When will players like Smith learn to keep their mouths shut?

If he was indeed Leeds through and through he'd have stayed at the club to help them back in to the Premiership. As for his England chances, well if he's good enough he'll play regardless of what division he's in.

Sutton is obviously the closest player to Smiths situation but at least Sutton wasn't a fan of the club.

It’s hard to say how you'd react in similar circumstances but it would take a hell of allot to prise me away from the club I love.

Deary deary me.

Smith has gone up in my estimations by signing for Man Utd.

Football is a game, yes it means alot to us all, but like it or not, it's a game.

The moronic Leeds fans, who have branded Utd rivals for no reason, should grow up and wish him well.

If I played for Rovers, and we got relegated and Utd came in for me, I'd leave, yet would still love Rovers.

Who comes first, yourself or a money grabbing football club, run by people who always put themselves first.

Smithy has Leeds in his blood

...That's what he's been trying to tell us for years.

But forget all the rubbish from Smith about being a lifelong Leeds supporter, who only bleeds white blood.

The reality is he's quite content to spit in the face of the Leeds fans who carried him on their shoulders. It gives me no pleasure whatsoever that my earlier criticisms of Smith have been vindicated after his treacherous move to Old Trafford.

I'd like to think of myself as (usually being) a pretty good judge of character, especially when it comes to spotting scumbags.

His move across the Pennines to the Red Scum is far, far worse than Rio Ferdinand's transfer. Smithy has betrayed the Elland Road faithful in the most sickening way imaginable by deceiving them that he was Leeds through and through.

This odious badge slag cares only about himself.

He couldn't give a stuff about anyone else.

On the pitch, Smith has been a nasty thuggish little yob. But off the pitch he's far worse - a dirty, deceitful, two-faced disgrace to mankind. And that's putting it mildly!

"Is there any club that you could never join?" asked the presenter of Soccer AM a year ago.

"Manchester United," was Smith's immediate reply back then.

In July 2003, he said: "If Leeds were ever relegated it would take a better type of person to stay and say we're all going to stick together and make sure the club gets back to where it belongs."

A few weeks ago, he changed his tune slightly, saying: "It's always been an ambition of mine to move abroad and play in one of the other top leagues in Europe. This could also make it easier for me to return to Leeds one day."

It was only the day after Leeds' final match at Elland Road, that Smith finally came clean - "There's no reason why I can't join Man United," he said.

I bet his agent has been busy telling him how much he could earn from off-the-field activities at Old Trafford. No doubt Smith would have been lapping this up like a cat to a bowl of cream. You can just imagine him saying: "Yeah, I know Liverpool and Newcastle would be less controversial, but hey, I can earn myself a packet here going to Man U."

"Yeah, definitely," replies Mr Agent. "I'll make sure you get your hands on a nice share of the merchandising income there."

I'm just grateful that this dirty scumbag wasn't picked for Euro 2004. I would have been sickened this summer to see him in an England shirt.

Smith spoke of how "fantastic" it was to join Man United today.

He's been guilty of the ultimate act of betrayal.

I hope next season that supporters of other clubs let him know just what they think of him.

But then again, as I said, Smith probably wouldn't be too bothered by that. He doesn't feel any guilt at all in moving to Man United, because he couldn't give a flying toss what anyone else thinks. And why should he when he's probably concluded that the money he can earn in off-the-field endorsements at Man United far outweighs any negatives that are involved in moving to the club...

Look at the arrogant posing barsteward on one of his photo shoots HERE

He'll be rubbing his hands with glee at how much he can earn from similar activities at Old Trafford.... mad.gif

Don't be a silly Euro billy.

Smith is just like anyone else who has been offered the chance to treble his wages and play for one of biggest and best employers in his industry.

Just ask Damien Duff.

Perhaps, but Duff didn't leave for a bitter rival after saying that it was the one team in the world he would never play for.

This wouldn't be nearly as appalling had Smith not openly professed his undying love for Leeds throughout his career. All the "I bleed white" talk proved to be complete and utter bull****. It's one thing to leave a club; it's another to leave the club that you profess love; and it's quite another to leave your "beloved" club for a bitter rival.

What makes this most sickening of all for me was that I really believed Smith. Duff left reluctantly, thanking Rovers fans as he left and thereby leaving the door open for a possible return someday; Smith didn't seem to think twice about the consequences of his actions, slamming shut the door behind him.

This whole episode just goes to show that it's a much different world we live in today.

I'm just using what AESF said (I'm assuming that he didn't just make it up):

"Manchester United," was Smith's immediate reply back then.

Apologies.

AESF was probably the interviewer.

He's also a United player now.

Someone phoned in to 909 on Monday to say that they had seen him at a Rugby League match on Saturday. After imploring him not to move to the Theatre of Merchandising, good old Smithy descended into a tirade of abuse. Nice.

After his smug interview on MUTV today, I wonder will his naive ambition to return to Leeds at some point still be in the offing? dry.gif

It's difficult to put this into a Rovers' perspective.

Perhaps if Shearer had gone to The Red Scum declaring that he wanted to win medals & further his football career then we might be able to empathise with the Leeds fans. But he didn't.

Similarly if Garner had gone to The Dingles at some point then we all would have been similarly cheesed off.

I reckon Alan Smith has been the architect of his own downfall by professing his undying loyalty to Leeds United. Sure, he can jump ship to another club because Leeds have been relegated, but to join Leeds' worst enemies is tactless in the extreme.

Reap your own rewards Smith, and just pray that Leeds don't draw The Red Scum in a cup game or that Leeds don't get promoted next year (or, hope above hope, that the Scum don't get relegated.)

"Badge kissers" should be sneered at unless they are (as previously mentioned) Matt le Tissier or Steve Bull who really knew the meaning of loyalty.

Shearer wanted to join Man Ure for those very reasons. Uncle Jack wouldn't allow him to move to OT and back at the time Newcastle were a viable looking alternative in that respect.

Looking at it from a neutral standpoint, still very harsh on Smith. Leeds wanted to sell him far more than he wanted to leave and given a free choice where would you expect him to go, to one of the two clubs where he's guaranteed to regularly win things or somewhere else?

Of course if I was a Leeds fan I'd be hugely brassed off and wish he'd gone anywhere else but.

These 8 pages are a cypher for the Duff and Shearer experiences at Rovers.

Apart from winning things and dominating the league/Europe (unrealistic), the next big dream is that "one of us" becomes a super star but stays his career at our club (seemingly more possible but in reality just as unrealistic). Unless you are a member of the big boys club which for three heady seasons the Rovers were and for two heady seasons Leeds sold their club for.

I have never met Alan Smith so what I am about to write might come over as very unfair.

From what I have seen of his personality/character, I am not in the least bit surprised that he has moved to Man U. After all, even on his past season's performance (and certainly on his showing as an England u-21 international), he would have got to go to Portugal ahead of Vassell. Perhaps having his particular personality in the squad was not an appealing proposition. The guy has a football talent, great energy, a thoroughly unpleasant character and is seemingly not the brightest.

The only surprises are that anyone other than Leeds fans should react with shock/horror and that how little he was sold for. Did NOBODY else want him?

Looking at it from Smith's standpoint:

1) He was undoubtedly sold the Ridsdale dream so was encouraged by Leeds to expect perpetual Champs League and all that pertained.

2) Had he said "no, I am staying at Leeds" then Krasner and co would be handing the keys to Elland Road over to the administrators this morning. There was no possibilty on earth that he could stay at Leeds. Either the club sold him or the break-up specialists would have got rid.

Smith is simply guilty of being stupid enough to have allowed himself to have become the fall guy for the Leeds' fans' anger.

Krasner has played a blinder in getting his hands on the best part of £7m of cash or near cash and force-sold an iconic player without getting any abuse for doing so. In doing that, he has done at least twice as well as McKenzie did when he offloaded Kewell in not dissimilar circunstances last summer.

Smith has shown his true colours now !!!

I have thought all along that he was just saying what the leed's fan's want to hear. But when it came to the crunch, money talked.

He is over rated too, yea when he's playing he gives 110% but his abilty isnt anything special. He is just a young paul dickov.

one good thing about this move is that it is another bad buy for ferguson, just like saha he is trying to get a quick fix partner for van fallover rather than pay for class !

Cannot agree with anything you say about the money.

Alan smith would of stayed if leeds stayed in the premier league. He is a player who wears the leeds badge on his heart.

The only reason he has moved is to stay in the premiership and improve his international chances and his european status as a great player

and do you really think he is good enough to play for england ?

I do not believe he will ever return to leeds as the fans wont have him back now.

However i deffinatly believe he is good enough for england.

Alan smith, vassell or heskey???? I choose Smith

the three of them are not good enough for england.

i would have owen, rooney, beattie and defo ahead of all them

i would even have him in the squad

I can’t blame Smith for leaving Leeds. He isn’t the type of player who wants to be playing First Division football at the stage of his career where he could be challenging for a place in the England squad if he was with a better club.

What ever rivalry there is between Leeds and United fans I don’t think there will be the same hatred shown to Smith like we’ve seen in the past with players such as Cantona and Ferdinand. Smith was loved by the Leeds fans and they all knew he was going to leave, but whom to?

I don’t understand the rivalry; to me it just seems pure hatred towards the United fans.

Smith only left because he didn’t want to play First Division football.

From Smith’s point of view he’s joined United to win Championships and other things, knowing that he probably won’t go back to play at Elland Road for a long time, I can’t see Leeds getting back up straight away.

Smith goes to United, he’ll be playing with better players and therefore more people will take more notice of him as a player that can only mean a regular place in the England squad.

Smith targets starting spot
