Inverted winger is probably just a left sided midfielder if they were playing with 3 in there or something just like these left/right sided forwards who can only do that in a front three.

I.e not really a winger at all nor are they strikers. Verdict = Utility man with a left foot !

Perhaps an inverted winger is someone with a left foot who plays on the right or vice versa! If so, he'll fit right in.

Another Conway or another Whittingham ?

Hard to tell really as reading here he's been brought as back up to nearly every position lol that's why I threw in left sided utility man.

Thing is though we've lost Antonsson, Chapman might not be coming back so that's two left siders and Payne for Dacks back up so they've signed a left sider who can cover all those and he's Rovers player not someone else's.  20 games next season, a few goals and assists and his value has already gone up a bit.

I feel this signing is possibly being a bit over analysed, naturally as he's the first in but hopefully he isn't the major summer buy ?

I'm pretty sure Rothwell is right footed.

Rankin-Costello wont necessarily give a glowing report of Rovers without having had his own chance beyond the reserves yet.

Then again our record of using academy players in general is quite good (even if it's a result of relegation) ?

Lowe and Hanley in recent years, plus Nyambe and Lenihan for the last 2 seasons.

The messages are actually very similar to those posted by Gillingham fans on Dack last year...talented but injury prone etc. In fact many of the Gills fans were more scathing about Dacks attitude and fitness...none of us knew what to expect then either... so let’s see!

The difference between Dack and Rothwell is that Dack had previously excelled at L1 level scoring 20 goals in a campaign before having an off season so he clearly had the ability.

It would appear Rothwell has yet to consistently impress at even L1 level so I would describe his acquisition for a Championship campaign as optimistic at best.

The comment about him regularly appearing sporting strapping is particularly off putting.

Hope he is only signing number six or seven out of seven when we're looking back on the summer transfer business as a whole.

Still think we need at least four or five players who are capable of walking straight into the first eleven and performing in the Championship as opposed to squad fillers.

My knowledge of Rothwell is limited to say the least, but I didn't know very much about Smallwood last year and he turned out alright.

I agree though we need to be looking at proven quality that will immediately improve on what we already have. My particular concern is up front, having lost Antonsson and Armstrong, we've only really got Dack and Graham (big question marks over both Samuel and Nuttall). We were at times over-reliant on Dack last season and he's going up a division where things will be much tougher. We need at least a couple of options up there who we know can do it at Championship level, not gambles.

He has a couple of options apparently Rovers and Rotherham being the main 2 he is thinking about as they will offer 1st team opportunities

he also has options in the premier league but these will likely be reserve team more than 1st team and also foreign interest mainly from Germany (the Germans can’t get enough of young English players at the minute)

there is a possible trump card in Rovers favour though, he has been friends with Joe Rankin-Costello since they were nippers and went to the same school etc, played in same school team and so on they also socialise in the same group of friends and from what I’ve heard he wants to join Rovers firstly

But there will be a transfer fee involved and he isn’t on peanuts coming from City, so it’s not a certainty

if he does sign Rovers are getting a tough tackling holding midfield player who is technically very good, he hits a decent free kick to, he’s left sided also and can play left back, he won City’s academy players player, and coaches player of the year as a 1st year scholar and is apparently only one of 2 players in this age group at City who has been offered a contract to stay at the club, which it seems he has turned down to further his career, so fair play to him for that

so I thought I’d share what I know and give you an idea of what you will get if he does sign

Now this sounds more like it.

Different type of players, Davenport will be direct competition for Hardcastle, Thomlinson and Travis from the 23s and Evans, Smallwood etc from the 1st team

On Rankin-Costello he is recovering from a serious injury/operation at the minute too which will see him out until August/September

I wasn't comparing the players, but just saying that if R-C hasn't had his chance, he may not believe Davenport would get his chance either. Particularly given you've just named 5 players he'd be in competition with.

Yorkshire Post journo saying we have a possible interest in Roofe but Leeds want to keep him. Biesla looking to get rid of 15 players.

Wasn't he linked to Reading at 7 million last week?

As much as I would like Kemar Roofe I think he is way out of our price range. However, Marcus Maddison now that is an interesting name that could be just as lethal! Hoping that we can get Caddis, Whittingham, Gladwin out and send Hart, Nuttal, Platt on loan. Onwards and upwards! Exciting times, and glad to see our first signing across the line. Rothwell ins't a shabby signing but it is a very much wait and see how he develops i won't be one to pass judgement without seeing him play. First impressions is that he will fit right into the team spirit which is key for me!

We're weaker now than we were at the end of last season. We need to be significantly stronger. To do that we're going to have to spend some money.

I didn't realise the season has already kicked off

Don't think I said it had. Doesn't change anything though - we need more quality, the sooner the better, and it costs. Trying to do it on the cheap is a very dangerous game.

Think we need to realise that we can't just have a repeat of last summer. Last summer for a modest sum of about £1 million we were able to recruit a top quality League one side. This time round we need better players which cost more and we're in a League with clubs who can spend more, so a million on 5-6 decent League One players might not be sufficient.

It's a bit like a phony war.

We really won't know what to think until it is too late to do anything about it.

I can't remember the name of that cardboard "director", who said "Don't judge us till September?"

They really can't waste the opportunity to build on all the momentum and good will, can they??

Seems like the once talented Tony Watt is now focused on reviewing films and streaming himself playing Fortnite - what a waste

It is for sure but like so many of his ilk if they aren't prepared to live the life then it'll catch up with them.

A shame but unless he genuinely struggles with something fitness wise I've zero sympathy.

I’m not sure why I’m wasting my time replying, but you know as well as I do - if it simply came down to funds, wages and transfer fees, we would’ve returned to the top flight at the first attempt under Kean.

Cardiff hardly spent a penny in transfers last summer, other than Madine - and he hardly made an impact.

Clever, patient and long term business, not spending money for the sake of it.

Wouldn't have thought Cardiff's situation had any relevance whatsoever to our own. As a general rule of thumb if you get promoted and do not strengthen significantly you are going to struggle.
