listens to them deserves what they get, which is brain melt.

Think I posted this a few years ago, but this is a free internet Northern Soul site. Great for parties where you can't be arsed any more. Put it on and switch your computer screen off and tell people it's from your own music library.

Ozz, I don't know if you remember, There's A Ghost In My House by R Dean Taylor. A Blackburn Mecca soul classic in the 70s? A few months ago it was on the outside radio at work. One minute some pop 3 minute ditty, then out blares R Dean Taylor! Wtf, I thought and just had to go out and stand right under the speaker to get my fix. Blackburn Mecca, Saturday or Sunday night, mid 70s, some great memories!

Indeed I do CLB, a classic, later covered by Mark E Smith. Which reminds me, I read Smiths autobiog last year. Weird book, It's basically one long rant about how the majority of the world is crap. As for Northern Soul, I missed Wigan Casino, Mecca, Twisted Wheel etc but there is still a really good Northern Scene that does the rounds. Late 80s I used to go to The Trafalgar at Samlesbury, which was a good night. One of the things I like about the Northern nights is the habit the crowd have of applauding the DJ after he plays a great track. Good manners out on the floor!

BBC Salaries in 2007

while Radio 1 breakfast host Chris Moyles took home £630,000.

Since then he has taken a 20% pay cut along with a few other high profile BBC members of staff.

From what I understand cutting BBC 6 music will save in the region of £6m-£7m(i presume annually). So not sure where you get the comparision from but it seems a bit off. Jonathon Ross earned £18m, although he is leaving so there will be a big saving there. Graham Norton gets a big salary, maybe BBC should chop him.

BBC 6 music gets 695,000 listeners a week

Radio 1, over 10 million. Chris Moyles alone gets 7,7m.

Radio 2, 13m

Radio 3, 1,874,000

Radio 4, 9m

Radio 5, 6m

1xtra, 531,000

Figures from: Mediauk.com

At the end of the day if it isn't getting a large enough audience then it isn't what the majority are after and if cuts need to be made then somethings have to suffer. Is 1xtra for the chop as well?

It's still at the consultation stage so if you make your views known to the BBC board they will take them into consideration.

FHM had a small feature about a girl who is die to be the next big thing in pop. She's in America recording with Mark Ronson at the moment and has had a single produced by Frankmusic.

Nothing too unusual except that she used to live opposite me in a small village in Herefordshire. Look out for the name Ellie Goulding.

I posted this backin September and would like to congratulate ellie on her number 1 album and brit award.
