Although born in Bedford ,Airey grew up in Blackburn and starred the Olympic when they won the Blackburn Times Cup in 1955 and for East Lancashire Coachbuilders when they won the Cotton Cup in 1957. Although the Rovers recognised his promise as a right winger of dash and determination, Airey was reluctant to give up work and position himself in an echelon behind the incomparable Douglas and Roy Isherwood. His debut came on the other flank when he scored a goal of beauty against Burnley, waltzing around the full back before firing home. Thereafter he had little opportunity but he made 53 appearances for Morecambe before breaking his leg. Back in the Blackburn Combination he appeared in the final of the Eddleston Cup, but retired from the game when he broke his leg for the third time.
