Don Mackay bought Agnew for a club record transfer fee but both men were to regret the transaction. A strong, hard tackling midfielder he sustained an ankle injury that required surgery almost immediately and his entire first team career at the club was truncated into a period of less than two weeks. Suffering from the departure of Mackay, Agnew was never in Kenny Dalglish's plans and after two seasons almost inactive he was transferred to Leicester. Later he helped Sunderland to promotion to the Premiership and finished his league career with a troubled spell at York City. He became assistant manager at Gateshead  but left when Paul Proudlock was dismissed and signed for West Auckland. He then commenced a coaching and managerial career that took in the Middlesbrough Academy, Leeds reserve side, assistant manager at Hartlepools, Leeds Under 18 side and then Middlesbrough reserve team coach. He later became assistant manager to Steve Bruce at Hull City but in December 2014 left to take a similar position at Middlesbrough with Aitor Karanka. In 2016 he became caretaker manager when Karanka was sacked but could not prevent them from being relegated. He was out of the game for six months before being appointed first team coach at Aston Villa. His nephew Jordan Rhodes.also  played for the Rovers.
