Al
I think you mean "people on bikes" rather than cyclists. I can promise you the vast majority of cyclists will very likely be insured, are unlikely to break rules and there is no reason why we should be taxed for such a low impact activity. Your tongue has got to be firmly in your cheek there Paul. I'm afraid you cannot remove 'people on bikes' from the equation. They are all the same to motorists and after you have struggled past the same one at three successive sets of lights you start to the resent that this pain in the neck pays no licence fee. Guest andrewpickup
Is that for reasons of practicality or efficency (sic)? hahaha just pleasure. no if we just 'did' a couple when they decide the lights didnt apply to them im sure it would stop re amsterdam, its a hole of absurd proportions, the amount of bikes is the least of their worries, its not even the lycra backpack plonkers there, its just students tootling about
Paul
you use the road dont you? you should be taxed , and be subject to an MOT of sorts, as for insurance, im aware of no cyclist that has specific 'bike ' insurance the same way i have car insurance ( more for accidents as opposed to theft). A lot of cyclists, just go on the pavement say if the traffic lights dont suit them, pavements are unless laned for pedestrian also for fitness and leisure fair enough, but cycling to work with your neon polythene and lycra flapping about and stinking of sweat at work is just so people know you cycle. ill run you over next time I think we can appreciate you are somewhat intolerant of other road users, or at least those that get in your way. I'll try to keep this short. Cyclists are subject to exactly the same taxes as motorists with the exception of RFT. I'd suggest the difference in impact on the road surface between cycle and car is so great there is nothing to discuss. As a cyclist if I paid tax I would expect the road surface to be kept to a decent standard for cycling, at present many roads are not. As for MOT and insurance. My bike is serviced every six months by a professional and the same would apply to most serious cyclists. I carry third party insurance which covers me for an damage or injury I may cause. Do you insure yourself for third party in your leisure activities? I agree cyclists should observe the highway code at all times, as should motorists, and breaking the code, such as jumping red lights, pavement riding etc is completely wrong. Lycra doesn't flap and the neon polythene is to help other road users see us. As for smelling at work, horrible, quite agree. Your tongue has got to be firmly in your cheek there Paul. I'm afraid you cannot remove 'people on bikes' from the equation. They are all the same to motorists and after you have struggled past the same one at three successive sets of lights you start to the resent that this pain in the neck pays no licence fee. Yes of course I have my tongue in my cheek. There is a serious point here as well. I am a cyclist and can assure you the vast majority who consider themselves cyclists will observe the rules of the road for two reasons; safety as we are very exposed and secondly we know the motorist's view and many cyclists take the view it is neccessary to behave well to improve the motorist's view of cycling. For example when a driver is courteous to me I always acknowledge this. There is a distinction between people on bikes who have complete disregard for others and I would condemn their attitudes and those who look to cycle in a sane and safe manner. As for passing a cyclist? If the cyclist delayed your journey by perhaps 1 or 2 minutes is it really that big an issue? I ask that seriuosly. unluckymorton
the sooner Motorway driving is taught and then tested prior to driving the better. It's easy, keep as far left as you can at all times then motorways will be more free flowing and safer places to drive.
Paul
if every cyclist is like you id be surprised. A lot of people on bikes as you call them are a danger to themselves and others wobbling along busy roads where people drive like idiots Absolutely agree. I'd like to get the point across to all drivers that not all cyclists are irresponsible. I could point you towards a cycling forum of 9000+ members were these topics are discussed endlessly. There are many, many responsible cyclists but sadly drivers only see the idiots on bikes. For example if a driver is behind me and it's difficult for him to get by I'll do one of two things; signal him to pass as soon as I can see it's safe, which may be before he can see round a bend etc or if I'm treated with respect as a road user and I know he/she has waited for a safe moment I'll wave in acknowledgement. Drivers may not be aware but cyclists DO appreciate it when motorists give them a little extra room and respect. If drivers are honest about it a cyclist can only dely them for 30-40 seconds at the most. I won't try to defend the idiots but please give those of us who are behaving properly the credit, space on the road and respect we deserve. If the rider is dressed for riding he's probably serious about being safe.
den
People who have no idea how to signal at a roundabout [the vast majority it seems]. Really does my head in trying to guess if, and where, they're going. The ones who go right round with no signal whatsoever are the worst.

unluckymorton
, I am perfectly aware of the driving laws on the motorway thank you. Perhaps I didn't make myself clear. I am talking about the drivers who, when traffic is already travelling at the legal limit (and more), see a chance to nip up the inside when a gap appears in the middle lane and then move back into the fast lane, risking the possibliity of causing an accident by colliding with cars in the outside lane who might (legally) be trying to move inside. No doubt you are familiar with this illegal manouevre. No matter what speed you or anyone else is doing on the motorway you must keep as far left as possible. End of story. The best thing you can do if somebody is hurtling up behind you at excessive speed is to get out of the way and look after yourself. If everybody keeps as far left as possible then NOBODY can undertake! I think you should take back the first line, Dear Mr Company Car Driver and BMW driver I think that is very small minded. You'll probably find that company car drivers will be the better more experienced drivers on the road.

Uh-oh - cat among pigeons time! One of the most re-ocurring debates in BRFCS history When I was learning to drive I reckon about 80% of drivers who were either impatient, abusive or dangerous drove BMWs. I think more and more of them have graduated to Audis now.

I think the BMW thing is down to jealousy... now there is a spanner in the works for you... Who's going to bite first? SAS
£1300 3rd party? What on earth where you driving? Saying that, if I needed to insure a car of my own I'd probably pay through the nose now as I've been driving company cars for the last few years. A 1.1 Peugeot 106 It takes about 50 minutes to reach 60 mph, yet having six years experience on bikes, including a year on a superbike doesnt qualify me for road sense so it appears

Sure;y you would have a better understanding of the dangers of the road than most. I just hope you don't have a concentration lapse whilst driving the car and try to sneak through between lanes when the motorway is backed up...
