only2garners 1794
There’s an article on the BBC website with a number of people complaining about getting letters asking them to go quite a distance to the mass vaccination centres. Whilst apparently anyone can ignore the letter and wait for an appointment at a local GP centre the letters don’t make this clear, so lots of elderly people are worried that they have to travel a distance, often into busy urban areas and many without their own transport to get there. It also begs the question that if anyone can ignore their invite how are the new centres going to get the numbers to get rid of their vaccines?

Not only is there zero social distancing but half of the f*ckwits aren’t even wearing masks. I keep banging on about this but you can’t tell a significant percentage of Britons what to do. They simply don’t care and won’t comply, pandemic or no pandemic. Put simply, huge numbers of the rank and file here are just thick. They must get it from the current government. Nothing more. It’s 2021. For many people, myself included, the actions of the monarchy hold very little, if any relevance. You clearly feel otherwise which is fair enough. Dreams of 1995 4807
I personally feel like we should eradicate the royal family and use the money from tourists at Buckingham Palace to house the homeless or something. No way in the 21st century should we still have that amount of privilege when some people are dying in the streets. It isn’t even the “main” royal family that annoy me the most but it is distant cousins that grate me.
gumboots 4696
Its not the impact she has on you or me that matters here. Its that there are still an enormous number of people in this country and indeed throughout the world who feel a great allegiance to the monarchy. The Queen saying she's had the vaccine will persuade many who might have otherwise said no to have it. Anachronism or not, she herself is highly respected and where she leads others will follow. She’s done the right thing and if it convinces one more person to take the vaccine, it’s worthwhile. Suggesting that she’s done anything more than what’s expected of her is where I disagree. Don’t want to drag this off topic so I won’t comment further.

Dreams of 1995 4807
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2021/jan/11/england-warned-prepare-worst-weeks-covid-pandemic-chris-whitty I can see the new 'rules on socialising' are already being muttered, which history tells us is a toe-in-the-water check for further restrictions. Nadhim Zawahi has urged people "not to sit down" when going to exercise or "have that opportunity for social interaction because that is what is helping this virus". Meanwhile, millions upon millions of people ventured into their offices or working environments today. I sincerely hope none of them sat, or socialised, as that might 'help the virus'. He is worried about "Supermarkets" and the "one-way system"; he is "worried about the pictures of social interaction in parks" but of course he has no mention of the workplace environments that are not built for social isolation but for inclusion. The mere fact people might spend up to 8 hours a day in these offices with heating or some form of air conditioning on is irrelevant because, as we know, this virus only spreads when we socialise. Schools are still 30%+ full. Of course, as long as they don't sit and talk to each other in the playground, these schools are "absolutely safe" and pose "no risk whatsoever" to teachers, children and families. They are taking us for mugs.
RoverDom 2046
I really struggle with the no stting outside rule. People need to get outside and have some fresh air but not everyone is fit and able to go for a run and walk long distances. If you're not coming into contact with people what odds does it make what you're doing when you're outside? Tinker all you like with what little socialisation / outdoor time we're currently allowed, it wont make a blind bit of difference when half the country is a key worker and allowed to carry on as they please. If we're being really anal about it all, exercising is probably worse than sitting down. Going for a run you breathe harder and faster so your spreading whatever is in your gob further. Also 10 people running round a park is a much bigger risk of going within 2m of someone than 10 people sat on 10 separate benches. No doubt there will be some lockdown fetishists somewhere though, eyes rolled back saying "spank me and limit my exercise to half an hour"
Gav 9320
The current numbers are worse than back in March with a variant that is far more infectious than the original strain. Thankfully more people are surviving due to a better understanding of the virus, thats a major positive. Why are we not in stricter lockdown measures if the numbers are worse and the NHS can't cope? Where are the Nightingales!
joey_big_nose 3151
I can't really see people sitting down outside makes much of a difference. Its how much proximity you have to others which is to be managed. In London we are in a bit of a weird situation now. Infections have peaked and we are on the way down quite quickly. But as hospitalisations lag infections by 1-2 weeks and deaths lag infections by 3-4 weeks both those stats will be rising and understandably panic will continue to rise. Pressure on the NHS is unbelievable. But it creates a bit of an odd scenario where there is pressure for further restrictions now but it does not really impact hospitalisations or deaths due to the lag. It's a tough one to appreciete due to the confusing impacts of the time lag. But I don't think government need to add any further restrictions in London as it stands. North West on other hand is on its way up still so there is a good argument for stronger restrictions there. Edited January 11 by joey_big_nose

I come out of my self isolation on Wednesday, as a result of being in contact with somebody with Covid-19 once again. My diary for the remainder of the week: Wednesday - Meeting AM on site, in a portacabin. Meeting PM on a different site, outdoors for a walk around with engineers and architects. Thursday - Meeting AM and PM. Friday - Walk around site for pre-start AM, PM I will actually be allowed to work alone. Have no issues with any of it but it is in direct contradiction to what I am allowed to do in my free time. Directors and H&S of the companies who organised these meetings all insist it is within the guidance - again fine by me - so long as we wear masks and practice "social distancing when able" (cop out). I will try and make sure nobody sits down in these meetings but I can't promise anything................................................

And I'm hoping you keep the meetings purely about work matters? Cos the second you start asking each other what you got up to at the weekend, that's socialising and means the virus can pass freely between you.

Not sitting on a park bench isnt going to make a shite of difference if they're not putting a stop to this sort of thing. It just means those that are following the spirit of the guidance are told they can do less whilst these people will carry on as is.

Dreams of 1995 4807
Meanwhile Derbyshire Police fined two women for walking in a park, for which they drove to and said technically the coffee cups they were holding could be classed as a picnic. The phrase "easy target" springs to mind.Matt Hancock came out and 'backed the police absolutely' and warned that those 'breaking the rules' were risking the entire countries health and placed the importance of compliance in order to protect the NHS. This is the same Hancock that flouted the rules in the Westminster bar? Never trust a man who is scared to head a ball - he's a coward. I wish we could have a theme picture for each thread because this picture should go down in history.
RoverDom 2046
It may or may not be the same one but I saw a couple had been fined for going for a walk somewhere, they had driven 7 miles to get there so police said they hadn't stayed local. Bit of common sense needed, my house is right on a popular dog walking route yet I'm a 5 min drive from the middle of nowhere (if you avoid all the tourist hotspots where all the southerners are now cowering in their second homes) its surely more responsible for me to drive to 5 miles away? Photos taken from the BBC website minute-by-minute. The person on there was going on about excited fans and the magic of the cup. No mention whatsoever about breaking the law. Each photo had a police officer stood about, not doing anything to break it up. This is why people are disillusioned...

I will be going to work tonight. I work in distribution industry and we all have to wear face coverings/masks on site unless we eating or drinking on site. We cant work from home sadly and are very busy. We do deliver some food items so have to open. Asda, Morrisons and Tesco dont have one way systems in place. No staff on door. No proper social distancing in place at all. People arent keeping distance. So how Supermarkets going to enforce these rules really? Do you not agree that Schools need to be open for staff of NHS or social care or supermarkets sectors? 1 hour ago, Gav said: The current numbers are worse than back in March with a variant that is far more infectious than the original strain. Where are the Nightingales! Some nightingale are being used Gav but will the NHS doing the vaccinations and treating people who are serious ill with the virus plus non Covid 19 treatment. So the staff isnt there yet. Stricter lockdown? We are in arent we? No pubs, bars or restaurants open, no socialising outside or inside. With respect to schools, yes I do. However that isn't the case. I know more people who are classed as key workers than aren't. A big example is a good friend of mine is the local window cleaner and his Mrs is a saleswoman for Lee Brothers (they sell PPE/work gear). Both are classed as "unable to work from home", have key worker status in case they are stopped out and about and therefore their two children are still attending school. In reality neither are required to keep the country functioning and alive. The lockdown is only strict on social life. It may work, the numbers are decreasing, however this is for a whole 7 weeks whereas surely it would have been much to lockdown sharp and hard for less time which would then allow a better tracing system. The idea that numbers are 'overwhelming' to them is crazy to me when there are bigger populations than us in other continents seemingly doing a better job! Every single lockdown since March - the most effective - has been solely about attempting to keep business happy whilst they take practically everything else they can of us. It doesn't help when you keep seeing incredibly rich people jetting off to Dubai or the Carribbean without a care in the world whilst us folk have been left to have a year of our life taken from us and keep being told of the dangers of socialising but that our workplaces are "covid secure" and "risk free". It simply isn't true. They are simply keeping their paymasters happy whilst whipping us up into a hysteria and offering us gimmicks of lockdowns to placate the angst they cause.
