In tales of strikers gone by, I see Dom Sam scored at weekend whilst Jordan Rhodes came on as a sub for Sheff Wednesday at half time and was subbed back off 40 minutes later for tactical reasons

I know its hardly Cantona and Ferguson but I also heard a story on a podcast the other day of Neil Warnock giving Adel Taarabt the captaincy at QPR to try and focus him, but he was a terrible professional who never used to turn up etc so the senior pros were not happy, Paddy Kenny, Clint Hill etc all went into his office and said what are you playing at, Warnock said trust me and go with it because he will get us promoted. He did and they all went into his office at the end of the season and said yeah you were right!

That story is recounted in the podcast below along with some interesting insights about the Rovers during the Steve Kean era.

Worth a listen.

Danny retires. A shocking player for many clubs but he was fantastic here. A great fit for us during a challenging period for the club.

Can’t not remember DG fondly, did really well for us. Top bloke on and off the field 👍🏻

Shocking for many clubs? Sunderland in 2 spells, once when often using him as a wide player and in the Premier League, and once when his body has clearly packed in. Not the best loan spell at Hull who barely used him. Well remembered here, at Swansea, at Watford where he was the top scorer in the League and at Carlisle.

He was very poor at Sunderland (twice), Middlesbrough, Wolves and Hull. If you asked fans at some of those clubs they'd prob say he's one of the worst strikers they've had.

However, if you used him in the right way then he was a very, very good striker, as he proved here.

Yep, his goal record often gets mooted but he played in an SG position in a 4-2-3-1 when first at Sunderland. Not as a striker. Stick the guy up front and he performs mostly - hence scoring plenty of goals anywhere else he was.
