Rovers winger Ally "Noddy" MacLeod retrieves the ball from the River Darwen which ran behind the old Rovers training ground (made of cinders) next to Ewood Park.

There was a rule that whoever kicked the ball into the River Darwen, had to retrieve it. As you can see it had been snowing, so the water must have been freezing.

Not sure of the date, but likely to be sometime in the late 1950. 

MacLeod went on to become Scotland manager in the late 1970s.

Just uncovered these 2 momentos amongst my hoard of 'stuff' and put them in my office, in pride of place, where they really should have been all along:

1987 signed ball

1995 signed ball.

"Roll along Blackburn Rovers, Roll along, get the ball in the net where it belongs... de de dah", as my Grandad used to sing to me as I sat on his knee!

Funny thing is though, we've spent a lot of time in North Carolina over the years and 'shag' is actually a Carolinian dance:

First time I encountered it was in 1980 as a Freshman at my first shin dig: A rather attractive, tall, blond, Southern belle sauntered up to me and asked "Would you like to shag?" I was gobsmacked and thought bloody hell, she's a bit forward and said, "sorry love no thanks, I'm just going out for a fag" Then all my mates thought I was batting for the other side!....Funny thing the English language!

Rovers forward John Byrom walking down the street where he lived at the time, John Bright Street in Blackburn, also the street of where Fred Pickering once lived.

Picture date December 1964.

He was a class act Jim, Bobby Moore rated him as one of the players who always gave him a hard time. He specialised in scoring hat tricks against West Ham. It was real mistake selling him to Bolton when we did. For modern fans reading this he was in the style of Matt Jansen.

He was playing and scoring for Rovers in the old First Division when he was 17.

I can't do links but if you look up " Mr Bus Driver " by Bruce Channel on youtube there's a video by MrShaggerDJ. The video has a cartoon image of couples doing " The Shag " towards the end of the video. It's out of my league dancing wise.

John Byrom is a legend to Bolton supporters, too. One of their greats.

I was eight years old when I started going to Ewood in 1966. We had just sold Byrom to Bolton but, at that age, I was unaware of that. My uncle used to take me, as my dad had no real interest in football.

A few years later, I started going on my own and gradually got to the age when I followed the lads away. When we played Bolton, especially away, I used to dread Byrom being in their line up. I knew he was a prolific striker but still blissfully unaware of his previous status at Rovers. As you say, a real mistake selling him. We may well have gone straight back up with him in the side. We’ll never know.

Johnny B had the knack of saving his energy for the important moments in the box instead of charging around like a headless chicken, giving the impression they are putting a shift in without achieving much.

I think this may have been a rearranged game after the original was called off a couple of hours before kick off because of a waterlogged pitch. They turned the League Liner Rovers fans train back half way to Bristol.

Well we had Martin Britt, who had been a top prospect, who we'd signed the previous season but he came with a serious knee injury which finished his career before Xmas of that year. We signed Alan Gilliver, who came with a big reputation, but unbeknown to Rovers he had disc problems. To sign Gilliver we sold Byrom. Neither of Britt or Gilliver hit the heights, all the while Byrom was banging them in for Bolton. He was past his best when he came back to Rovers.
