Its appears that Phil Hughes will be the new gk coach now after Batty left last week.

Hughes was with Coyle at Burnley and Bolton

...and Wigan,...and Houston Dynamo. Jesus Christ, talk about keeping your mates in work!

Either that or Mrs Coyle needs to be on her guard!

No different from Mark Hughes who takes the same staff around with him wherever he goes. Most managers do the same.

Blame him? No but suggest he contributes to the problem? Well if he doesn't contribute anything why would people pay him to coach, so if the goalkeepers improve, even if they are rubbish to start with, and become marginally less rubbish, he's doing a decent job. If they show no improvement, or regress, then he's not good enough.

So are you saying that all the goalkeepers he has coached showed no improvement under him? He's worked with some decent 'keepers at the various clubs he has been at. You can have a world class 'keeper, but if the ten in front are useless then there is not a lot he can do. The difference between Roger Jones in 70-71 and 74-75 was what was in front of him. He was brilliant in a poor team, but we still got relegated and he was brilliant in a good team when we got promoted.

No I'm not saying that. All I asked was, is he any good? I don't know so I asked a genuine question and end up somehow having to justify myself. For all I know the guy might be the creme de la creme of gk coaches or he might be rubbish. There's only so much any coach can do but if he doesn't appear to improve keepers then there has to be some blame attached to him. You're right that the world's best gk still needs 10 guys in front of him doing their job too but awareness, recovering position quickly after saves etc are important and the coach can show his keepers have improved even if they still leak goals because others aren't working properly. So my question is, is this guy any good?

I agree regarding Roger Jones, my childhood hero. He didn't have a coach telling him how It should be done though; goalkeeping specialist coaches are a waste of a wage IMO.

sorry disagree on a GK coach being a waste. To a young up and keeper, showing him things can prove important. In fact, even experienced goalkeepers need a coach, as they normally train away from the rest of the group. Being a keeper is hard work, and foot movement, agility, etc is something that a keeper should not do on his own. A goalkeeper is a specialist position.

I think it depends on squads, 20/30 years ago teams wouldn't have 4/5 keepers through ranks like they do now.

I'd also say you judge a coaching team as a group, not the gk coach individually from the main gks performance. We had Mimms I think when Friedel was around, but I'd hardly say that Bobby was part responsible for the amazing performances of Brad! He was just a special keeper, and the manager/coaching staff at time knew they had safe hands behind.
