[Archived] Train Station At Ewood

Recommended Posts

I can’t imagine a basic station, similar to the one down the line at Entwistle, which is basically a bus shelter on a raised platform, would cost a great deal to construct.

In addition to the station, or even without, it would be useful to utilise the land next to the Manxman pub for more car parking. This could be used on Match days, but if a train station was built, also for commuters to Manchester during the week.

If Manchester was London, Blackburn (as a town) would certainly be within the Underground Network. It would be amazing in terms of the regeneration possibilities if Blackburn was able to tap into the boom happening in Manchester, perhaps with a link into the proposed Big Bang Metro System.

Has anyone any info on what is happening with the land where the Church and School once stood next to the Darwen End? (Perhaps another point for the Fans Forum). The unobstructed approach to the ground does now look more impressive. At the very least, the car park should be extended and absorb the now somewhat redundant remains of Nutall Street from Velvet Street to Top o'th Croft

We have already asked about this block of land. The club have not been willing to comment as yet.

How on earth was the new bridge justified?

:rover:

Ferguson Street? Cos the old one wasn't fit for purpose (of carrying an upgraded road)? Maybe doesn't explain why something like Sydney Harbour Bridge has appeared, but at a guess it wasn't a great deal more expensive (in the grand scheme of things) and a bit more aesthetically pleasing than a basic bridge to do the job.

"Cos the old one wasn't fit for purpose"

You mean that because the Council didn't put the infrastructure in place before all the re-developement to place, to eleviate the traffic congestion they spend £12 million on a new bridge.

On that basis it should be a doddle to justify a station then!

How difficult would it be to site a new stop there anyway ? Take Mill Hill station - it's only a huge slab of concrete with a few lights and a sign. All the driver has to do is stop and then start the bloody thing ??

I know I said earlier in this thread about putting a platform at Ewood but after further thought it maybe not as easy due to the financial factor, the thing is that Network Rail won't enter into a project like that unless other people are picking up the tab, they would expect Blackburn council, Rovers and Nothern Trains who operate the service on that line to finance most of the work involved, and I would imagine that they would not find it financially viable.

You could buy a lot of concrete for a few weeks wages of even one Rovers reserve player. Anything which helps access to Ewood Park has got to be welcome. The track bed is already there, as is most of the signalling. It's just a case of surveying the best site. Just below the Manxman looks ideal. Blackburn already has five railway stations. After the main one, this would easily be the most used.

I notice that the first brand new suburban railway station to be built in south London since World War 2 is due to open later this month.

Merton Council and Railtrack say that the new station called 'Mitcham Eastfields' on the existing London Victoria to Epsom line will be "economically viable".

Sadly I can't see the powers that be deciding that a new station at Ewood would be "economically viable". I'd like to see a new station at Ewood, but it's highly unlikely to be built in the foreseeable future. The Government would much rather spend money on roads than investing in new railway stations.

The new station at 'Mitcham Eastfields' has apparently been talked about since the 1930s and it's only finally going ahead after pressure from people like the local Labour MP for Mitcham and Morden, Siobhan McDonagh.

So, where IS Jack Straw, when you need him? :rover:

The Man of Straw is far too busy shaking hands with murderous tyrants.....
