Ward-Prowse is a new name. He's not been mentioned on here before now. He is a solid yet unspectacular player. However he is exceptional in dead ball situations which is something that Southgate is very fond of. Him whipping in free kicks and corners would cause no end of havoc.

Grealish wins the free kick.  Jwp puts it in. I honestly think he's the best dead ball specialist in Europe

No Pickford, TAA, Tarkowski, Keane, Justin (injured?) Sancho, Grealish (injured?), Maddison (injured?), Oxlade-Chamberlain.

Pickford, Justin, Grealish and Maddison are all injured.

Surprise Keane not given they are 6 centre backs in the squad

Possibly, but for the other 89 minutes when we don't have a free kick I'd prefer to have someone else in my midfield.

It's a pity you cant have replacements like ice hockey, get a free kick,on comes JWP then off he goes again when he's taken it.

Southgate is like the international version of Mowbray.  He has a selection of world class talent but has eff all clue how to use them.  I mean come on how does lingard start v san marino.  (According to the paper). Hes going to ruin the best crop of young talent we've had in decades

To be fair Lingard is playing really well for West Ham. I for one am happy we have a manager picking on form rather than who they play for.

Me too but hes 28/29. This is the perfect opportunity for someone like foden to cement his place in the England lineup

I can see both sides of this.

He can play what he thinks will be his Euro's 11 to get them used to playing with each other. Or he can use it to see what he has available.

England consistently get cake walk qualifying groups. Starting against San Marino is akin to a friendly. It gives Southgate the opportunity to see what he has.

I do agree that he needs to set out his system and work it out quickly. For the first time in a long time England have options all over the park. He needs to suss out what he wants.

I dont really agree with Lingard being called up, he would be well down the list although his recent form is impressive. It is not half as controversial as Dier's inclusion or Alexander Arnold's exclusion though.

But tonight, firstly the whole international break is a farce with the pandemic and makes no sense. And games against San Marino without such minnows having to pre qualify is beyond going through the motions, it isnt competitive. But anyway, there are 3 games in this break so I would expect a second string side tonight rather than playing the same 11 for 3 games in a row.

Here here.

You can see Foden being the next Glen Hoddle under Southgate. One of the best players we've ever produced but frequently left out of the team on principle for some weird and unknown reason known only to the manager.

It's not who he picks against San Marino that bothers me its who he picks against the better teams when he goes defensive to try and stop them.

He should be thinking we have some of the best young attacking players in Europe i'm going to play them and let the opposition worry about us instead of the usual oh my they have some good players let me pack our team with defensive players to try and stop them scoring.

Southgate is the perfect manager for the FA. Typical yes man blazer.

Articulate, finger on the Twitter pulse when it comes to discussing the social issues of the day in pressers, I imagine he goes down well with corporate sponsors and other ‘stakeholders’ on Zoom calls... which is surely the most important thing 😏

How do we play? what formation did we used?

I didnt see the game

3-4-3. Some good players England, but looked like they lacked ideas, had all the ball but did nothing with it, just like watching rovers really. They’ll probably be going out in the group stages for the 5th time out of 6.

Main issue for England at the moment is there is no clear squad really. The only definite on the teamsheet is Kane. You could make a case for multiple players for any other role in the team.

Not ideal being so up in the air 2 months before a major tournament.

For what it's worth I would aim for something like :

                       Pickford

  James     Stones.  Maguire.   Chilwell

             Foden.   Rice     Mount

       Rashford.   Kane.   Stirling

But really you look at that side and say it is very talented, and you would love to have a few of those players in your team. But where's the experience? Maguire and Pickford have been shaky, Henderson's injured. Stones has only just come back into the squad.

Tricky. I can see the the attraction in Lingard to add some experience. But not really inspirational.

I'm very happy Lingard is there. He's in on form and showing that Solskjaer really isn't the man for United given he was so far from their first team.

It's his pressing off the ball that impresses me as much as his ability on it. Keep it up and he is worth a place in the squad and could be knocking on the door of the 11.

For me it is Rashford, Sterling and Sancho who should be looking over their shoulders. Though Sancho was beginning to show form before picking up a knock.

Foden, Grealish, Lingard, Mount. There are probably other form players from this season I've forgotten. They are the ones whom I'd be very happy to see us starting.

Not sure why Lingard has been recalled. Shown nothing for 2 or 3 years apart from the last month. In my opinion there are better younger players that should be well ahead of him. He's a bit like Mowbrays Bennett and Evans.

I'm assuming that they are using the game to test some players against a weak opposition, because its no where near the strongest team available

England under 21's undoubtedly have some very talented players so why on earth are they being managed by Adrian Boothroyd. Talk about a dinosaur.

I agree. Boothroyd has a squad filled with Premier league regulars and they hardly got a shot off. For a brief moment the England youth sides were doing well. I hope that they pick it up quickly against Portugal.
