It's simple. Players will be unable to play at peak levels if they have to play numerous games in a short space of time and the risk of injury increases. It mainly comes down to risk, players are being paid ridiculous amounts of money, so if they do get injured and are unable to play for weeks or even months, that's a lot of money lost. If the management staff deems it a safer option to rest the player for one game then they would rather do that instead.

It's not to do with tiredness levels. Players don't sit there and go "I'm too tired to play", their legs will give way on their own if they are forced to do more than they can handle.

The human body wasn't designed to be put through what elite footballers put it through, simple as that. If they played one game a week, then there wouldn't be half as many problems with injuries in the game. As it is, however, players are forced to play as much three games every ten days and the risk of injury is greatly increased.

Of course, the biggest single reason for the number of injuries in the game, however, is the fact that players are not given sufficient time to recover from an injury before being thrown back into the team.

It's also important to remember that, more often than not, when a player is 'rested' they are by no means inactive.
