Someone should point out that MK Dons only formed in 2004, and all Wimbledon history stays with AFC Wimbledon...

MK Dons is a legal continuation of Wimbledon FC, AFC Wimbledon is the newly formed club.

Having said that results prior to 2004 should bear their old name 'Wimbledon FC' rather than MK Dons.

Initially that is what happened, but all history, and honours (and trophies), trademarks, web addresses etc got revoked from MK Dons in 2007 and were given back to the Borough of Merton, who subsequently gave them back to AFC Wimbledon. The other thing was that any references to MK Dons should only be made to events after 2004.

This was part of the deal so that the Football Supporters Federation would let MK Dons be members and not support boycotts against MK Dons.

btw soccerbase used to be a boring but simple website, but they've made it all fancy and it doesnt work nearly as well.

Partly true. The only thing that was revoked was the badge... and that was when they were still Wimbledon and had just moved to Milton Keynes. Something to do with it not being allowed to be used outside the Borough.

Everything else was voluntary to please the FSF who in turn dropped their boycott campaigns to visiting fans and as you say allowed them become members. Also, the original website www.wimbledon-fc.co.uk re-directs you to the new MK Dons URL.

They are still a legal continuation of WFC whether people like it or not.

MK Dons, in their words, say that they are club formed in 2004. All history and trophies associated with Wimbledon FC are now with AFC Wimbledon.

Saying "legal continuation" doesn't override the fact that MK Dons themselves say they were created in 2004.

As you said, it should say "Wimbledon FC"...but if the database only allows current clubs, AFC Wimbledon would be the more correct choice given the events since Wimbledon became MK Dons.

AFC Wimbledon (founded in 2002) are a brand new club though, MK dons allowed them to have the trophies but didn't have to. The only reason they did were to stop boycotts from opposition fans and to be accepted in the FSF amongst others.

The name MK Dons started in 2004 yes, but prior to that they were Wimbledon FC.

Wimbledon FC moved to Milton Keynes before the name change then continued in the same league, with the same players, manager etc under the new name shortly afterwards.
