Summer Transfer Window 2019

In this instance it wouldn't surprise me if, for once, the owners are not the problem. Mowbray assumedly knows his budget and was able to get SG's £5m transfer over the line without any obvious problems. We don't know if he has restrictions on how he can use his budget (eg. more available for young attacking players) but you have to assume he knows what he has to work with. More than likely we've dawdled too long on targets, other clubs have registered an interest and the process has slowed down as a result - especially if other clubs can offer better wages than us. It's ideally why you have a replacement pretty much lined up before letting a first teamer with no obvious replacement in the squad go.

I think that's exactly it. SG's transfer means Mowbray has less leeway in other negotiations. GK's agent increases demands due to interest from other clubs which means Mowbray has to go cap in hand to Venky's.

We don't have the infrastructure to sort things out quickly so everything gets delayed and put in jeopardy.

These comments are something to judge Mowbray on, from the end of the season. I wholehartedly agree, our current defence isnt good enough at this level.

He said that defenders are coming and he said the other night that hes still got a budget so I would like to think that he meant it and the City kid is one of a few, definitely need a left back aswell, plus someone with more experience. If we get to the Charlton game/deadline with only the City kid, id be incredibly dissapointed in the manager. If he completes the overhaul he identified in May, then ill be excited at pushing on up the league. We can only wait and see. The defenders we already have, Williams, Mulgrew, Bell, Bennett, they are still not good enough as at 2 months ago.

I agreed with him wholeheartedly when he said this and I was looking forward to a little more ruthlessness. I hope he hasn’t changed his mind or been convinced by those in front that Raya was the problem.

I remember vividly a game last season when Mulgrew was turned inside out and there was nothing he could do. He was injured/dropped not long after that. We replaced him with Williams who was an instant improvement but he needs a permanent specialist (conventional) CB to replace him, with Championship experience.

C’mon Tony. Stick to your word.

We don’t need any more defenders Roversfan98 - couple lads on Twitter saying our defence will be sorted once we get a GK as ‘Johnson in front of Williams and Lenihan will sort us out’.

Guess they didn’t see our ability to defend set pieces and crosses last season then. Some Rovers fans can’t be helped.

Some people choose to adjust their opinions to match exactly what happens/what Mowbray does. Which is fair enough, each to their own, but theres no need to constantly hound people who do have their own independent opinions, some of which are constructive criticism.

As you say, whatever you do around that defence, a better holding midfielder may aid its protection somewhat, and a goalkeeper might bail them out a bit more, but ultimately, them 4 (?) defenders are going to have work to do defensively each game, and ultimately, have shown more than almost every team in the league, that they are incapable of doing it. You can't cover up or totally protect an incompetent defence.

Experience in goal doesnt mean a command of the penalty box either, Carson a prime example.

This happened more than once to Mulgrew in League 1 as well, the difference being we weren't punished for it as often due to the overall quality of the teams we were up against. The warning signs have been there for some time with Charlie as far as his defensive weaknesses are concerned, they just came to a head last season when we were getting punished repeatedly for mistakes across the entire back four, with Mulgrew being one of the more regular culprits.

If we start the season with Mulgrew as first choice CB then this window has been a failure.

Also think it's fair to say almost everybody expected a new GK to be here by now, so little wonder there's some concern brewing.

Imaging thinking the phrase “black lives matter” would bring anything other than resentment or that justice is something to be meted out by social media and not the courts.

All lives matter FFS.

Look around, the world is going to shit and people still think that these divisive ‘movements’ are a good thing. The “you can’t say that” generation are the reason we have Trump and Brexit.

Spoken like the true middle class white man you almost certainly are....

Of course all lives matter but do you not appreciated that, for significant periods of history, this smug cliché you trot out did not apply for many who suffered endemic and systemic persecution.

You're the kind of guy who trumpets the beauty of the status quo whilst sticking your fingers in your ears and clenching your eyes shut and muttering about 'the good old days'.

Risible..

Mods - apologies bit I'm only responding to posts already on the message board.

Back to transfers - I'd probably be happy with Adrian and the young city lad, although one more defender would be good. After that we'd be good to go.

I am sorry what the hell is going on at the club. Deals drag out for weeks. No goalkeeper this weekend. Turning into a clown fiesta

My wife moved from one professional services company to another this week.

We expected it to be relatively straight forward and concluded on Monday- they are competitors although the new job is in corporate rather than private client and represents a big step up as she recently graduated as a self-funded mature Masters student.

What a stressful protracted process it has proved to be, only finally wrapping up at 5pm on Friday. She had already rejected other offers so it should have been a simple move from one company to another.

On that basis, I am not surprised transferring footballers can prove to be extremely difficult and lengthy when there are agents and perhaps other clubs trying to hijack deals. To be honest I don't particularly want Rovers signing players other clubs aren't coveting.

He’s an example of an experienced CB who could be available come the end of the window when the top flight squads start to take shape. Fair relevant to the transfer section?

Much else I can agree on. I doubt “nothing much is happening” but I do doubt the ease in which (not you) some assume business can and should be done.

Relevant to a Transfer thread but nothing to suggest its any relevance to a Rover thread unless you know something I don't?

But we have the added headache of owners on the other side of the world who are not easy to contact and probably are not that bothered if deals get done quickly or not.

It's a definite disadvantage that may result in us missing out on certain targets.

I know loads of things you’d don’t 47er (;)) but sadly on this occasion I’m hypothesising. Similarly to Olsson - with the way we’re moving (academy key to first team development) there are obvious reasons to name ex-graduates as potential targets.

Im sure there are plenty of other centre-backs in similar limbo around the prem.

If you think TM & Waggott are telling the truth, this doesn’t or shouldn’t happen now because annual budgets are agreed. Unless of course we are assuming the budget is something they can ask to increase.

It's been 'all but tied up' for weeks. There's a stumbling block that needs to be ironed out or approved in Pune .

ie Pune is the stumbling block. Would never have guessed!

I don’t know about anyone else, but I’m just harbouring some hope that I’ll see the starting XI tomorrow and the GK will be announced when they announce the team.

Fat chance!

Foderingham will play the first half for Rangers and the 2nd half for Rovers.

You're dangling the possibility of Hanley returning as a cause for optimism when you know full well there is no evidence at all that he will! We all know that if various players we would like Rovers to sign are signed we have cause for optimism! But it won't be that way will it? I could list the names of several players  who might be available and might come to us but I won't because its pointless and false.

In fact, its highly likely that given his wages, which I don't see Norwich subsidising to the degree that suits us, that they'll be stuck with him or he'll go to a richer club.

So, optimism based on known facts or informed speculation=good thing! And vice versa!

TBH - I am not surprised as we only have a limited budget - especially for wages. Maybe if we sold more Season Tickets it would be different ?
