tomphil
Excellent way to silence doubts for a while at least and maybe the penny is dropping, attacking line up, start positive and stay at it. That's the way to go and it needs to be every week including away at Wigan. I fully expect a revert to type again like we've seen with previous managers but no need we've nothing to fear, Wigan will attack so we get in their faces and counter down the wing from the start not sit off and faff about letting them dictate like Oldham. Come on Tony being bold is the way in this league today proved it.

Even if they double up on him, it takes a player out of the equation for the others to exploit. No standing off and in their face from the kick off is definitely the way to go. Looking forward to Wigan where a win should set us up nicely.
sambo
After being critical in the last week, only right I praise TM for the much improved set-up today. No surprise it resulted in a win. Hopefully this is the start of our season!

Yep it really isn't rocket science and I really do feel TM's biggest weakness is overcooking things and making something straight forwards difficult when it needn't be. Just go out to bully and boss teams with a positive line up and that gives the platform needed for the players we have better than other teams to do their stuff. Sit off, afford too much respect to the opposition and just wait for your star men to do something and it just doesn't happen.

Backroom Tom Posted October 21, 2017 Backroom Share Posted October 21, 2017 Got the line up right today, that starting team should be beating most teams. Let's hope they can push on now

Let's hope TM thinks he has , at last, found his best line-up.
JHRover
Indeed. Good win today and the manager deserves the credit for that, as he did vs Rotherham, Bradford, Scunthorpe etc. The key isn't turning in a good win in every 3-4 games, its doing that for 3-4 games then maybe dropping points in the fifth. So whilst it is good to get back to winning ways Mowbray has a lot of hard work to do to convince that this side is going to push for a top 2 spot. Top 6 at the moment is largely meaningless given the congestion in the table from us down to about 17th. Infact we're nearer the drop zone in points than we are the top 2. At being 2 nil ahead bring Conway on for Chapman to make us more solid defensively and not let back them into the game. Evans for Dack was to make us solid again. We were 2 up and the game was won if we stayed solid and dont allow them back into the game.

Yesterday's team selection was reminiscent of the Bowyer era. Bowyer used to throw caution to the wind, (pun intended), when he was under pressure and badly needed a win. Chapman and Dack are our main threats. They need to be starting week in week out.

Looks like Mowbray thinks Dack isn't up to playing 90 minutes yet. Chapman's not there stamina wise at the moment either. It's a 14 man game now. Getting substitutions right is crucial. There's another similarlty to Bowyer too in that we've reached the dizzy heights of the top 6 a couple of times, only to get nosebleed and sink back. At Oldham, and in other games, we were chasing the game by the time they were brought on.

Chapman's stamina will come the more he comes. Yes football now is squad game. Very rare that any team doesnt use all 3 subs
arbitro
Yesterday dispelled one of Mowbrays theories about Chapman starting and not coming off the bench as an 'impact sub' (I really dislike that term). He was positive in possession and whilst his final ball wasn't always what it should have been he was a constant threat to Portsmouth. He did a manful job in defending too. The best 11 is slowly emerging but Mowbray has to realise this and where possible start with it.

No, not really, it just limited the options to who to play forward to so they just kept on coming at you but they, Portsmouth either made mistakes or didn't have anything in their locker to hurt us. Tend to disagree, Excellent management from TM yesterday protecting the lead at 2-1 becomes a different game. Go on then what would you have done differently than TM? No Portsmouth didn't have much in their locker, think fatigue was a factor get fresh legs on & more defensively minded players.

It's not excellent management as we went down to TEN men the manager got away with this one re the subs They'd have all carried on until at least the eighty minute mark before a change. Fatigue ? Took somebody for the first yesterday and they made the comment that one or two don't look like athletes. Negative tactics are just for the dull weak minded boys in this league everyone should stand up and be accountable for their roles and go for it like Smallwood does. Did I read that Gladwin was an option on the bench if he was that's dreadful management.

Tugay's Right Foot
Downing was a class above Ward. Distribution was good from the back. Another clean sheet. Please don't let Ward back, TM.
G Somerset Rover
Another typical Mowbray result tonight. We are not going up under him - it’s blindingly obvious. 1 win in 5 against some bang average LEAGUE ONE sides. Time to thank him for his efforts and send him on his way before it’s too late.
