Loan Window

TM himself today has said that both Bennett and Evans are carrying knocks, so add that to the Armstrong, Dack, Samuel, Davenport and Williams injuries already and it shows we need strength in depth. Evans also has quite the injury record too - so expect him to break down at some point (possibly after playing for Ireland :) )

Reed is an upgrade on Smallwood who has so far looked off the pace this season in a higher league. He also offers cover at RB having played there most of the season for Norwich in the Championship.

...... cos he ain't a striker

TM has already said today he is looking at possibly bringing another striker in due to Samuels injury - How many more do you want to compete for one position? Graham, Brereton, Armstrong, Nuttal, Samuel and even Dack has played there recently.

To be fair, you can't possibly know whether that is true or not. Unless Mowbray has told you how many players he's allowed to sign on loan before the deadline.....

We are about to sign Brereton and another on loan according to Rich Sharpe, so I am pretty sure that signing Reed has no impact on us signing forwards.

Do you know what a proper centre forward/striker is, ie a player who can play with his back to goal and hold up the forward line ?

We only have one - Danny Graham

Without him we currently have available two specialist centre mids and thin on right back cover.

Do you hate gingers? Be honest.

I love ginger biscuits. Had one with my morning cuppa

. Besides, signing midfielders doesn't stop us signing forwards!

Obviously it does as we have a limited allocation of loan slots. This is another reason why we should have got the vast majority of our business done during the permanent window and not be starting about now.

So Michael Owen or Thierry Henry were not proper strikers/centre forwards? There are different types of them.

Yes, ideally we could do with a similar target man/hold-up type of striker like Graham as backup and perhaps that is what TM is looking to bring in on loan. There are other ways to play to suit the striker that is playing though, Adam Armstrong showed that he was decent as the lone man upfront, it meant that we just had to play over the top to him or down the channels rather than expecting him to hold it up. Brereton will be similar to that I imagine but he does have a bigger frame and height.

We have a limited number we can include in a  match day squad. I doubt that will ever be an issue.

It would have been ideal to have the Brereton deal done before the transfer window closed, but at the end of the day ,it's one loan spot until January. It is pretty much insignificant and ultimately the most important thing is that the deal gets done

If we get ourselves a quality out and out winger (preferable if he is left footed) in before Friday we have to be thrilled.

Any outgoings: Gladwin, Caddis, Hart, Nuttall, Tomlinson, Fisher and Whittingham will be a bonus.

And even if we do have an injury spell, I'm sure fans would much rather see Joe Rankin-Costello and Stefan Mols make the bench over the likes of Gladwin, Caddis and Hart.

Fairly strong analysis but it highlights one big problem in the squad: wingers.

Bennett isn't really a winger, and is pretty ineffective ou there. He's much more of a central midfielder, and can more than fill in, in that position. He doesn't create that much out wide whatsoever. That's fine in a more defensive type game, but less so when we're trying to stretch teams. With Conway finished we've very short on natural width as Palmer and Rothwell both will have a tendency to drift in, and I'm not too convinced by Samuel as a winger.

Hopefully Reed can be a good right back, otherwise the options there are very shaky. Lenihan will always be needed at centre back, and Bennett seemingly everywhere in midfield, so unless Reed is competent there, that looks to be another hole in the squad. A few posters commented that he can/does when I raised the issue of concern for Nayambe's cover earlier, so hopefully that's sorted. But compared with other areas of the team, it still looks a bit thin to me.

Without Bereton which seems to be dragging on, we look a little thin up top too, especially if Samuel has a long term injury. Hopefully that deal will be done soon, and if Armstrong is also fit again soon we should be ok up front. Hopefully ok enough to send out Nuttall on loan too so he can develop more.

I'd agree wingers are the area i'd look to improve before the window closes. I disagree on Bennett though, i'd prefer him to be playing CM but he's still a decent option out wide, he balances the side quite well especially if say Armstrong or Palmer was playing on the left wing. He can get up and down and when he is position can cross (see Hull away). He's a good defensive winger and is 10 times more useful than Conway who is the alternative.

We're still a bad injury in the wrong area short of a problem. But I think we've got enough options everywhere to cope.

Hart is with the under 23s now. Where I would imagine he was signed for
