I think its abundantly clear we don't have a release clause of 8 million quid for Arma. Waggot wouldn't have been going on about 30 million otherwise. I suspect there is no release clause at all, and I'd be beyond reluctant to put one in any future contract either unless it was silly figures.

The problem is, sometimes it may be unavoidable. Say Armstrong says in the summer, ill stay and sign a new deal as long as I can have a 20m release clause, baring in mind he would have a year left, wed take that 100%.

20 million is different gravy to 8 million. As I said though I'd still be trying to get that up through other incentives, and explain that a Prem club that really values and wants to use him and not just bench him will pay upwards of that. A small portion of the sale fee may also persuade him that the club earning more for him is to his benefit. But yes if we really had to take 20 million on the contract then sure. Better than losing him on a free a year later or having our arm twisted at 10 or so this summer due to our position.

My point is just that there are very likely ways to get that figure up and I would explore them.

Don't know if it's been mentioned. But our old striker Rudy Gestede is since November last year playing for Melbourne Victory. The scary thing though is that they have a certain disgusting parasite as the assistant to the head coach. steve k**n is there for some reason. How does that pos still getting to work in professional football?!?

I imagine Nixon know Moyes fairly well, both Glaswegians ‘in the industry’ that have lived around Lancs for donkeys years, so he may well have an inside track on who he ‘likes’ player-wise.

Doesn’t necessarily mean he thinks he’s good enough for a side with aspirations for the top end of the PL or lead to bids at West Ham, the porn barons have a lot of say when it comes to signings.

Does anyone else remember something about Nixon having..er "connections" with Anderson, Kean et al, during the dark age?

I never forgot Moyes' intervention after that Bolton game, speaking up-with Coyle- for Kean. Surprise, surprise..the agent, Kenny Moyes, another football agent, is Davy boy's brother!

The Newcastle chronicles suggesting it is 40% of any profit we make on Armstrong.

Scandalous if we agreed to such a high percentage

I definitely read somewhere that Newcastle will get 30% of a future transfer fee. Could be wrong of course.

When you consider the deal they got him on it's no surprise there's a big sell on.

Really? The guy had only really done anything in league 1 to be fair with the exception of a few decent performances for Barnsley in the championship.

He had failed at Bolton prior to joining us on loan and I didn't think he was amazing in league one.

Surely a deal rising to 3 million with 20 % sell would have been about right.40% Is a way too much to have agreed at the time

Christ almighty, no wonder we didn't sell him in January.

A sell on that high almost makes selling him at any point pointless (unless under duress or if in dire need of funds to avoid FFP of course). It means you can't possibly get what the player is worth to you, but only ever a little over half. If the sell on really is that high we should have offered more of the money up front to bring it down, or bigger performance/promotion bonuses.

A sell on that high can even end up bad for the initial selling club, as the new club will be reluctant to sell at all and the player might spend his career there or run his contract down. 20 percent of something is better than 40 percent of nothing.

£1.75 million with a load of add on's and sell on was probably the only way we'd get him back then.  He was well thought of around the lower leagues and any less we'd have had competition.

Very good signing at the time and the deal was about right because i'm not sure they wanted to let him go. Still very young and they could carry him and continue loaning him out no problem.

Just highlights to me if you find a player that fits what you want and has a bit of pedigree you have to bite the bullet and go for it.  Compared to the Brereton signing it looks a bargain.

Newcastle have played a blinder there.

If there is ever concrete premier league interest in him, he'll ask to leave us. He won't give up PL footy (and the wages) to stay with Moggas midtable Rovers.

Also gives Newcastle the opportunity to buy him back at a significant knock down fee.

Win - win for Newcastle. We lose either way.

We won't be able to hold him here against his will, players and agents have the power to move if they want.

We got ourselves a regular goal scorer in the championship. Hardly lost out. We may not see the full amount of profit but I’d suggest we still benefited from the transfer.

Yer, i do agree having a goal scorer has obviously benefitted us.

We'll lose out on the transfer fee regardless though, which was the point.

For the duration of his contract, of course we can hold him here against his will. It's just a matter of being committed to that and willing to take the potential loss of money. Will and willpower. But we don't have those and we need money.

But it can happen, look what nearly happened with King.
