Hi Tris good to hear you enjoyed the day!.  :D

Agree re: referee, Gillespie and Dunn but have to totally disagree with your assessment of Cole. Thought he worked his knackers off today (ditto Villa) and was our most effective player. (Not that that was saying much!)

Nothing at all has gone for him in front of goal this season, and this goal the proverbial rebound off his arse on the line could well kickstart his season.

The comments on Dunn and Cole are spot on. I think this comfortably cements itself as the second best post of the year, behind the We Will Fight Them On The Beaches one before the Celtic game.

Dunn is beliving his own press. One substitute appearence for England - congratulations. He can't tackle, his passing is wayward, and his head drops when our backs are against the wall. Stand up and be counted or we'll pack you off to Chelsea for a ridiculous sum of money.

Cole has done nothing for me this season as well. Its all very well talking of injuries, but when your only goals are as a result of poor goalkeeping from an ageing has-been and a last minute "poachers goal" against Southampton then something's wrong. GS broke the bank for him. He did the business last season, but then he had an England place to play for. If you're not motivated to play for us now without adding to your selection of caps then stand aside and let Egil work his b*llocks off for us like a proper striker.

Wow, you've inspired the aggresive side in me Tris. Good stuff  :tu:

I do agree to an extent about Cole, but then too be honest, his goals are the type that we were lacking before he arrived to the club and eventhough they may not be classy goals like Zola or Henry, they're two goals that ensured we got a point from both matches.

It wasn't long ago when everyone was crying for someone to score these goals

Good post Tris, Gillespie makes his mind up whether he is going to play well or not before the game. He looks at the LB and if he fancies he can beat him he does, if he thinks the guys got a bit of pace about him he wont even bother trying to beat him.

Dunny is a big problem. I have mentioned on previous posts about his attitude, and his similarities to Gazza are becoming more striking by the week. Not thru' his ball skills and his influence on a game, more his waist measurement.

I'm afraid I cannot agree on Cole though. He makes some splendid runs that just do not get seen by the "providers". I think the rest of the team have to learn his game as much as he has to look at himself. Goalscorers are what make a footy team successful, he is one and so lets try to play to his strengths. Remeber the Shearer days, we had a way of playing that was all set up around this man because he could score. Not that I am putting Cole in the light as Shearer but we need to look at ways of feeding him more often in the areas where he likes the ball.

I admit he is his own worst enemy with that solemn body language of his, but lets get realistic, we paid slightly more for him than we did for Grabbi and what the bloody hell has he done. The fans still chant the italians name yet he has not produced, isn't going to produce and his attitude seems to never get questioned. Get behind Cole and he will score the goals. Give him the same chances that Grabbi seems to get off the fans.

With Matty looking a long way off Yorke n' Cole is the present and future strikeforce that we have so lets not worry about their Manure connections support them because they are our best chance of success.

While it's right to be annoyed at the performance lets try and remember one thing. Last season we would have lost this type of game 3 - 0. This season we haven't.

It's the playing well and winning bit we have to sort out but in our last three league games we have stolen five points while being nowhere near our best.

As I didn't see the game I cannot comment on individual performances. From what I have seen I can agree with most of the comments about Dunn. Since we've bought Thompson we have a new midfield idol whose shown Dunny up by a mile. Thats why, I suspect Souness had him on the bench for the Celtic game and by reckoning he should drop him a bit more till he pulls his finger out. The annoying this is he can do it when he wants to.

As far as Cole is concerned give him a chance. His style on the pitch makes it easy for people to get on his back but he still scored, he was still in the right place to score when it mattered. His record last season was 13 goals in 20 games but if we remember he had a pretty slow start then as well.

Thought Cole along with Yorke and Friedal werev the only players to come out with some credit yesterday. Cole makes run after run but is not found, but no if he doesn't chase a long hit and hope into the corener people will get on his back.

Coles goal is exactly what he's needed abit of luck I now think he will go on from here and start scoring more regulary.

As for Dunny he needs to get is act together because at the moment he is going through the motions.

Critisizm for Dunny? Whatever next  :<img src=:'>

Let's hope we've got that very poor performance out of our system for this season. Thing is with Rovers we usually lose those kind of games.

How many travelling fans? we usually take a good following to Southampton for some strange reason?

Onwards and upwards.

See you Thurs Tris when hopefully you'll have calmed down  :p

Agree Tris.

Terrible performance from every single player. I just hope they are saving theirselves for Thursday. Why were the fans so quiet? These loosers are a disgrace to their club. 5 hour jouney and then to not sing or even look bothered about even being there is a disgrace.

Hope they are a bit more vocal on Thursday.....

So a question then?

Is it better to play well and lose (a la Boro/Celtic away) or play rubbish and get a point or three?

For me there's no doubt. But that could mean we get relegated.

Poor performances as well as results can become a habit. If a team continues to play poorly and win, eventually they will get found out.

I'd rather have the team playing well and losing the odd game because bad luck doesn't last a season in my opinion.

Let's not say everyone had a bad game because Brad was again outstanding and is second only to the Chelsea keeper in my opinion.

I thought yesterday Cole and Yorke made some good intelligent runs, problem as the midfield (except Tugay) didn't care.

Our main problem was that Soton wanted it more.  They were first to every ball and were challenging us and chasing the lost causes.  The ref was very poor, although the penalty decision could have gone either way it seemed.

One good point was the performance of Brad, Tiny and Short.  While Tiny and Short made some mistakes they tried to recover them unlike Neill (who had his worst game for a long while) and Curtis (who was even worse).

I've seen worse though... last year away to W.Ham and Fulham for example.

Hope you're feeling a tad calmer today Tris.  Yep the ref was bleedin awful (can we get the ref who we had at Celtic for the rest of the season please?) and most of the team were missing in action.  Notable exception - Brad.  Better than OK - Tugay and Yorke, then the way I saw things Cole started working and chasing once Tugay got sent off.  But give Soton a bit of credit - they were far from brilliant, but closed us down every time a Rovers player got the ball.  It was only Tugay who showed touches of skill to buy a bit of time.

Agree (mostly) about Dunny - if GS didn't know before, there's not much doubt now that he can't play the Flitcroft role.

Yep, Rovers were lucky to get a point, but how many times have we had a point or two snatched away in the last few mins?

We took afew fans but the amount that came from the north is debatable.

As for some of the sentiments on this thread, it drives me mad that some mindless people think that each Rovers fan who went yesterday is a disgrace.

I spent 20 hours yesterday supportin my team, standing at the train station at 05:30 in the pissing rain to get to ewood for the coach spending a shedload of money that I don't really have, now if that isn't commintment I don't know what  is. And I will be at Charlton in two weeks time when the game is on the tele, now I am not asking for a medal, but I resent people who call me and others a digrace

It was a typical away down south atmosphere, I have a theory that afew glory hunters (who live down south) from the tital winning days turn up just for the London games or Southampton and this is detremental towards the atmosphere, I am not for one minute criticising these people just commenting on a trend I have noticed for some time.

Just wait for SteB's comments on the fans yesturday. we were in the group top right and never stopped singing- mainly at the rovers fans such as ' you only singing when its celtic' and 'can you hear the rovers sing nnnnoooooo nnnnnnnooooooo' and at the end we were singing ' where were you when we were sh*t' as all the rovers fans sang after we scored. During the game one rovers fan had the cheak to tell us to 'shut up'

I'm keeping quiet on this one Jordan - like the fans did during the game.

It didn't help that the performance on the pitch was like Tris said, Rubbish.

We never went yesterday but have been to Southampton on a number of occasions previously and always found the support in good voice and numbers. Without doubt the terrible performance from the opening whistle hardly helped.

Can't agree about southern games being poor for atmosphere. The season we went down away to Charlton and QPR were 2 of the best games I can remember in recent times for singing both in the pubs and in the grounds.

For anyone who went to Parkhead it must have been astonishing to hear the contrasts from one game to the next. If the level support at Celtic was in evidence more often, you could put 50% on the away followings because it was a fantastic experience, and one more people would want to share.

As for being told to shut up Jordan, I can understand why someone would want you to shut up  :<img src=:'> No really their are far too many people in the 'shut up sit down brigade' following the club these days.

PRAWN SANDWICH ANYONE

What's obvious from the recent games is that Rovers aren't performing well while Celtic have raised their game considerable since we played them.

I think we are in for a big letdown on Thursday night because we cannot score goals for love nor money at the moment.

Don't agree about Celtic.

They had been winning their games comfortably before the first leg (apart from the old firm 3-3 draw).

After the game against us they tore apart a flu ridden Aberdeen side who were truly woeful, then struggled against Partick Thistle in the CIS cup (admittedly with an understrength side out) then didn't play particularly well today against Dundee United.

They still have the same problem of lack of competition in Scotland but my worry is they'll be more prepared for us this time.

Listened to a Celtic fan on Talksport earlier this evening on Rob Mcaffrey's show. He admitted they were surprised at how we went at them in the first leg, and how it brought home the quality in the Premier league as oposed to the SPL.

As much as I hope for a win to knock them out, I really believe that O'Neill will have learned a sharp lesson from the 'first half', and will be better prepared for Ewood.

Hartson etc have a lot to prove to their club and will be desperate to impress, and we have no forwards whatsoever.

Sorry lads, I think we are going to get thumped unless superthommo goes snapping at their wee ir.. sorry scottish ankles.

I had to go down to London on Saturday - Trains Fantastic - Good Old Chiltern Railways - Marylebone to London Bridge - on the Tube - No probs - Train from London Bridge to Brockley no probs.

Train to London Nightclub - Fine - Nightclub - Great - almost cheap alcohol - good music - good company - good hangover - Sunday coming home no problems again. I think Tria you ahd a shocker of a day.

I saw some one wearing an old style rovers shirt on Brockley on Sunday (about 2ish) anyone claim to be it?

Remember last season when we were pissing and moaning about our midfield and how it was Tugay and Dunn who were all are favorite midfield Duo - god we're fickle - Dunn does his job well - which is to be an attacking midfielder - who can track back, but he needs the support of someone to be a hard tackler so he caan get forward to serve the strikers. Tugay is a great passer of the ball but he cant tackle. Flitcroft is an aggressive ball winner - who keeps getting himself booked/suspended - so my shopping list for Christmas is a Left back - a ball winning midfielder - and the Lord of the Rings new DVD box set please.
