Signed to provide cover for Matt Woods, the well built but stiff limbed player never really achieved this target. Both his first team appearances were disappointing and he was not permitted any other chance. If the theory was that First Division football was too fast for him he struggled for pace in the lower leagues too and eventually moved back to his native North-East. A fitter at Blackhall  Colliery he remained in the game managing Horden Colliery Welfare for some ten years. Often his initials were given as J P, the second name being his mother’s maiden name, Park, but this was not registered at birth.
