Does that mean by process of deduction the other two will be staying? Excellent news if true.

Good luck to Rothwell. Largely mismanaged by Mowbray and should do well under a different manager.

Blatantly untrue, but your Mowbray hatred clearly skews any sense of logic.

He arrived as a player who would score a screamer every 6 months and could never show enough to warrant a regular start, often from a wide position, after being in and out at League 1 Oxford.

He has been moved into a midfield 3 and this season a midfield 2 which has seen him mature and become more consistent and reliable, improvements which have seen him attract interest elsewhere. He definitely has grown considerably as a player under Mowbray and should feel a lot of appreciation towards him.

Mowbray thought he could turn him into Benrahma - that's mismanagement.

He if I recall compared him to Benrahma by saying that he has similar levels of talent but needs to get more goals and assists.

But its an irrelevance. He turned him from an ineffective yet flash player with the occasional screamer to a central midfielder who became wanted by Bournemouth.

He played him as an AML for a year - it was more than a passing comment that he had a similar build / skill set / level of talent.

He didn't turn him into anything - he simply started playing him in his natural position. He was always a CM.

I don't know where Rothwell will end up. He is not a premier league standard player on a regular enough basis, but he is to much of a luxury to have in a team battling for promotion. He would be ideal in a team strolling promotion, like Fulham did this season.

Think he screwed himself over in the second half of the season. Think a lot of interest will have cooled.

He's got the ingredients to be a key Championship promotion player, maybe even Prem relegation battler. Good range of passing, excellent running with the ball, Mowbray has made his pressing and harassing much much better. But until he sorts out his decision making he's going to struggle. Loses the ball in dangerous areas and runs down blind allies.

Think he'll end up with a sideways move to a top half championship team. Might get more money though given he's on a free.

Don't think Rothwell has enough final product to be a PL player. I guess we'll see, but I disagree with the idea he's become in any way consistent or reliable. He's only ever performed here in purple patches.

They should have let the manager manage, £3.5m could have made the difference as we all know his money buys have mostly been outstanding.

Had we gone to play offs with Rothwell playing well we would not debate on this....we took our chance and failed. Atleast he was cheap when signed so nothing to dwell on.

Scored too few goals and never made enough correct decisions in the final third to be an effective attacking midfielder. His darting runs often flattered to deceive. Of the three contract trio, he was the one I was least worried about. Never looked happy at the club.

if he goes to a team with an attack minded manager he`ll do ok,always thought rothwell was a natural just behind the striker type of player,if he goes to scotland(rangers were apparently interested,he`ll score an absolute shedful and probably get a big money move to the premier league),bloody mowbray had him collecting the ball from the centre backs wasting his best attributes

Players under contract next season, starting 11.

Kaminski

JRC, Ayala, Wharton, Pickering

Dack, Travis, Buckley

Brereton, Gallagher, Hedges

Subs: Markanday, Edun, Carter, Vale, Brown, A.Philips, Dolan, Pears, Barnes.

Contract negotiations: Lenihan and Nyambe

May be sold: Brereton

We are very thin in the defence and midfeld at the moment.

To those subs I would add Adam Wharton, Jake Batty, Cirino, and the greek keeper before Pears.

He has had by far his best season in that role in which Mowbray has apparently caused him to waste his best talents. He has matured off the ball and it allows him to take the ball across long distances and is a useful tool in breaking at speed.

When he has played further forward, he doesn't have that same amount of space to drive into and he struggles to get involved.

It is dangerous to just starting listing kids as part of the potential squad.

As mentioned on another thread, for me Brown and indeed Vale need loan spells next season. The likes of A.Wharton, Phillips, Batty, Cirino etc are all total rookies, if any break through next season it should be seen as a bonus, not an expectation.

On Rothwell.

I won't forget that Mowbray actually did play him in central against Brentford at home when we first signed him in 2018. We beat them 1-0 and he was arguably best player on the pitch... But then proceeded to mess around with him for the next 3 years benching him for the likes of Richie Smallwood and Elliot Bennett. Laughable and infuriating.

That was not the same position as he was more advanced and had Smallwood and Evans behind him that day.

He dropped in later in the game and played deeper.

Lengthy article in The Athletic today on our oncoming 'talent drain': https://theathletic.com/3286731/2022/05/09/blackburn-rovers-talent-drain-from-mowbray-and-recruitment-team-to-brereton-diaz-and-captain-lenihan/ (paywall warning!).

No doubt a lot of this being fed to the journo by Mowbray's reps/friends, but always interesting when an 'outsider' journalist at The Athletic takes a deep dive on Rovers.

- Mentions BBD valued at £15m, but only a small portion of that would be added to a limited transfer budget. Players don't feel too strongly about Mowbray leaving given pending contract expiries. More focused on their own careers/finances at the moment.

Worth putting on here. A summer of scraping the barrel again despite a big sale?

Maybe a few years ago. Not now. 4 goals in his last full Championship season. Makes Gallagher look like Shearer.

More than Dolan and Khadra then... 😉
