[Archived] Winterburn's Defensive Duties

I think it was Sky's fault more than his. They just wouldn't get off the Arsenal subject, after their kids run rampant against Sheff Utd last night.

Ooooo, Nigel. Please tell us more about Carlos Vela. Ooooo, pleaaaaaase!

I saw him discussing the Pogatetz sending off and what he said was spot on. Going into a tackle with a straight leg and your studs showing is a straight red card offence. It was a nasty challenge and you could see the kids leg break...

It looks like Winterburn is actually doing something. It did seem that way at the weekend. Long may a positive impact from him continue!

Thought this at the weekend what does he do I had sirius live radio commentary on Saturday from I think it was west ham v newcastle and the commentator opened up by introducing his co-commentator Nigel Winterburn... surely if he has any important role at the club he should be at the game at very least.

He's had his first proper week in charge of our Defence and we kept a clean sheet. What more can you ask of the guy??

It seems to me that most people on here are just having a go at Ince and everyone he has bought in. By the way, how many clean sheets did we keep under Sparky last season?

I am not questioning Ince it just astounded me that a bloke who is at the club in coaching capacity isn't even at the game instead he's working with the media. It maybe a pre-exisitng contract arrangement which is fine if all parties agree but I was only questioning that in my view he should be at ewood not upton park. Naturally I wasn't at the game but I presume the rest of the Ince mafia were in the dugouts. If anything it is a dig at Winterburn not Ince.

He's not employed full time by rovers is he? I seem to remember reading that he was coming to put in a couple of days a week Presumably therefore when he can't be coaching the defence i.e. when they are actually playing, he's free to do other things. He probably has other pre-existing contracts and therefore will not always be at Ewood on match days. Probably if he'd had no other commitments he'd be there, but if he's got to work elsewhere those dates have been agreed in advance.

If that is the case gumboots , I think fans have the right to question why he is actually employed.

He will not get anything from watching Wets Spam and the Geordies and detracts from what he should be doing for the Rovers and watching the players he is supposedly employed to coach.

Aren't we playing the Geordies on Saturday? Couldn't he pick up on their defensive frailties that we can exploit?

Not if we are playing for a nil nil draw ^_^

And if he is only part - time - will he really know what are attacking strengths are (if any), especially considering he a supposed defensive coach.

He's employed because he was a very good defender who likes the art of defending and felt he could pass stuff on to other players. If the difference in our defence last week was down to him then I can't see the problem with his working part time for us. Presumably, if he got really into it then he might consider a full time post but I had the impression he's sort of put out the idea that he might be a useful resource and our club was the one that took him up on it. I can't find the story anywhere but it's just the way I remeber reading it and I could be talking absolute rubbish (little change there then)

There's enough coaching staff up there to be able to get on with things in Winterburn's absence / work as a team / communicate! In fact as a player it's probably quite refreshing to look forward to some specialised training on Mon / Tues with a different face and then get on with match preparation with the 1st team coaches and the rest of the squad on Wed / Thurs / Fri - if indeed that's how it pans out. I think Mimms is full time, but I doubt he spends 35 hours a week in the faces of Robbo and co.

I work from home 2-3 days per week, my boss is in Glasgow, the rest of my team in London and I might only see any of them for 1-2 days per month. Just as we use technology to make things work, I'm quite sure that Rovers are able to do likewise - and if Winterburn is in effect scouting the next opponents to boot because he has a pre-existing radio contract then so much the better.

I'm sure if it's decided he's needed at every single Rovers game they'll insist on changing that aspect, but I don't see that his role has been defined as having to join the rest of them on the bench. It's more of an expert consultancy role.

Why not appoint a defensive coach who lives a bit closer than London though - and CAN attend the actual games?

It's a serious question I've asked before, what's special about Winterburns abilities? Does he have his coaching badges, - I assume he has? Simply being part of a great back four wont in itself make him a good coach, - would it?

Agree Tris - but if there where problems you wouldn't be working from home as much.

This is something Rovers certainly have in defence

Also its a new job for him so you would think he is needed more which I think he most obviously is - I don't think yours is a new job and team is it?

Anyway I thought he was supposed to be doing coaching and not scouting?

I'm pretty sure that he doesn't have the badges and that this is his first job in coaching sice he retired 4/5 years ago.

He doesnt need any badges to be a defensive coach like a keeping coach doesnt either !

If you look at the old Arsenal back 4 all four of Adams, Bould, Winterburn and Dixon are all involved in tv pundetry and defensive coaching, whilst Spunky is also a goalie coach and golfer/fisherman.
