If Mowbrays cashes in on Raya to get a bit of spends and has a decent keeper lined up maybe free or loan to replace him I don't think that is too bad at all.

A crafty way to free up some funds without really making us weaker, the kind of wheeler dealing a savvy manager would do.

Lets see who gets the gloves first Tom. Jason Steele to make a comeback ?

Bad move in my eyes. Raya gets far too much stick. The lads still young. He's got years & years to learn and get better.

Good shot stopper, but terrible on crosses (and commanding his box in general) and he's always got a mistake in him.

We can do better - he's an Academy player, which is great, but I think that's clouding judgement a little.

Carson, Hart, Foderingham all linked within the last year. All three could do a similar job to Raya in terms of general ability right now. And two of them would be free/loan.

I'm drunk and Rovers still havent signed anyone.

Give me Keith 'The God' Andrews at this point.

Also keep Raya ffs

You're selling yourself short, CambridgeRover. I must say I was impressed by your ability when drunk, to bring in a reference to Keith Andrews' main contribution to our play!

But seriously; I was always one to cut Mowbray some slack but I'm beginning to lose faith in him.

I know that centre halves like John MacNamee don't grow on trees [before anyone else nips in with the punchline, "I know; they're quarried!"?] but our minimum requirement in this window has surely got to be signing a commanding figure as close to that great man as current-day referees would permit - he'd probably be on a minimum of a yellow card per game, these days! -  but essentially a leader for our defence.

And if TM can't/doesn't see that, then I fear he's surely living on borrowed time.

He made a lot more mistakes after that bang on the head he got. Came back too soon in my opinion. Name me a modern goalkeeper who commands the box ? Even Big Brad watched a few goals headed in from inside his six yard box.

If we could get a decent fee for Raya then take it, get an experienced keeper in (which shouldn't cost a lot) and then invest the rest on the defence.  If funds are tight then this could be a stroke of luck, getting a reasonable fee for a keeper that costs us more points than he saves.

I don't mind Raya lad is still young and only one championship season under his belt learning on the job after previous people with zero wisdom left him on our bench at a vital stage of his development instead of getting him games somewhere.  I feel we and he have paid a price for that and whilst he might come good how long do we wait around if we want instant improvement, it's such a key position next season here he'll be under the spotlight from the word go because of what happened last.

So if he has to look around the squad to raise money but not sell one of his main men then maybe it's a wise move but only as you say IF they get something in steadier.

Opponents don't take liberties around guys like him and Andy Todd. We're a soft touch to play against at the moment.

You have to wonder if that bang on the head continues to affect his game. Things he did previously without any thought may no longer be instinctive

Agreed, if it goes through I think we will gonna regret it. Better be a good replacement around.

The way I look at is - Can we do better ? Yes, I think we can even under the Chicken Chokers. Will we do better ? That's a hard one to call, maybe 50-50 at the present time.

Genuinely Raya isn't fit to tie Friedel's shoes as a keeper.

If they offer a decent fee I think we can replace him without much bother.

Yes, but we’re not going to sign Friedel (or someone of an equivalent standard) to replace him.

I can honestly see us starting with Leutwiller for the first game of the season.

Put Raya in a team with proper commanding centre backs and his flaws will be nowhere near as obvious. Won't be perfect but we are clearly looking at what isn't a priority position. It's all about the big ugly centre half. And if Mowbray doesn't see that as his latest comments suggest he has taken us as far as he ever will.

I do wonder whether TM is playing the market. Surely everyone knows we need a commanding centre half - and I am sure that reflects in fees and salaries being asked. Are TMs latest comments to give the impression we aren't desperate for a centre half to other clubs and agents.

Let's judge this window at the end of it - rather than getting too stressed when there is over a month to go.

Perhaps Venkys have seen he's done with £7M and won't risk anymore?

I've said it before and will say it again, IMO, he should have been sacked for that decision alone.

That financial commitment will, IMO, prove to have hamstrung the club's development.

I think it's scandalous.

I think Raya will develop significantly with good, specialist coaching.

The'boy' Benson hasn't really played the game and was doing community stuff with Carlisle not very long ago.  IMO, he's way, way out of his depth and therein lies a big part of the problem with Raya.

Can you imagine someone like Hart or Carson coming in and being told your coach is Benson!

I think coaching generally at Rovers once you're out of Johnno's hands is a cause for concern. We don't play like a well coached team even at this level.  As we were discussing early the movement off the ball is pedestrian most of the time. It's more like " Pass and stand still " than " Pass and move ".

His comments about not seeing the importance of overhauling the defence as important as he once did is both incredibly frustrating and sadly unsurprising in equal measures. Mowbray has neglected his defence in previous jobs which has eventually cost him his job, and has neglected it here throughout his stay which I suspect will conclude in the same way. Theres no chance of progression towards where he says we are aiming for if he genuinely has been fooled by a few games where we faced teams playing for nothing. The defence needs major surgery, we had the 5th worst defence in the league and if Mowbray doesnt see it that way, then we need someone who does.

Think you are spot on.

The big, big worries for me are Lowe and Benson (as mentioned above).  Saw Lowe at the Academy and was underwhelmed by his 'abilities' - IMO, such an uninspiring figure with so little presence.

Obviously, Mowbray and Venus are mates and IMO, neither has demonstrated they can organise or set a team up and successfully change tactics as the game dictates.

I remember when Sam first arrived and was asked about our defensive coach Winterburn - his remarks 'I'll sort the defence' and my goodness he did.

Mowbray and Venus were both defenders but, IMO, there has been little evidence to suggest they can solve our defensive woes.

So this is everyone we've talked about so far really on this 253 page thread. Reds are already at other clubs, Greens are here and Rae speaks for himself.

Frank Fielding - Joe Hart - Scott Carson - Jon McCracken - Joshua Rae (23's trialist)

Liam Lindsay - Jake Cooper - Grant Hanley - Patrick Bauer - Jack Rodwell

Ovie Ejaria - Will Vaulks - Jack Payne - Brandon O'Neill - Adam Maher - Paddy McNair - Ben Whiteman -  James Morrison - Stewart Downing

Any names I've missed here?

Luca Toni?
