[Archived] Train Station At Ewood

Recommended Posts

Its not just that though, you would definetly need a section of double track, new points, signals, diversions etc

Thats why I suggested making it a temporary stop - you could probably get away without having all that if it was just used once a fortnight. It is only single track at Entwhistle which is used every day.

Having said that, the trains are usually too small or late anyway.

If you walk down shorrock lane and then turn right at the bottom onto Albert Street the walk to Ewood is entirely flat apart from the bit on Shorrock lane which is downhill on the way to the ground. Going up through Mill Hill to Livesey Branch Road is a much harder walk as you have to go up and down hill going too and from the ground. PS if Railtrack won't "upgrade" the line between Blackburn and Manchester Victoria to twin track (as it used to be) then i dont think there is a snowballs chance in hell of them putting a Station at Ewood. And ewood used to have a tram track to it. (behind the Blackburn End).. They were still there before the ground was redeveloped but trams hadn't run on them for a long time, as the last trams ran in Blackburn in 1949

, when they were replaced by buses

Aye and those buses used to shift crowds of up to 50,000+ on occasions and regularly over 30,000. A constant stream of double deckers nose to tail all the way from the Boulevade to Nuttall St right outside the ground in about 10 mins. There was often (well usually) standing room only, with people also standing on the platform, and sitting on the stairs. The poor conductor had absolutely no chance of collecting all the fares before journey's end. In fact I would say he was a good 'un if he managed to get half of them.

Mill Hill is a fine railway station whose ornate Victorian canopy juxtaposes with an airy, contemporary concourse which boasts a wifi enabled Starbucks and Pret a Manger.

Are you by any chance an estate agent Deryck?

<<AS - It's downhill >> Pedantic I know but Mill Hill station is slightly uphill from the magnificent, unsung but bijou Stakes Hall hostelry, if you go via under the Aqueduct and not Livesey Branch Road

That's what I mean. You walk down from the station to the pub, then it's level all the way to the ground.

These things are important ;)

So's a decent pub :)

The Stakes Hole was my old local and a proper toilet (and doesn't look like it's picked up any since I moved out)

I hadn't even thought of that until i read this post. The trains that run on the line in question here are very small - Would it be worth putting a new station in to only have the capacity to take a relatively small number of fans. i say bring back the procession of buses from the Town Centre but with a Police motorcycle escort like the away coaches get!

I think to truly influence the Man of Straw and Blackburn Council the composition of this petition would have to more accurately reflect the richly diverse communities that currently reside in this town than it would likely do at present ................

Maybe the new Chinese owners might have more luck ....

I think it's a will to do it that is needed, not luck.

I would love to see the payback figures on the new bridge in Blackburn!

Here is Jack Straw's web site and contact details

http://www.jackstrawmp.org.uk/contactus.asp

Key points are:

1. Regeneration of local area, allowing better links with town centre and allowing commuter journeys to Manchester

2. Environmental benefits - reduction of Rovers' carbon footprint

3. Allowing Rovers to better use the stadium all year round for the community.

Man the railway barricades.

Tony Wilson will be smoking a spliff in nodding appreciation.

Presumably thats Fife Rover in the photo ?

LOL!

Also, presumably, we's forming a one man demonstration against the conversion of the Blackburn End from the original, dry stone wall?

Keep this thread going all you like, the suggested railway stop at Ewood will never be built.

For all the reasons mentioned above.

even the ones about the environment and benefit for the local community?

How on earth was the new bridge justified?

Here is what the trams used to look like when lined up behind The Blakburn End

ACF25C.jpg

I cant help but look at that picture and think how has a town we've gone backwards over the past hundred years or so.

They the (contracted vandals) are pulling down a beautiful church that used to be St.Bartholmews at Ewood the detail thats in the building being torn down yet another piece of our social history gone.

Oh beggar off you old fool. With attitudes like yours nothing out of the ordinary would ever get done. Did you ever believe in the dark days of the 80s that Ewood would be the ground it is, with international footballers and gleaming silverware in the famous old boardroom? No.

Fact: there is an overwhelming economic case for an upgrade to the Manchester - Blackburn line.

Fact: if this line were ever upgraded Ewood would be on it

Fact: Jack Straw is lobbying for said upgrade to happen.

So it's not all over. It's just the beginning

Lucky we didn't order you the Lough Swilly oysters after all Paddy; then there'd really be no holding you back ;)
