Couldn't see any reference to this on the forum. Just seeing what other Rovers fans thoughts are on this. 134 years history on the verge of dissapearing.

As a Darwen lad I think its bad news, and as the comments on the link suggest, Darwen FC have suffered from the fact they are half a mile away from Ewood. The sad irony is the weeks wages of someone like Aaron Mokoena would probably save Darwen FC

As a Darwener I agree that it is very sad, what happened to all the new stadium plans and taking the club forward that the new owner claimed would happen.

Darwen are not a rival to our Rovers and never will be. It is an historic club and one that has been taken for granted by most of us imo. A large number of Rovers supporters are from Darwen so maybe we should have done more to help the club out when Rovers were not playing etc.

Like I said though, great shame.

They used to be! Battling forever in the early days. They were the equivalent of Burnley!

Yeah I read that, talking 1800's though so clearly not anymore.

I agree a charity event would be good, most of the people of Darwen get off their arses to watch Rovers Simon :P

Perhaps Jim can share some of his memories from those games.

There was rumour doing the rounds a couple of years ago that Rovers looked into using Darwens pitch for the reserves but the pitch wasnt big enough and the facilities werent upto scratch.

Pity a bit of investment from Darwen FC. then could have kept them out of this sorry mess.

Any idea who that might be then?

Yeh he's called Ted Ward. Full of empty promises. Had a few articles in the telegraph reckoning he would have had Darwen in the football league in 10 years, provided plans for a new stadium development (albiet the picture in the telegraph was copied from a stadium development in the USA) etc etc. As it turned out he was in financial troubles himself, and an injunction was obtained against him to get him out. Dont know the in and outs of it all though.

Agree, perhaps a charity match would be a great idea.

Yeah I agree with this. As another poster said, there are 1000s of people from darwen who attend ewood, would be a great gesture by rovers. There is a lot history between Rovers and Darwen - arguably the oldest derby in football, plus the infamous abandoned match between the 2 when the Darwen fans ran on with sticks (first ever recorded incident of football disorder), plus other stories if you have read the history books.

Sadly it wont happen though!

Arguably the people of darwen, like myself, could have helped more when you consider they get hardly anyone watching them at present... but the majority of Darwen folk support Rovers.

It's never nice to see a club fold but I was looking at the Darwen website and they get around 40 people watching them.

The councillors etc of Darwen are saying it's a shame etc but when was the last time they or the rest of the people of Darwen went to the Anchor to see a game? Can't have it both ways!

It's sad as Darwen have a history to rival anyone - first floodlights etc. The Ward chap and his lady friend came full of promises and unveiled a new stadium. This turned out to be nicked from a paper in the US. The fact one (or 2) people can bring history to a close by blagging it, is symptomatic of UK Corporate Law. They should have been held up for fraud and breach of promise but the police or SFS never get involved in anything too complicated - see the Royal Bank of Scotland.

Apparently, according to the LET a few months ago they still owe the previous (current) owner money for allsorts.

Amidst the platitudes, Darwen for me rivals Burnley in terms of its lowbrow lifestyle.

Socialised in a culture of small-time factory nepotism and hill-billy suspicion of 'out-of-towners', its inhabitants are forelock tuggingly deferential to their 'superiors' yet browbeatingly overbearing to their perceived subordinates.

Anyone who has had the misfortune to drive through the desolate wasteland that is Darwen has truly journeyed through The Valley of Ashes.

This murky bastion of industrialised banality personifies the failure of hope and all dreams. Ignorance is an end to itself. It's almost as if since the industrial revolution, evolution completely gave up on it.

Darwen's only worthwhile footnote in its long undistinguished history is to have an 'End' named after it. For that at least Darreners should be eternally grateful.

Hardly a member of 'For Darwen' then? Ewood Spark will doubtless be gunning for you now leftfooter. For what it's worth Darren does have nice areas and I would much rather live around Queens Park, Sunnyhurst Woods or even Bold Venture Park than anywhere near our Corporation Park and Queens Park thats for bloody certain sure.

BUT your attitude does remind me of the old rhyme.......... Twixt the hills all bleak and barren, lies dirty scruffy little Darren :)

Quite leftfooter. As a Blackburner myself I can only dream of how the towns folk of Darwen thank themselves every single day how lucky they are to live next door to a town (in Blackburn) that is truly at the heart of the North West. That's culturally, politically and of course economically. They really have been fortunate and no mistake.

I too thank myself that I don't have to drive 30 miles down the M6 every day for work as there is so much to offer in Blackburn. The shopping centre too really is an example to all - a truly marvelous spectacle that people must surely drive for miles around to visit (and laugh at). Also there is a new bridge. And a ring road. Tremendous stuff.

The fact that thousands of Darreners are Rovers fans shouldn’t be ignored by the way. Blackburn has a bloody great football club. Darwen soon won’t. Other than that I don’t see a great deal of difference between the two towns.

I used to watch Darwen occasionally many years ago – there wasn’t many on then either. A shame this is happening but such is the way of the world. One day everyone will support Man United and then they’ll be no need to worry.

I would say the majority of Darreners support Man U - check the place out when Utd are on the box - red shirts everywhere.

complete b******ks. Maybe in the couple of 'the less well off areas' but not in the majority of the town. Most of the pubs are staunch rovers pubs.

Didnt want to turn this into a blackburn v darwen debate, wasnt my intention, was just simply to raise awareness of the plight of darwen fc.

But then left footer chirped up.

I just want to echo the sentiments of bob fleming.

Leftfooter, you want to take a long look at the state of your own town before having a go at darwen and its people! Been on a night out in blackburn recently? truly embarrassing. Walked round the town centre recently? shocking, despite all money ploughed into it! Burnley town centre is better!

There is one good thing in blackburn....the footy team!

As it happens Im born in blackburn and proud of that fact, but the town is truly on its backside for various reasons and Im glad I live in darwen!
