[Archived] Benni Mccarthy - Gone

Recommended Posts

Good to see someone putting forward a balanced perspective on this.

Yes, he his out of order for engineering a move by failing to turn up for training but some people have short memories.

I can think of several occasions when Benni has scored that all important goal or tucked away a crucial penalty that has meant a valuable 3 points. I have often said to myself, "Thank you Benni for being so cool under such pressure, you are a class player".

Also, as Grizfoot points out there was only one player on the park who showed any class against Fulham.

90% of members on this board are against hoofball and playing one up front.

Ask yourself, Do you honestly think this style of football suits him. In his position you would be really brassed off sat on the bench against Villa after putting in a big performance a few days before. I always thought that if you are given the opportunity to shine and took your chance, then you would keep the shirt for the next game.

The only person to come out of this with any credit is BS. It's only a couple of weeks ago that he was seriously panicking about his job and a large percentage of our supporters wanted him out. My God, it's a sad day when you get chastised for having the bottle to take a short corner against the managers wishes.

I could have sworn that I heard Benni's name chanted several times against Fulham, or maybe I was mistaken. Perhaps it was just Grizfoot and myself?.

I do rate Bennie as a player - but as a sulker, as he has turned as he is now, the fact he does not want to play for Rovers - does not want to honour his contract etc that is the Bennie Rovers have at the moment.

We do not know everything what has happened behind the scenes at Rovers. But we know that he has been encouraged to lose weight and get himself fitter - he has failed to do so. That in itself makes him less affective as a player. It also smacks of arrogance - "I should play go to the world cup, because I am Bennie Macarthy". That is the attitude he is showing.

Yes he HAS done good for Rovers, but he does not want ot do so anymore. Therefore that makes him a useless player for Rovers - therefore the club and the supporters have to move on.

He has chosen to turn his back on Rovers and it supporters - hence the club and it supporters are now doing likewise. hardly a game went by when Bennies name was not sung by the fans - yet.

Very good signing for the club and most likely one of the most talented players that we've ever had. Shame that he couldn't stay focused and fit, but can't help but feel this was mismanaged. Fact of the matter is that he wasn't an Allardyce player and he was never going to be.

I'm calling you out on this one. I'd say it's quite the opposite. Truly gifted players are like gold dust to managers. There's no way Allardyce would shun McCarthy because he's not a percentage player. The truth is that Benni wasn't prepared to pull his weight for the team. His unprofessional conduct in this situation only stands to corroborate that.

I think you need to remember its easy to look cool when you actually don't give a fook!

I too liked watching Benni parade his skills but he only did it on his terms - it's amazing now that playing for South Africa is now so important to him when he put himself in exile for a number of years - yes we know issues with managers!

He'll score a few for West Ham - if he gets picked and then he'll be drain on their resources for 2 yrs - and to think the dildomen were preaching about previous owners throwing their money about with abandon!

We should put in his contract that he can't play against us on saturday just to be on the safe side!!. I reckon Nelson will kick lumps out of him though, if fatty does play.

People are talking about Benni's behaviour at the moment, but Big Sam has been out of order with his handling of Benni since day one at Rovers.

Coming out now and claiming that Benni is in it for the money is ridiculous, the guy said months ago that he would be happy to stay at Rovers if he got the time on the field - this is understandable seen as though he wants to be a part of the South Africa team for the world cup in his own country.

We haven't played him (instead opted for hoof-ball), and now we are losing a valuable asset, I think we still could have got more out of him.

Disappointing to see him go, and yeah it is disappointing that he didn't turn up for the last few training sessions - but Big Sam seems to suggest that our struggle this season has been because of Benni - yet he has hardly played him! His goal return last season was impressive, and this season he has been one of only a few players who look like they could score.

The truth is, he hasn't done a lot wrong on the pitch for us, lets hope that we don't forget that.

I'm not sure who we are going to find better to replace him with.

Benni has not been fit enough to warrant a run in the 1st team. When he has played, he has not put the effort or graft in, which the team needs (despite the wigan game, when he wanted to get his knees dirty for a change). We have been carrying him for to long now and its the right time to get rid of him!

As good as a player Benni is, he has turned out to be nothing more than a sulking, lazy fat, mercenary footballer. I dont think that you can criticise anyone at the club other than himself.

If he cant lose weight why should the club bend over backwards for him ? Everyone else seems to be able to meet their targets.

I am glad the lazy to$4er has left us, the fella is a disgrace no matter how good he thinks he is.

I'd like to thank Benni for having the priviledge of being able to watch him playing in the famous blue and white shirt.

A big thank you must also go to Mark Hughes and everyone at the club for bringing him to the club.

We shouldnt be so sour to what was a sad ending but arent they all ?

Good luck Benni and thanks for the memories.

Agreed JAL, Benni was great to watch when on his game, it's a shame it has come to this as I think he has acted in an appalling manner this week.

I'm glad we had him for thats for sure.

Cannot understand people blaming Sam for Benni situation. The guy has been dropped by all previous managers due to being fat and lazy. He turns up 1 game in 10 and expects to keep his place, then throws his toys out when the manager has the audacity to tell him to train harder. £2m+ is good cash for him, just dont waste it Sam!

On his day he was a bliss to watch - It will be said in trying times that we should have done more to keep him but I think it is time to move forward and part ways.

Good luck to Benni and can we please get a suitable replacement.

We should have insisted that he doesn't play Sat. He is at his best when motivated.

Same as I feel about Roque. Great player; SHOCKING attitude.

Agree. Although for me Santa Cruz was better than McCarthy.

What Benni needs to understand is that Sam trying to make him put the effort in was for his own benefit. If only he'd learnt this lesson in his younger days he could have been an exceptional footballer. For some bizarre reason people seem to think strikers fall into two categories. Ones that try and ones that can play. The true greats do both. If Benni had any sort of work ethic he could have been a world beater.

Santa Cruz worked hard for the side and, in my humble opinion, is one of the best target men in the game (when fit). For this reason i will remember him long after Benni McCarthy is a distant memory. When i consider the true greats who played for us in recent years alone (Shearer, Sutton, Hendry, Berg, Jansen, Dunn, Duff, Tugay, Bellamy and Santa Cruz) it just confirms to me how far off that bench mark McCarthy is.

Thanks for 1 good season Benni. But selling you on for 250k less than we paid for you seems pretty reasonable business to me.

It's now written in stone that he'll score on Saturday. Let's hope it's only a consolation.
