[Archived] Debate of the Week: Would English football be stronger and/or better if the top few teams left the PL for a European Super League?

Just how would it be healthier.. every PL club going would have to suddenly cut back.. do you think sky would renew the TV rights package at the level it is with a second level league?[/b]

The championship would also loose out as it would become a third level league and again cash etc would drop.

You make many good points veevs but why would those two things make any difference? Look at our squad. All the best players leave as soon as they are able to go to the CL clubs anyway so any difference would be that the ones who the top clubs would not want e.g. the likes of Nelsen, Roberts Emerton etc etc would earn 10k pw instead of 25k pw. Now unless they got a better offer abroad do you think any would pack up playing in protest?

The fact is that hope and expectation of many many football supporters have been dashed by the Prem league. I realise that we'll never go back to 63 and a max wage cap and that it will suit the better supported clubs but the way it stands now the only way to success is via a very wealthy individual willing to burn hundreds of millions of pounds. The constant calls on here for this club's current and previous owners to chuck good money after bad on the pursuit of a pipe dream is so pathetic it's untrue. 'We need investment' is the most misleading of statements that I can think of. Much closer is 'We need a mega rich idiot with a death wish'... not only interchangeable but far more accurate.

The big clubs buggering off might just be the kick start needed for professional club football in this country to re-invent itself to a position of common sense and financial well being. Ultimately there needs to be half as many clubs and half as many full time pro's playing the game.
