Rovers face Newcastle United in the FA Cup fifth round at Ewood on Tuesday, in yet another cup match-up between the two sides.

Newcastle have found themselves regularly drawn against Rovers in cup competitions over the last few decades and they have been the usual winners of most ties.

The visitors also won a semi-final replay at Elland Road against Second Division Rovers on the way to winning the FA Cup in 1952.

This will be the seventh FA Cup tie staged at Ewood between the two sides. Here are details of the previous six memorable encounters…

Rovers 4-1 Newcastle, 14th January 1928, Attendance: 27,652

Rovers recorded a convincing third round win on the way to lifting the FA Cup in 1928. Syd Puddefoot, George Thornewell and Tom Mitchell (2) were the scorers.

Rovers 1-0 Newcastle, 13th February 1993, Attendance: 19,972

Roy Wegerle, deputising for the injured Alan Shearer, started the year in great form with five goals – four in cup competitions. His last goal for Rovers was this excellent winner after a mazy dribble and set up an FA Cup quarter-final with Sheffield United. Wegerle left for Coventry in March as part of an exchange deal for Kevin Gallacher.

Rovers 1-2 Newcastle, 18th January 1995, Attendance: 22,658

Early exits from the UEFA Cup, League Cup and FA Cup helped Rovers to concentrate on winning the championship. This replay saw Swiss right back Marc Hottiger fire in a 25-yard screamer and Lee Clark net a late winner after Chris Sutton’s equaliser.

Rovers 0-1 Newcastle, 24th February 1999, Attendance: 27,483

The FA Cup had a bigger draw 25 years ago, with a bumper turnout for a midweek replay to watch relegation-bound Rovers. Before he became prolific at Fulham and haunted Rovers in Division One, a 20-year-old Louis Saha had an inconspicuous loan spell at Newcastle from Metz. The only real highlight was the winner at Ewood, latching on to Dietmar Hamann’s raking cross-field ball and finding the bottom corner with his left foot.

Rovers 1-2 Newcastle, 31st January 2000, Attendance: 29,946

Despite Rovers now being in Division One, a near-capacity crowd watched the same teams a year later. Alan Shearer’s first three returns to Ewood Park had been very unproductive, with the visitors not even scoring one goal. He finally got his payback against those Rovers fans still booing him by scoring the opener, before kneeling and pointing at the Blackburn End fans – in a rare departure from his customary arm-in-the-air celebration. Matt Jansen equalised soon after but Shearer had the last word in front of the away support when he got the second-half winner.

Rovers 2-4 Newcastle, 15th January 2019, Attendance: 14,228

Bradley Dack’s superb header at St James’ Park helped Rovers to a third-round replay in which Newcastle raced to a 2-0 lead. Adam Armstrong and Darragh Lenihan pulled the goals back before half-time and Dack should have made it 3-2 with a golden chance he surprisingly put wide. Extra time was needed to seal the tie for the visitors. David Raya spilled Fabian Schar's long-range shot and offside Joselu reacted quickest to score, before Ayoze Perez wrapped up the win.
