Playing Holtby, Travis and Johnson in midfield means we've too many bodies playing too deep in central midfield. Possibly that's ok for away games like today but it won't do at Ewood against teams that park the bus. We could do with a mobile ball winner like Chowdrey to cover every blade of grass.

Agreed.  Thought he was good.  Reminded me of Nzonzi.

Reckon that's the role Travis is expected to fill.

He's been somewhat quiet in preseason, though might just be him as a character that comes alive in the competitive games.

Could not the very same Damien Johnson, who is currently helping, be the perfect candidate to replace Mowbary given his in depth knowledge of those same players.  Players who he has already guided to some levels of success as a team.

Now? No, he doesn't have enough experience. In 12 or 24 months time? Maybe.

As I've said previously, knowledgeable people outside of Ewood respect what is going on at Rovers and consider TM to be building something creditable, albeit we all know there's work to do. It's far from all doom & gloom as is often inferred on these boards.

Those are the usual niceties which managers extend to one another.

What makes some ex-pro who gives Rovers a cursory mention more "knowledgeable" about the club than the fans who eat, sleep and breathe everything Rovers?

Like Stu said, plenty of managers/ex-players were telling us to give Kean a chance.

Good game, only preseason but encouraging all the same.

I was a bit puzzled Wharton was out and Magloire was in but thinking about it Magloire is a right sided CB and maybe Mowbray sees him, for now, as Lenihan's backup.  Williams in to add some experience perhaps.

Williams played quite well for the most part but he did make a few mistakes including a couple of terrible passes which could have led to Leicester goals if they'd been more on it.

Personally I do think he's a much better CB than left back.  He had a good period of games partnering Lenihan pre Preston away I think but looked poorer with Adarabiyo and I think TM lost a little faith in him.  Not sure what's going on with DW and TM still wouldn't be surprised to see him leave if we get one or two in but he can play well though I don't think he's quite the quality we need and I think he rates himself higher than backup.

Interesting to see Bennett not appear much in preseason and today come on in midfield, hopefully means Nyambe will be signing a new contract soon as I rate him highly as quite a few here do.

To match Vardy's pace? Magloire's the quickest player in the club apparently.

Not exactly Breretons fault that tho is it?That he didn't cut his teeth in the lower leagues?

Warburton who at one time many on here wanted as our manager saw fit to start him most weeks at forest when he was manager there.

My point is without a proper run in the side he will never do anything here and we be lucky to get 500k for him if he was to leave. He has done ok in pre season and ok after the covid break, think he deserves a chance to show if he can do anything for us

So you would play him from a financial perspective, even if it affected team results and performances?

Why does Brereton deserve a run of game but someone like JRC or Buckley doesn't? It probably a better financial gamble that one of them comes good and we get a decent fee for them than getting a decent fee for Brereton.

Tony will soon knock all that nonsense and enthusiasm out of him and teach him how to 'hold his position like Evans and Smallwood.

Considering we're operating a very high press as a team now, I don't think this is an accurate comment in any way.

Absolutely correct. If Brereton is selected and he plays well then he keeps his place. If not he is dropped. I wouldn't be comfortable weakening the team to simply build up a 'project signings' confidence. That simply is unfair on other players and the fans.

Brereton has played well overall in pre season.Like I said in a previous post plenty within the game rate Brereton added to the fact Warburton gave him plenty of starts at Forest leads me to not agree with some assumptions on here that he is talentless and has no decent attributes.Plus I saw quite a bit of him at Forest, live and on the telly and he looked exciting.

I would give Rankin-Costello a start as one of the front 3 also and I rate Buckley.

That doesn't answer the question I asked.

Regardless of how well regarded he was as a 17 year old, if he isn't performing on the pitch now then he shouldn't be playing.

If only some of our other players could learn from Dolan when it comes to drive. Never seen a player since Harrison Reed with so much sheer determination to go and win the ball back.

If we’re going to operate a high press, the players have to believe in it and execute it to the upmost of their ability.

It Just takes one player like Dolan to close the ball down so well and quickly for that start to rub off on other players it is infectious. The likes of Brereton and Arma should start to expect it from Dolan and be on the front foot and to get more opportunities.

He has been performing in pre season for me tho, nothing extraordinary but he has done ok and is worthy of a start next weekend.

And finance has to come into it unfortunately we are not in a position where we can just write 7 million off without giving the player a proper chance. He hasn't had a proper chance here

Ok, so why does Mowbray get so many pelters on here from many for his complimentary comments about our opponents, if it's just to be accepted as football politics when others do it?  Double standards don't you think?

I just feel Mowbray gets unfairly critiqued on every aspect of his management style by folk who just can't wait to get a dig in.  There's room for improvement of course, and I'm not opposed to fair criticism. But there's a context & a bigger picture that gets ignored.

I am neutral to Tony I think he did well to get us promoted and then to stabilise us as a decent mid-table side.

In league one for the 1st few games he tried to play free flowing football but it didnt work and we struggled at the start. He changed to a more direct style and got promoted.

He does frustrate me with his safety 1st approach and go with what he knows like persisting with strikers as wingers and often starting Bennett or bringing him on when there are much better options.

Give youth a chance like he did start to do last season and now in pre-season and dont throw Bennett on when they are better options.

Nyambe and JRC should be starting every game if fit. Buckley needs to play more. Dolan must make the bench for games and be given game time, give me a few starts and see how he gets on.

Only play Gallagher if you are going to play him as a striker or bring him on for the last 30 mins if you want to change things around. If nothing else he works hard and closes down players well and is a goal threat.

I know it looks unlikely but if we could get Tosin and Cunningham back on loan or similar standard and if Dack comes back to his best and with Arma firing and JRC, Nyambe and Buckley all continue there progression and Dolan continues his amazing start I see no reason why we cant make the playoffs.

Without signing a good centre back and left back we will be mid-table again.

If he had made a few sub appearances and an odd start and then been bombed out I would agree with @islander200.

However, he hasn't had a "proper chance" (presuming that means a run of games) because in the 40 odd appearances for the first team he has made he hasn't looked very good.

He will get more chances now as we have allowed 2 strikers to leave and brought none in.

Financially, we couldn't afford to blow £7 million on a dud. That mistake has already been made. Jeopardising results by not accepting this would be a second mistake.

He hasn't been good but he has been mismanaged aswell. The manager bought him with no clue how to use him.

The squad as it is isn't good enough to go up or make play offs in my opinion nor is it bad enough to go down.

I think Brereton has potential but if we are ever going to see it he will need a run of games, Armstrong had many poor games for us but was always picked the match after.

I would rather Brereton,Buckley, Davenport, JRC etc be given chances this season rather than sign a bunch of journey men.

If top 6 is to be a realistic target then Quality needs to be signed but some of the names mentioned as potential targets are nothing more than bog standard middle of the road championship players I'd rather go with the kids including Brereton

How youthful are you, and can you play left back?

45 and can play on either wing RB, RW, LB,LW.

Probably still quicker than Bell (ran 100m in 11.3 seconds earlier this year) so have accleration and pace. My fitness is great play tennis 12 hours a week and go gym 4 days a week. I am a great dribbler and great passer of the ball and specialise in a through ball.

Weaknesses not great at tackling, heading or crossing with my left foot.

So I basically Bell at defending, Rothwell when attacking and have the versatility of JRC ?
