[Archived] Lucas Neill And Professional Contracts

Recommended Posts

Moving logically forward American.......... And if he had simply refused to officially talk to another club before his contract ran out cos he thought that as a free agent he could earn more?

Theno, He could have done that, but he didn't, as he wasn't put in that position until the January window when Liverpool were sniffing, and then came the Whammers with their ludicrous offer and Hughes saw that the situation wasn't going to change and we got 1.5 mil or whatever. Neill saw that the Whammers offer was too good to refuse, otherwise he would have stayed until the end of June and then buggered off.

Can't blame Neill, he wanted something else and went for it. He let the club know, did his job and then went. No complaints from me.

Fair point. Without that money we would not have got Warnock. So Sparky probably did give him a little push too.

I have no problem with a player running his contract down. Contracts (length) sometimes they work for us, sometimes they don't. The biggest problem I have with contracts is players not respecting them and engineering a move ala Roque. Player signs, club signs both are obligated for stated length and that should be the end of.

Lets be honest, Lucas Neill never came out during the saga to say anything. He kept his head down, gave it his all, although his performances did drop a bit during the end, and didnt add fire to the fuel himself, unlike many a player, these days.

Not strictly true that is it? I seem to remember on national TV he ran the length of the pitch to goad the small number of blackburn fans who booed him (wrongly in my opinion) for running his contract down.

Hardly keeping your head down.

It's quite astounding to me that anyone could possibly rate the positionally inept, error prone Neill as a better RB than the generally reliable Emerton.

Just goes to show it's a game of extremely diverse opinion.

I don't rate Neill higher than Emerton - Emerton isn't a specialist right-back though. I actually think Emerton's best position is in central midfield.

I do rate Neill higher than John Curtis though. ;)

I have left jobs for more money. I never felt disloyal.

I don't agree with the wages footballers get, but if I had the chance to earn their money, would I say no? No I wouldn't I would snatch their hands off. Thats what Lucas did.

I don't really see the difference between him and Brad leaving. Lucas was out of contract, Brad decided he could do better elsewhere. Surely he is the worse of the two and yet no one is on his back. He is still a rovers hero and probably always will be a great.

I am not sure if I would want Lucas back. Certainly don't think we should pay the wages he would want. I think there are better for less. However I have no animosity against him..........

I don't really think we should hold that against BF. The difference imo between the Brad / Lucas situation is that the manager wanted Neill to stay.

I see Lucash Neill Bosman (to give him his full name) is up to his old tricks - running down his contract. Apparently, he may leave West Ham this summer, on a free.

Good grief.

I thought West'aaam were his boyhood idols Bobby Moore Martin Peters Geoff Hurst - we won the World Cup singlehandedly for England etc etc.

Surely no-one would be stupid enough to give him another 70kp.w. contract (or more)

Would they?

Any move to bring that cash motivated egomaniac back to this club should spark a riot. I've never been so insulted than the period while he was made captain. He insulted this club over and over again and he shouldn't be treated with anything but contempt.

A Lee Bowyer Birmingham style campaign should be started if any move is made to bring him back here.
