We'll sign this guy in January while Villa, Spurs, Boro and Wigan pay actual money for players you've heard of.

Ajax's youth system has provided many world class players, Ok since going to Turkey he has drifted off the radar. There is no harm in having a look, if he proves he is better than our current options, what are your problems, the teams you mention, from there spending on recent players, suggest we cannot compete. Remember a recent quote from the club, "we need to cut our cloth accordingly" me for one, if this means signing free agents, with proven quality. What's the problem, if he improves the squad. And before you start saying, it's just about making numbers up, We have 40 players named as current 1st team squad, two of which are on loan, a play as you pay contract, and 5 out on loan. I think last season's squad was 36, and was quoted as not strong enough, so 1 extra to pick from for Fulham. Quality on the open transfer market is expensive and competitive. So again what's wrong with looking. So where has this guy suddenly appeared from, agent, media link, I don't know, but maybe it's just something as simple as Rovers scouts doing what there payed to do. RSC ring a bell. :D

Evidence, or more consipracy-based pap? Given he's 'living the dream' and still riding the wave, young family & lives a stones throw from the club I can't imagine he's 'contemplating his future' any more, or less, than he did under Hughes.

With a new manager coming in Matty thought things might improve for him but have they, he is totally fed up with being played out wide and not getting enough games.

What happens next ? who knows ?

I know for me i'd sooner have Matty coming off the bench than a past it Blobbie Howler.

So, I'm guessing you've a one-to-one relationship with Derbs where he's revealed this to you? Might be an idea to ask him if he felt the same when Hughes did the same to him, or ask him if he really did think he was going to get Bellamys shirt number when the Welsh goblin left us.

I DO agree with you about preferring to see him coming on than Fowler; it's galling enough for fans so I can only imagine how he feels as a player knowing it's possibly going to impact on his chances. Then again, he can always knuckle down and prove to Ince his folly in recruiting Fowler - as Derbs did so well when he proved to Hughes not send him out on loan for another season once he'd come back from Wrexham.

None of us, probably not even the players, know Ince's mind; however the only thing Derbs can influence is doing as much as possible to prove himself rather than feeling sorry for himself.

Back to this Turkish fella, doesn't it just smack of agents pushing him into a trial and getting him to Rovers rather than us finding him? So he's a free kick specialist, interesting - but we'd have to win them first, which looks unlikely given our clumsiness in midfield.

See Kightley's still turning it in, game after game, at Wolves; for Ince to admit to being aware lots of clubs were after him and knowing 6 million would sign him adds to the puzzlement over the well-debated lack of recruitment at right wing. I can't help thinking Kightley would have been a far safer bet than either a past-it & uninterested Pennant or an overseas player that would probably still cost 5mill & heavy wages. Come January, if Kightley still performing to the level he seems to be, his cost may even be more - and the 'opportunity cost' of us NOT signing him this summer be even more expensive.

No, DB, it's called 'keeping your powder dry'.

The board reckon that if we do that we'll pick up bargains in January. You know, the same board who told us (after we signed no-one last January) that no clubs want to sell at that time of season so the players are either unavailable or the prices are too high.

To be fair, it's cyclical (as a function of where the TV deal is in terms of expiry, renewal, and value). Rovers have always been one step ahead of the game and have taken a view on when is the best time to splash the cash to get the best value from a limited war chest.

Which is why 4 players came in during January 2007 (Warnock, Dunn, Samba, Berner) - I can't remember the exact figures but Samba may have been 400K and I think Warnock 1.5 million. By the summer time, signing such players would have cost a lot more.

This summer was mad (not just the final day - the whole summer) - so I think the board have been sensible again to keep money back for January and not get dragged into the auction. It's likely that there will be more bargains available, and less money flying around in desperation.

The very richest clubs excepted (and we can't compete with them anyway), I think that January will be far less crazy in the transfer market.

does anyone know anything about this guy? could he be any good?

seams a bit strange his last club letting him go becuase of a formation change, would be like us letting roberts go for free just because we wanna play 4-5-1.

only thing i can think of is that his transfare value is less than his wages up to the transfare window?

Kinda reinforces the point - Neill would have gone for zip in the summer, but Warnock would have cost us considerably more than he did. The huge new TV deal was announced between the two windows, Rovers knew that, knew it would release a lot of new money into the transfer market, and acted accordingly.

On the two players under discussion, probably saved 2.5 million because of Rovers good judgement. That's the Blackburn end ticket revenue for a season, and some more.

Sticking purely to the original premise of course - that Rovers have learnt how to spend wisely at the right times rather than throw good money after bad rubbish at the wrong times.

The missed opportunity was Hughes' not Ince's. By the time Ince was installed as manager Kightley had signed a new long term contract and his value would have significantly increased.

I know Bents was still here then, but it was obvious to all he was off.

would hate to see us sign knightley, an unproven premiership quality player only for him to be another Dave Nugent. Mind you we did sign Andrews...

Fair point except Andrews only a relative small initial outlay so not too much of a gamble. Players like Nugent is expensive for

players with no premiership experience and too big a gamble for Rovers.
