ABBEY Posted November 30, 2009 Posted November 30, 2009 but rvb ,we dont even focus on the league .according to this board we shouldnt be competing even with the likes of stoke.if competing you mean spankings of 3,4,5 and 6 . then the competeviness has gone.

yoda Posted November 30, 2009 Posted November 30, 2009 Your entitled to your views Abbey and i respect the strong stance you are taking on your viewpoint. The risks are far too great for me, i'd rather lose the cup game, come out unscathed in terms of injuries and focus on the league. I see that as the main priority when you consider we are as poor as a church mouse. If "we are as poor as a church mouse" then the cash from a good cup run is vital
RibbleValleyRover Posted November 30, 2009 Posted November 30, 2009 If "we are as poor as a church mouse" then the cash from a good cup run is vital As far as i am aware you don't make much from these competitions, certainly nowhere near the amount of money you would make from the league placings and the difference between each spot. Pretty sure the only cup competition that's a real cash generator is the champions league. I read an article a while back that said financially even the Uefa Cup (now the Europa League) doesn't generate much.
John Posted November 30, 2009 Posted November 30, 2009 Hardly a surprise maybe, but Man Utd, Arsenal and Spurs all going to play fringe players for their Carling Cup games. Think Macheda and Welbeck going to start up-front for Man Utd. Chelsea reserves still quality, but provides us with a little chance. I think the players, manager will be up for this one.
abbzy Posted November 30, 2009 Posted November 30, 2009 This is how much better they are than us...if Di Santo was at Chelsea he wouldn't even get a start in Wednesdays game, probabaly not even on the bench yet hes our 1st choice striker(i dont think he should be as he can't finish, he's scored one goal, an open net from 2 yards which was a gift and thats it)!! i think 0-2, but a similar 0-2 like that one at OT, a flattering one. And risking Dunny for this game would be a massive mistake, hes our most creative/biggest goal threat, and losing him could mean we end up in massive trouble. I still think we should give it a good go and hopefully players like Benni use it to prove there worth their shirt, its our only chance of winning something, those of you who say the FA cup are sooo deluded, people actually take that seriously and after seeing 3rd round draw i cant see us getting past that.
Claytons Left Boot Posted November 30, 2009 Posted November 30, 2009 Had some of you lot been running the country in 1939, we'd be speaking German now. It's a quarter final and we're going to be playing against a second string. A bit like against Arsenal when we won the sodding thing in 2002. Give it a go. There's no way we'll be relegated, so that Bambi-like whimpering won't wash either. Give it a go and play our strongest eleven in a 4-4-2!
Blue n White Rover Posted November 30, 2009 Posted November 30, 2009 What is it with people wanting Rovers to play our reserve team? Get the strongest possible team out there and go for a bloody win! It can do us no harm! People don't want to risk Dunny yet want to play other 1st team members. I don't know about most of you on here, but I for one would love another Semi-Final, after our cracking games VS United a few seasons back, and also when we won the Cup, it was an amazing feeling. It's what every football fan wants, yet we get idiots on here wanting to bend over for them. Get a grip!

We've absolutely nothing to lose on Wednesday so the players should be free to give it a go. Let's try out 4-4-2 against probably the best team in Europe right now and just see what happens. It's set to be a cold night and it'll be a lot warmer if we've something to cheer! (Well perhaps 'a lot' is a bit much but I might not mind as much).
bubblerrovers Posted November 30, 2009 Posted November 30, 2009 If we play our full team i predict 4 nil chelsea, If we play kalanic and other reserves im thinking 6, and i'm not joking, we will be destroyed. If we can hold out for ten minutes i'll be amazed.

Playing ollsen though i imagine would be a step too far, picking him for the under 12's would weaken even they're defence

I think some of the fans are worried we'll risk our first-team in another concession against the Top Four? When we could just blood the reserves for the same result.
tcj_jones Posted November 30, 2009 Posted November 30, 2009 In all likelihood, Rovers will never come top of the top division of English football again. Competitions like the Carling Cup are what excite the club's fans. My best Rovers-related memories are my mid-week cup trips to the likes of Charlton, where we went 2-0 down, before coming back to win 3-2 in an absolutely thrilling match. In all likelihood we will also lose on Wednesday. BUT, in cup competitions, you never know and there is just so much more at stake than in a run-of-the-mill Premier League game. I remember losing the first leg of the Carling Cup semi against United, but we damned well pushed them to the wire in the return. We lost, but I felt brilliant afterwards, because of the fact we pushed them so hard. We should play the strongest side we possibly can and consider it the biggest match of the season so far.
Blue n White Rover Posted December 1, 2009 Posted December 1, 2009 I think some of the fans are worried we'll risk our first-team in another concession against the Top Four? When we could just blood the reserves for the same result. But then again there's a risk in every cup game that this could happen? If that was the case then why bother entering the competition in the first place? Rather give your place up to a smaller team that would fight tooth and nail for a place in the Semi's or in the competition in some cases. We are never going to win the league and our only way of getting silverware is the League Cup and FA Cup. A win could also boost our performances in the league, as it would do our confidence a world of good. Look on the bright side.
Steve Moss Posted December 1, 2009 Posted December 1, 2009 I don't know why people say we can't win. We have a team of internationals. There are some good, maybe great, players on the Rovers squad. All they need is some confidence in themselves and their game and we can win anything. To paraphrase Sacchi, a great team is 99% hard work and 1% talent.

This man is talking sense.
Seedstral Posted December 1, 2009 Posted December 1, 2009 How many tickets have we sold so far as i've heard Chelsea have sold around 4000
LeftWinger Posted December 1, 2009 Posted December 1, 2009 Had some of you lot been running the country in 1939, we'd be speaking German now. If we'd have had Jason Roberts and Keith Andrews in the trenches in 1939 we'd be speaking German now. I've got images of Big Jase firing at and missing a German from 2 yards.
only2garners Posted December 1, 2009 Posted December 1, 2009 How many tickets have we sold so far as i've heard Chelsea have sold around 4000 Around 9,000 home tickets, or about half of our season ticket holders. I'll be boosting that by 5 later today. Chelsea have heavily subsidised transport to the game, which on top of the £10 tickets, about equal to a pie at Stamford Bridge, means they have sold a lot if not all of their allocation.

I've got images of Big Jase firing at and missing a German from 2 yards. ... but only if he's given time to think about it. Keith would put his gun down and point out targets for everyone else.

I've got images of Big Jase firing at and missing a German from 2 yards. You're probably right about Roberts. But....neither of the two you mentioned would have been deserters. At least they would have had a go. Half on here would have been up before the firing squad.

Is that it? 13,000 for a quarter final is pathetic!!
vyeo Posted December 1, 2009 Posted December 1, 2009 I'm very sad to say this, but I'm feeling strangely mellow about this game and I think this is what has gone wrong with our club. Under sparky, I would have been up for this one and would be genuinely optimistic that we have a fair chance and would have a good go at Chelsea. But right now, I have no such feelings. No hope, but no dread either; just a resignation that we would roll over and die. It just feels like the club is suffering from a cancer and is dying slowly.

jonv Posted December 1, 2009 Posted December 1, 2009 I'd expect at least 15k to out sing Chelski. I can't see 4k of them coming down.
