These are just cheaper replacements for two fantastic centre halves that they’ve sold though.

Tykes fans are gutted and getting deja vu from when they last came up and flogged Winnall and Hourihane etc...

Time will tell.

They seem to be playing the market really well though. The players they lost had an air of inevitability about them, and have gone to ‘bigger’ clubs for decent fees. They haven’t hung about, seemingly cast their net wide and are quickly re-investing.

Just had a look at a look at a highlights package they put together on announcing the Diaby signing... lad looks a beast! We all know the potential pitfalls of getting too excited over a bunch of clips, but I can’t help thinking I wish we had someone like that.

Just been having a look at the business other teams in the league have done. One team that really stood out was Barnsley.

Not unlike Mowbray, Stendel has done a bit of a raid on his past club, Hannover rather than Middlesbrough in this case. But as well as a couple from Germany they have also bought in what look like two big young centre halves from Denmark and Belgium. I don’t profess to know anything about these players, and they might not be any good, but while no doubt helped by the fact they have a manager from Europe, their scouting network clearly stretches a lot further than ours.

I was looking through their business the other day and thought similar. What disturbs me a tad is that Barnsley seem to have a more extensive European scouting network than we do, based on what links we've had and the manager's comments.

So far we've only tried (as far as we know anyway) for Adam Maher. We probably did scout him and the Dutch league properly, but I imagine you could have got a similar list of Dutch league targets to our own by just asking someone in Dutch football, "Hey, who is the best free agent in the Dutch league who might be willing to play in the Championship?"

After that didn't work out, it wasn't long before TM seemed to imply we won't be using that market much after all. I'm still struggling to understand why he went from vaunting it so much, to that stance. Maybe he thought there was great value in the European leagues but has found out clubs and players over there want a lot more than he thought too? Or maybe he's had a rethink and only wants players with Championship experience this year. It seemed an odd change of tack.  I can't seem to find or remember what his comments at the time about this were, but I'm sure an LT article implied we weren't going to use the European market more than once or twice this summer. Anyone else?

Or maybe he keeps saying that they'll be in a fierce battle with Richie Smallwood, Elliott Bennett, Derrick Williams, Dominic Samuel or Jayson Luitwiler for game time! ?

I'm genuinely beginning to feel that anything above a 22nd placed finish come May, and a new manager, is the best case scenario for the next 10 months.

We (most likely) have 12 months (max) left with Dack and Lenihan, (not to mention Danny Graham, Stewart Downing, Bradley Johnson, Charlie Adam), plus we don't have a starting quality GK and STILL have a gaping hole at CB as it is, and it terrifies me shitless thinking what TM would do with that sort of money and that type of rebuild.

Maybe that's why we aren't shipping out the deadwood, planning for next summer! ???

Travis is half a season ahead of him. But I can tell you that everyone rates him as the best potential in the academy. Including Travis. Buckley is the one they fully expect to play PL football. It’s not just his ability either, also the most mobile and best mentally.

From what i have seen and its deffo not much Butterworth looked the better prospect

or maybe i have these two confused idk

I think Raya and Mowbray fell out, simple as that really. He dropped him last few games of the season after some pretty big errors, and then Raya wanted to go.

He's a great shot stopper, but his kicking is a atrocious, he's weak on crosses and always has a mistake in him.

Would have preferred him to stay, but it's no big blow to lose him I think. We should be able to find someone adequate.

Who needs not to be sold under any circumstances (because it is highly unlikely we will find better replacements, and they are out best players) - Dack, Graham, Travis, Lenihan, Rothwell. Anyone else in the squad I think is not only replaceable but also improvable. I include Raya in that, there's a decent chance we will bring in someone better.

I don't doubt Raya and the manager fell out after Mowbray (unfairly imo) singled him out for criticism and dropped him.

You just know what's going to happen though. Nothing will happen for a while then Mowbray will suddenly pop up in the Press moaning about how hard it is to sign a keeper because they're such a specialist position Clubs don't want to let them go in the first place and if they do they charge a fortune for a decent one etc.

Unless it's us obviously.

If he doesn't sign a goalkeeper and a centre back in July I'll happily borrow one of your pitchforks and get a lend of a nice big flaming torch Rev.

But for now we do need to give it a few weeks to see who else comes through the door. And goes out of it.

Sorry had a long drive, name I got was Travis with some prem interest , mowbray considering to strengthen elsewhere as we are stocked in mids but he is reluctant to sell as he likes him

Oh no no no.  I can see him selling.  Another player that made Tony look a prat so probably a goner.  I like young Travis

My thoughts exactly.

Not exactly up to Duff, Dunn, Jansen standards but on the basis we had 4 or 5 "crown jewels" in Raya Nyambe Travis Lenihan and Dack you have to wonder if it's one down with another one to go with Travis to follow due to him being unhappy about being on peanuts and then to top it off various midfield dross being brought in at ages 32 upwards to potentially push him down the pecking order.

Or could it be Nyambe frustrated at being behind the dreadful Bennett in the pecking order?

Either way I wouldn't be at all surprised to see at least one of them leave whilst you can just see the likes of Mulgrew, Graham, Bennett and Evans sailing merrily on until the end of their contracts.

Wouldn't you.

Judging  by Mowbray's comments it seems we can dismiss the prospects of a better keeper than Raya coming in. It sounds like we got an offer in we weren't particularly expecting and decided we needed the money to spend in other areas hoping we can get another keeper in a loan or a free.

Two problems with that, anyone permanent will be older and/or not as good and if it's a loan who does well  then we're left with exactly the same problem of having to replace him in twelve months time.

It seems a crazier decision by the hour. At least if there was a conscious decision to sell Raya and replace him with someone better we'd already lined up, whilst I don't agree with the assessment of Raya at least there'd be an elenent of foresight and planning to it.

The other point is that if we need whatever's left out of 3m after bringing another keeper in to spend elsewhere, how bad must the budget be?

He wanted to leave Simon and Rovers so we got rid

What would the feeling be in we lost out to Wigan for the services of Gallagher? I'd be peeved given that he has been our radar for so long and I think he can be very good for us.

I know that some posters are less enthusiastic about his signing, so would it be okay if he picked Wigan?

My feeling is that IF we are still in for him (as I suspect we are) then he is odds on to sign probably today. The only reason he would choose Wigan is for more guaranteed playing time. He has a relationship with several players and the manager at Rovers.

I expect Gally and a keeper this week. Maybe even a cb as well.

lets see...

It'll probably be all "well we should be looking for better" and so on and so forth but in reality that will be when I'll start getting concerned about this window.

Gallagher is very popular with our lads. Seems to be on holiday with them every two minutes. TM seems to rate him. I think he could have more to give here. I'll be really surprised if we're both in for him and he ends up at Wigan.

Give me a 5 minute warning to settle my nerves, Big Tone.

I go to Leyland regularly as I live very close. I just dont agree with you. He is nowhere near starting for the first team whereas LT is one of the first names on the sheet.  Hope he comes good but lower league for me.

Personally I was more impressed by Butterworth than Buckley.

“Well son, your going to have to fight for your place with young Jayson but if you are up for it the challenge is there”.

The worst thing about all this is that replacing Raya like-for-like doesn’t address the fact that there is no real competition for the number one shirt (lack of motivation) and a coach who knows less about goalkeeping than the guy who comes in (lack of development).

It’s a shame we can’t spend this “same budget as last year” on a package deal for a number one, number two and a decent coach. Marshall or Kuszczak, plus Fielding and Kiely (or Freidel), in. Leutwiler to the U23s and Fisher loaned out to a L1 side. All a pipe dream obviously.

Oh and we still need a cb.

If we sign a decent replacement for RAYA,what happened when/if that replacement is injured/ill? We then have to rely on Leutwiler for weeks /months.

If Raya were No 2, as he should have been, that prospect wouldn't have been so bad.

Instead, we're riding on a wing and a prayer.

So LT reporting we may sign up to 2 keepers.  Certainly seems that TM blames the keeper for our goals against.

Here's me thinking it was because our full backs allowed countless crosses and there was nobody who could win headers...

Not really, TM told Raya he wanted to sign a direct challenger for him. He decided to leave, ergo we now potentially need two keepers. It doesn’t change the fact that we need defenders and the manager has said that too...direct quote

”defenders are coming”

Charlie Adam: much as I like Adam as a quality footballer I can't see his temperament and tendency to speak out on what bugs him being something Mowbray wants to take on, The easy life is much more acceptable, to some.

I was speaking to a Blackpool supporting colleague yesterday, and he said Adam had been touted for the managers job there, prior to Grayson's re-appointment.

So, yes, potentially Mowbray might see him as a threat.

Long way to go before that happens. Only 2 out of the seven you mention have actually come in and only 2 out of the 5 you mention have gone out.

Might as well say 'Would people be happy if De Gea, Maguire,  Kante and Assombalonga came in and Raya Mulgrew Evans and Graham left?"

If what you're suggesting actually happenes though I'd say none of the 5 outgoings apart from Raya would be missed.

However I'd also say that none of the potential incomings would be any particular improvement either so no it wouldn't be a particularly good window.

It wouldn't be a good window because once again it does not sufficiently address the core problem---the defence. Full-backs needed badly, if we were to sign 7 why aren't 2 of them full-backs? We are also in need of another striker---totally dependent on Graham not getting injured.

Spot on, looks more dynamic and a lot stronger and more resilient.  I'd say he will break through before Buckley

I'd say it's unlikely either will break through for a while yet.

Totally predictable from Mowbray.  The same applies even more to our goalie coach 'boy' Benson who, IMO, needs replacing ASAP.

“At this moment though I think this team needs some experience behind it and a goalkeeper who has been there, seen it and done it and hopefully can help the defensive unit keep some more clean sheets.”
