Ok i disagree with everyone. Dwight Yorke has done well the last 2 games, he has worked very hard, could have done with a bit more luck yesterday but i was happy with him, especially first half. Im also sure dickov will be more than capable of forming a good partnership with stead. He runs the channels, he looks for the ball instead of waiting for it to come to him, he makes himself available on either side of the pitch and can score goals. Cole has gone, get over it, yes he was our top scorer but he didnt get on with the manager, therefore no point in him staying. I can assure you we will get more out of dickov this season than we would cole.

As for the matteo situation, i still think defence but he has done ok in midfield and its only a friendly, this is where things get tried out, people are reading too much into it.

I also havent seen anyone give reid credit for a really good first half yesterday. Some great defending and good play going forward.

The season hasnt even started yet. But people are writing him off. Its absolutely unbelievable. Has it ever occured to you that Graeme Souness and his team of coaches know more about football than you do?

People are writing him off because he's a defender playing in midfield, against crap opposition nowhere near the pace of the PL. In addition its something he did all last season without much luck, so there's more than enough reason to be wary.

But I admire your loyalty to the man. tongue.gif

Its not as much loyalty as it is just me realising that he hasnt even played a competitive game for us yet, but people are still writing him off already.

Vintage Rovers fans.

It's an opinion. Do you realise the meaning of the word? Not everyone has to conform to your views on Matteo being the next Roy Keane.

Where did I make any reference to Matteo being as good as Keane? I havent made any statements about his ability as a centre midfielder. I dont know enough about him to be able to say he's going to be great or he's going to be rubbish. I havent judged him at all because he's only just joined us and he deserves a clean slate.

Try reading my posts in full before you reply.

You didn't make any reference to him being the next Keane Neil but sadly Rover6 can't come up wuth any better defence of his point so he has to make one up. Keane is/was the ultimate box to box midfielder something we are hoping that Ferguson will become. If Matteo plays in midfield he will be a holding midfielder to protect the back 4 if the pre-season is anything to by.

Even though he has done a good job in that role I will bow to the knowledge of people that haven't even seen him play there though as they obviously know better. Oh sorry I forgot Blackwell said Leeds went down because of Matteo, silly me.

i thought leeds went down because they played to many youngsters

Sigh... how old is Caldwell? They played youngsters who aren't good enough yet like Caldwell(and the extremely promising, but overrated for his current performances, Milner), players who couldn't give a stuff about the club like Viduka, numerous inferior loan signings like Camara and Domi, and got relegated because of all those factors and others too.

Yes Radebe and Matteo played together. Though it would be extremely fitting if they hadn't given Blackwell's comments. I think they played there against Arsenal at Highbury for one.

The fact that Matteo is probably a better centre-half then midfielder is irrelevant, he should play wherever he will contribute the most to our team. If Souness judges playing say Nisse at centre-half and Matteo in midfield makes for a stronger team than playing Matteo centre-half and Thompson in central midfield, then playing Matteo as a midfielder is the right decision. Football is a team game.

No to Earnshaw for me, I'm not convinced he can do it consistently enough for the top flight, he scored his goals in bunches last year and then went a couple of long periods without scoring. We'd also have to put up with waggy complaining about dwarfs and what not, probably saying how signing a young player is great at the same time in typical contradictory style as well.

Hi everyone, im in the U.S.A at the moment visiting friends and family so i couldnt get to the game at Preston y'sday. I was wondering how many Rovers fans were there in the end? I know we sold out our 1,000 allocation, but rovers fans could pay on the day. Does anyody know or perhaps hazard a guess on how many Rovers fans were at Preston?

With a gate of less than 8K I wouldn't imagine that there was anywhere near 4k rovers fans - though a good and noisy following none the less.

A very disappointing game - on this performance a struggle for both Rovers and PNE this season. Though, as agreed by the friends that went with me, we did feel that certain players (Ferguson imparticular) were only getting back into their stride, very rarely making a tackle. It looked every inch a pre-season friendly to build up fitness - though Amo and Nissa's performances do demonstrate the need to play Matteo in mid-field to provide extra cover. On the evidence from Saturday, I am amazed that we haven't let in a goal yet - we definitely would have conceeded to a premiership team if we played as we did on Saturday.

Hopefully this is just a fitness exercise, and the eventual team will show more composure on the ball.

BTW I thought that Yorke actually worked hard - but too often his passes were backwards, and what pace he once had he seems to have lost - better off-load now and bring someone else in rover.gif

If that stand held 6k then there were easily 3000 there probably about 3500. I had a really good day personally met up with a few board members who all made the missus very welcome so cheers for that. Although she said she also had a really good day and wants to come along again so maybe I shouldn't be thanking you. wink.gif

With the weather as it was a decent match was never likely especially at this stage of the season with the players only having a few weeks of training under their belts. A few positives and a few negatives but nothing to worry about. We look fairly solid to me and if that continues the rest will follow.

What a top day yesturday was, great seeing everyone again.

Agreed, with apologies to Scotty, Mr & Mrs Manchester and Mr Sox, who I hardly got chance to speak to (they got off lightly I guess). Yesterday was what pre-seasons are all about, a crack with some mates, a few beers, a nice walk, some more beer, some moderately entertaining football, an impromptu kick about in the park, another nice walk, more beers and more chat. Cracking day.

Glenn you got home yet after doing a Scotty? wink.gif

Around 2am thanks. It wasn't so much as a Scotty as a Hannah biggrin.gif . I normally like York train station, but it's nowhere near as nice at 1am unsure.gif

Don't know about anybody else , but I find it rather worrying about the different viewpoints on here - some being positive /some being negative and some totally different to the reports in the rags.

Couldn't make it Saturday as I was otherwise engaged on a Stag do, but personally what I have read does not fill me with any confidence.

Although I know friendlies are essentially for blowing away the cobwebs, personally I feel Saturday should have been used for playing as near as possible the team that will line up against WBA against a stongish side, this being backed up with the game on Wednesday with the tinkering left for the game against Bray.

Now people may be able to convince me that Saturday's game was just a question of going through the motions for the Rovers with the weather and all that, but similar things seem to be still happening as they were last pre season and it didn't improve any once the season started.

From all accounts we where overrun for the first half hour and although Matteo would appear to be ok for filling in in midfield, would he be able to sustain it for a full season against Premiership opposition.

Dickov sounds like another Ashley ward - makes the runs but then thats it

Nissa - would appear to be still making the same errors and losing concentration.

Reid -injured again for the n'th time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Defence - too slow

Midfield - wayward passing

Forwards - Lack of shooting

Come on folks - for those that went convince the Capt that it was definitely just a typical pre season game,

Capt - it was definitely just a pre-season game. Trust me. The season doesn't start until the 14th.

Dickov did OK if you ask me - the only time Ward ever moved that quickly was to sign his contract. Still I'd better not praise him too much as it's not the done thing. Similarly Matteo looks a good player - "Oh no! he's playing defensive midfield! He's not quick enough. Look what happened to Leeds. Everyone panic! Woe is me!" Pass the razor blades.

Reid isn't a full back.

We've Sporting Lisbon, The Mighty Bray Wanderers and probably a behind closed doors friendly type thing to come I'd imagine, but I agree with you I'd rather see some sort of semblance of a settled team, even at this stage of the pre-season (and I'm well aware of the arguments about testing different formations out). This Yorke "in the hole" thing doesn't work (choose your own selection of jokes at this point) for me. Last season showed that we need some width down the left - if Del Pedalo is injured play Gresko out there (he did OK on the left the other week by all accounts). Surely it would be better to try that than accomodating The Yorkemeister.

What I will say is that for all this pessimism we are unbeaten and we've hardly conceded and goals. What more does anyone want? Eh????

(BTW Capt - some of the set pieces were sublime. You'll love it next season. Makes you wonder what they do in training.)

We have some tough opening fixtures,we'll very soon see if this team can cut the mustard Bob and make no mistake, with the signings we have made NOBODY really knows at this stage.....................

No - think we have been sold an extra here from 'Casualty' - thought Reid could be a good buy for us but now I think we should get rid - too mnay injuries for my liking.

'some of the set pieces were sublime' - go on tell me - we had a shot on target ohmy.gif

Thanks for the update - so come the WBA game I'll blame you if it all goes belly up. thumbs-up.gif

me and few others took a smack or 2 near train station from nob enders. had to get police escort

We got a nice little escort wherever we went all day. TO be fair though the Preston police were decent enough, if not a little OTT.

Exactly SG - totally agree. Let's at least wait until we lose our first few games and then get on a downer. No point doing it now. Although I admit some of us can't wait that long.

I have to admit, I am slightly worried at the position we are in, in going into the first few games of the season. With Southampton, Arsenal, United and Newcastle coming thick and fast, I am worried. I know it’s only pre-season, but in the two games that I have seen I have been disappointed. On Saturday we failed to keep the ball for long period of times, which we know we are capable of.

Attacking wise, we look weak, not enough quality. We have a poor start and Souness could be facing what he was after the Leeds game last season.

I saw a little bit of trouble whilst walking back to the train station in the centre of town.

Nothing that the police couldn’t handle, from what I could see it looked like the Burberry lot causing trouble.

I think the police generally in Preston were OTT, just in case something like that was going to happen. Overall I enjoyed the whole day.
