I thought it was kind of common knowledge downing was signed for the wing back role, similar to bell - who he is to coach. Look at his last few seasons with boro and that’s the role he has been playing. Was also this role at rangers. He doesn’t have the legs anymore to be an out and out beat your man winger. Left wing back for his know how and experience , more defensive than attacking

But we’ve been playing 4 at the back all pre season?

If he hasn't got the legs to be a winger anymore how on earth is he going to cope at being a wing back?!

More Mowbray nonsense to me.

lol 1 speculative post on a forum and it is more Mowbray nonsense. Have a kit kat and take a deep breath

If he is left back and thats a big if.......could he really be worse than bell and williams. Certainy offers us a more dyamic approach going forward

He actually could. At least they've played there before and at least Bell is mobile.

I thought he's come in to play as inverted winger or as back up to Dack as a 10. No indication that we are switching to a back 5 in pre-season. Really haven't seen this coming

Came to shore up the left hand side from collapses late in games. Def a defensive signing more than an attacking , which is what he has been for a few seasons. People were asking why he didn’t have an assists or goals last term well it’s because that isn’t his game these days

Still think there is a winger to come. I wanted Jamal Lowe or Maddison but I’d settle for Alan judge. All likelihood it’s another prem lg youngster on loan, which aren’t my favourite. I’d rather have our own players to flourish

I don't want another winger in. Much rather use players like Chapman and Butterworth

Cooper signed a new “long term” contract with Millwall in December. Although the length wasn’t disclosed I can’t see that it’d only be for an extra year. I think he’d be a great signing, but I think we’d have to double that 4 million to get their attention.

Far more hopeful than confident that we will make some much needed investment in defensive improvements.

I think we could get Jake Cooper from Millwall for 5 mil. Millwall does seem short in terms of number so maybe they need a sale to fund the rest

Downing clearly going to be the left sided Elliott Bennett. From Mowbray:

Mowbray believes those qualities will be a big boost to Rovers in the upcoming campaign and were a key factor when considering his options to strengthen the squad.

"I think his ability to play in different positions is important," said the Rovers boss. "That's one of the main reasons why we've brought him here.

"He can play centre midfield, he can play wide right, wide left, he could even play left-back, serving the ball deep from those positions into the strikers, if the game dictated.

"People have learnt over the last few years that I like players with the ability to play in different positions - Elliott Bennett being a classic case at the moment.

I don't buy the Downing to left back/wing-back stuff. He has said in interviews that he was frustrated under his previous managers at Boro due to where and how they asked him to play.

Think his debut told everything you needed to know. Not saying he couldn’t play further forward but he was def signed due to experience of holding onto leads and shoring up that dodgy left side late in games

It’s from folk I speak to in and outwith the club, as I said I thought it was pretty common knowledge. Hence we are still looking at wingers

I get what you mean as a defensive signing in that I expected him to be the defensive winger that Tony loves but just didn't see him as a left back in a 4 or the left wing back in a 5 - not a bad option last 10-20 mins when we're chasing the game. Gotta say if he's been signing to play left back then thats a weird move from Mowbray

I think that's the sort of signing we needed given the amount of goals leaked late in games.

The worry is that he becomes one of Mowbray's undroppables and is shoehorned into the team ahead of specialists (like Bennett).

I'd be worried if we were playing with wing backs as I don't think we have the personnel for it anyway, but I really think Downing would struggle to play the LWB role. It's really a position for a younger player with a lot of energy and stamina. You're up and down the flank pretty much constantly - and if you don't do that then you're either leaving the team exposed at the back or further forward, depending on which area of the pitch the player prefers to stay in. If Nyambe could cross a ball he'd be a great shout for RWB, same with Bell at LWB. Unfortunately neither are particularly good at this, but I'd rather focus coaching those two on crossing/inside passes than put players like Downing in that position.

Not saying he is a cast iron left back, could even be the case that bell is behind him but def signed for his experience of seeing games out and defensive minded. I don’t believe he will have a big assist or goal Talley come the end of his rovers career

Personally I don't buy these comments and I mean no offence by that. In his signing interviews Downing specifically talked about how he likes Mowbray's (perceived) attacking style and that it would bring more out of him than his previous manager did (I'm sure that was Pulls and Karanka before that?). Sounds like he wants to get as far as away as possible from being a more defensive player.

That's not to say he won't play more defensive from time to time. After all, we know Mowbray loves playing people out of position.

I reckon Downing  is a fit lad for his age,but I think you are right. The modern full/wing back needs to have a serious engine. I wouldn't be expecting a 34 year old to do it at this level. He needs to be further forward linking up with Dack, Rothwell and whipping balls into the forwards.  We would just be complicating the left back position putting him there.

I’d argue If mowbray didn’t see him as an option for that position wouldn’t we be after a left back , leaves bell and at a push Williams, both of who struggles at times last season. Hart will go out on loan again I presume. Seen as an experienced head to coach the youngsters through late collapses as seen last season with bell and Armstrong not strong enough to stop crosses coming in late in games. I think if ur expecting him to link up with dack etc your going to be disappointed but hey it’s Blackburn and mowbray so you never know

By legs I mean an injection of pace not that he isn’t fit

The better wing backs are pretty rapid.

They need to be as they need to cover a lot of ground quickly.

If Mowbray has singed him to be a wingback/left back then thats a poor decision.

Do you have an idea of the wages Downing has been put on?

In fairness I don't think we've ever really heard anything from Mowbray to suggest he has a problem with the full back positions. Williams was publicly dropped last season, but whether that was more of a motivational tactic rather than an admission that we need better players at LB I'm not sure. We mainly heard comments from Mowbray about defenders not heading the ball (CB position) and a lot of comments about Raya in goal. Hard to tell whether Mowbray thinks we really have a problem at full back or not. I still think he sees Bell/Williams as 1/2 at that position with Downing there as a back up option in that position if necessary.

I think Downing is filling the Conway role precisely, obviously on the opposite flank. Not so much a left back, or even wing back (of a 5), but a defensive minded wide player to see games out when required. For some reason as wingers get old and slower, the consensus seems to be they suddenly become better defensively.

He'll be no more a left back or wing back than Conway was.

So, you think he's been bought to start from the bench and come on late to help the defence not to concede late goals.?
