All the more need for at least one more striker to come in and in adding an unnecessary midfielder to the payroll puts another question mark over the Reed signing.

Not for me.

Whittingham hopefully won't feature much. Travis needs a loan. Davenport injured and unproven. Smallwood looking a little suspect. Rodwell, god knows.

So we have two, maximum three specialist centre midfielders that we can rely on, and little cover for right back.

It's a good signing. He will improve our squad.

Isn't that the point?

I was wondering that, not checked the transfer news for a couple of days and checked last night and was surprised to see the transfer news regarding us was Reed not Brereton.

Strange once again how the cheap loan deal can get done almost overnight  but the major deal which involves spending decent money eventually, can't

I have literally no idea how you find that strange. Obviously a season long loan deal would take less time to sort than a deal costing millions

Not really Reed improves our starting 11 as he's better than we currently have so it's in no way questionable.

Multitude of midfield players when we don;t have many striker options I would say is very questionable

I am not completely sold on Chapman, but I would be disappointed if he went to Sheffield united. I still think he would be a risk as a replacement for Samuel though. He has had a lot of injuries for a young lad. Samuel will surely be out til at least January, so I would imagine we will be getting a replacement on loan. Tough on Samuel, it was a nothing incident that led to the injury. Just shows how easy these things can happen. It's getting harder and harder to see Samuel every really getting going here.

We only play one striker anyway. If Brereton signs, that's Graham, Armstrong, and Brereton that can play up front. 3 for one position is plenty, even before one thinks of Samuel and Nuttall.

We play with one striker  and have Armstrong Graham Nuttall possibly Dack would work as a false 9 and Brereton looks like he's on the way. Where as smallwood does not look up to it and Reed is an upgrade on him so it's a good one.

Graham can only play 60 mins at most; Armstrong and Samuel are injured; Nuttall is poor and Brereton plays for Nottm Forest last time I looked.

We need 2 strikers, not another midfield player who is likely to sit on the bench

Graham has played 90 minutes in a number of games this season. Armstrong will be back in a week or 2. We are about to sign Brereton

It seems you have a problem if Reed takes someones place or if he sits on the bench. Which is it?

I honestly think that if Mowbray gets us back to the Premier league, some fans will be on here pointing out that his record isn't that great as he signed Gladwin.

It's always good to add quality players to the squad, obviously I've no issue with that.

But I don't think anyone can deny that we need more quality in areas other than central midfield.....

We need players in center midfield. Mowbray expects the 2 in there to cover serious ground. Over a long hard season I am sure Mowbrays decision to stock up there will be vindicated. Besides, signing midfielders doesn't stop us signing forwards!

Our Squad assuming Brereton signs today as expected.

Keepers - Raya, Leutiwiler, Fisher

Right Back - Nyambe - Players who can fill in at Right back - Bennett, Lenihan, Reed

Centre Backs - Lenihan, Mulgrew, Downing Rodwell, Who can fill in at CB? - Williams, Nyambe,

Left Backs- Bell, Williams Who can fill in at left back? - Mulgrew

Centre Mid - Davenport, Evans, Smallwood, Reed Who can fill in Centre Mid: Rothwell, Bennett, Dack, Lenihan, Rodwell

Wingers: Conway, Bennett, Players who can play out wide:  Rothwell, Palmer, Armstrong, Brereton, Samuel.

Number 10's: Dack, Palmer, Rothwell Players who can play as a 10: Bennett

Strikers: Armstrong, Graham ,Brereton, Nuttall, Samuel.

Travis to be sent out on loan to League 1. Tomlinson to go out on loan if anybody wants him, he's not going to be a long term option for us

Whittingham, Caddis, Hart, Gladwin (Injured) surplus to requirements. won't be near the first team

Samuel you might as well take off the list as it appears that his injury could be a bad one.

Also Conway is very ineffective going forward these days

Graham is not a 90 minute player any more. He might well have played for 90 minutes on occasions but that is a dangerous game to play for both his and our sakes. We need options and depth here for a 50+ game season. Already we're seeing injuries with Armstrong, Graham and Samuel all injured or not 100%.

If we get Brereton it will leave us with Brereton,Armstrong and Graham vying for the strikers role so yeah could do with one more option not bothered If its just a loan or loan to buy.

Hope they hurry up and announce Brereton though as until he puts pen to paper and the club announce it then always a doubt that it won't happen.

Ya, exactly. So why are people moaning about us signing Reed? We have a long, hard season ahead of us

I bet if we sign 3 strikers between now and Friday, they would be complaining that we have too many strikers :)

To be fair, you can't possibly know whether that is true or not. Unless Mowbray has told you how many players he's allowed to sign on loan before the deadline.....

Fairly strong analysis but it highlights one big problem in the squad: wingers.

Bennett isn't really a winger, and is pretty ineffective ou there. He's much more of a central midfielder, and can more than fill in, in that position. He doesn't create that much out wide whatsoever. That's fine in a more defensive type game, but less so when we're trying to stretch teams. With Conway finished we've very short on natural width as Palmer and Rothwell both will have a tendency to drift in, and I'm not too convinced by Samuel as a winger.

Hopefully Reed can be a good right back, otherwise the options there are very shaky. Lenihan will always be needed at centre back, and Bennett seemingly everywhere in midfield, so unless Reed is competent there, that looks to be another hole in the squad. A few posters commented that he can/does when I raised the issue of concern for Nayambe's cover earlier, so hopefully that's sorted. But compared with other areas of the team, it still looks a bit thin to me.

Without Bereton which seems to be dragging on, we look a little thin up top too, especially if Samuel has a long term injury. Hopefully that deal will be done soon, and if Armstrong is also fit again soon we should be ok up front. Hopefully ok enough to send out Nuttall on loan too so he can develop more.
