[Archived] Brett Emerton to retire.

Recommended Posts

He was with the Rovers for a while, did some good things, put in some ordinary shifts.

Got to admit that when Souey signed him, I thought we'd got a beauty. He'd been playing well with Feyenoord and I can recall one occasion where he sat Sylvestre on backside with a dribbling run.

I thought that Souey would mold him into a great midfielder, maybe attacking right back, I kept waiting and waiting. It just never happened.

I can't help but think, that there was a wasted opportunity.

Anyway, thanks Bert.

I think we all thought he was going to be something special on the wing, especially with the price tag. It never turned out to be though. I think Hughes found his best position at full-back, where he looked solid.

I also seem to remember a game against a similar Premiership team at the time, where he dribbled it from a goal threatening position, right back to our 6 yard box. Might even been against Man City!

Good luck to him though!

Good attacking full back but not enough pace or tricks to be a top class winger. Emerton - Jones - Samba (or Nelsen) - Olsson was a good PL defensive unit and his decision to leave was another reason we were relegated. Until Henley matures as a player he's never been properly replaced.

He looked like the best player in the world on hs debut. I thought we were going to destroy teams with duff almost unplayable on the opposite side. But alas he never reached them lofty goals. Like alot of 'utility' players he never really had a settled position and as a result it probably affected his game over the years. Still a good solid pro for us

Didn't Duff leave the summer Emerton signed? I remember thinking we might not miss him after all following Emerton's stunning debut. Sadly he never reached those heights again but became a useful player in his own right. Remember him doing well in CM under Hughes for a spell.

Amo, can you change the order of teams round in your name please?

Rovers / some Spanish team...;)

Did well for us, did Bert. His value to the team was underestimated IMO. Good pro, never kicked up a fuss, just got on with doing his best for the team. Great engine with the invaluable ability to get hold of the ball deep in his own half and take it to the other end of the park.

Good luck to him.

Since I tend to browse the forum at work, those avatars make me have to shift the browser window over to the left, so they (and everyone's names) get cut off the screen.

Did we not have 1 season with them together?

edit - just checked and your right. D'oh my memory is bad :(

Terrific servant was Brett, not many players stay at a club as long as he did, let alone players from abroad.

As others have said, didn't live up to his potential, but his contribution was recognised by everyone in his last few years, something which maybe wasn't the case for a few of our other less appreciated players over the years.

Never hit those one game heights again but was a good player and a great servant of the club. Was actually one of my favorite players at the time due to his energy and hard working ability, when he played there was no question he gave 100%. That partnership down the right side with Bentley was very good (perhaps a tad underrated even?) and Bert was a key part of that pretty good Sparky side that pushed for the European places.

Enjoy your retirement Brett.

As others have said, a good, solid, reliable professional. Had his best games at right back (debut aside) but I believe he played wing-back for Feyenoord so that perhaps shouldn't come as a surprise. I'm not sure he was ever considered an out-and-out winger.

Part of a crop of players who I was, by and large, proud to support.

Sure I remember an old interview with Souness or someone who said that Emerton was largely interested in joining us on the strength Duff was still a Rovers player or something of the sort but alas we ended up selling Duff anyway.

If someone could confirm this that would be great just so I know I'm not going mad!

I completely agree very underrated professional.

The qualities he possess's is an example to all our young players being able to play RB,LW,CM,RW even in the hole behind the striker and played consistently well in all those positions.

He had a fantastic engine got up and down the pitch very well and never complained about playing in various positions & was a very useful utility player.

Some of the wasters in our squad could learn a thing or 2 from him model pro and scored some important goals at times to keep us in the prem lge and to get us into Europe.

Players like Lucash Neill could learn a thing or 2 from him.

I wish him all the luck in the future I hope he stays in football in a coaching capacity as it would be a waste for football to lose such a talented individual.

I would love him to one day become a coach at rovers. Terrific pro very underrated.
