Mowbray has also made about 10 substitutions. Does he know that he can only make 3 in a league game?

He either doesn’t get the rules or doesn’t want it.

Or maybe it’s just a pre-season game.

Let’s at least wait until Charlton before losing our collective s***.

It's pretty standard to start the last friendly with the team you plan to use on the opening day though. That's why people are worried by the defensive lineup and lack of Rothwell. But I reckon you knew that.

And lets be honest, weve no other defenders anyhow, bar ,nyambe, who would be an improvement, and weve no wingers so thats why strikers are on the wing. That will be the lineup no doubt about it and its to the detriment of the manager that we still have no wingers and 4 midfielders in defence. Hes imrpoved the forward line and centre mid, ill give him that.

‘Would we like more options? Yes. Yet I like to think I do care about my players, and it’s not the right thing sometimes to fill positions with loads of players and those who have been so good to us aren’t getting anywhere near it.’

Polar opposite to what he said at the end of last season when he stated that they haven’t been good enough. He’s simply not ruthless enough. Teddy Bear Tony.

On top of which, it completely contradicts the situation and what he has done. The defence ISNT filled with loads of players. The attack and midfield are.

Really hoping the stuff about the defence is smoke and mirrors as I'll be fuming if we start the season with no new defenders.

Shocking. Almost as if a manager is choosing to not share his entire transfer strategy with the general public.

If you were a defender at the club what would you be thinking? A few months ago you are terrible and would be replaced. Now my manager says he cares about me?!

I'll wait until the end of the window but currently playing Downing at LB is not making the best use of the transfer market.

I’d rather have my ex partner and her inane financial lack of ability doing the negotiating than Venus.

A man who’s a failed manager, non desired assistant unless working with TM suspicious property deals, poor European scouting with suspect Bulgarian agents at Coventry and the worst defence coach we’ve seen at rovers since winter burn.

What I don’t understand is why we’ve not said to Bolton take butterworth till January till your takeover and players sign. He’d get every game under his belt, at a good level. If they couldn’t pay his wages then I’m sure it wouldn’t be that bad given he’s a lower earner here and unlikely to get that many minutes.

Additionally our fellow neighbours Bury could do with a player or two. Good PR exercise for our club too.

Hard to disagree with this mate, to be honest.

Its nice to be nice.

Well if the aim of friendlies is to build confidence by beating teams and build fitness by giving all players good game time, then it would appear to have been successful, albeit against inferior opposition (perhaps Rangers aside).

If it is to put into practise a change in our style of play, then again it would appear to have been successful from what I've read from those who've attended.  We seem to be quite fluid & less reliant on a long ball up to DG to hold up/knock down.

If it's to finalise a first 11 to start the season with, then almost undoubtedly it's been less successful.  I'm not at all confident about the defence (as it stands) which I think we all agree seems no stronger than last season personnel wise, despite what TM said which is disappointing. That said, it's possible that with better midfield protection & ball retention we could become more game savvy & thus avoid 3 or 4 away drubbings (which in my view distorted our record massively last season) as well as avoid conceding late goals. TM though will lose (has lost?) face with many (me included) by not getting in at least one specialised & experienced CB.  I still think he will, but that's perhaps more blind hope than tangible confidence.

Going forward, I think we're well stocked with exciting options, so credit where it's due there. There's pace, power & trickery with any number of combinations in midfield & up front, and I think we'll give opponents much to think about in that sense.  BB especially should get huge confidence from his pre-season goal return, what an asset he could be.

I expect outgoings will be Smallwood, Nuttall, JRC & Grayson (probably all on loan), MacGloire too if 1 or 2 new CBs arrive. Buckley & Butterworth to stick around at least until January, see if they can have an impact as starters in league cup games and in Championship games off the bench. Johnson's promotion could have a huge impact there.

I'm giving the window 6 out of 10 so far. 2 more signings could make it 8 or 9; please Tony, Steve, Venkys, give us that chance to really push for it this season, it could be very exciting.

Or maybe he might be thinking - glad the boss is looking after my fitness as I am only recently back from the ACN ?

Recently? Their last game was over 3 weeks ago. So I doubt very much our fittest player needs wrapping in cotton wool. I know it’s difficult to fathom why, but Mowbray clearly wants to shoehorn in Bennett. I don’t understand why people would rather come up with nonsensical theories to defend silly decisions than question them.

Nonsensical theories like Nyambe not having any rest at all over the summer?

He went back to training late to get his rest. He is an absolute athlete. He has already appeared in other friendlies. Etc etc etc.

If he’s not sat on the bench in place of Bennett against Charlton, I’ll hold my hands up... I’ll even bow to an effigy of Mowbray if you like.

He will be though won’t he?

@Revidge Blue

In 2018/19 the PL top 6 teams sent out 96 players on loan - granted more than half were from Chelsea. These players should be learning their trade at lower PL or Championship clubs. I’m with @renrag. The loan market has been abused. It was meant for emergencies and is now used as a nursery for players. We should be talking about Buckley et al breaking into the first team, not potentially being loaned out. Same with Wharton. We give him another new deal and then loan him out to “protect our investment”. It’s hypocrisy. Not good enough for Rovers but good enough for Northampton’s bench - but if he makes it we’ll have the cash thanks very much. It has changed clubs’ priorities. A little earner on the side instead of trying to be successful on the pitch. All very well for the likes of a Venkys-owned Rovers but what about others?

Chelsea's 49 loaned out is ridiculous.

Pretty much quadruple anyone else.

The authorities should be doing something about that.

Not sure loan market needs scrapped. Maybe just capped.

Any team can only loan out a maximum of 5 or something.

I thought each club have to declare a squad of 25 players so why do clubs need more? If they had a squad of 25 first team and a additional 15 under 23s then the above cannot happen. It is ridiculous that Chelsea could loan out players and that its longest serving players have never made a first team appearence.

Isn’t Chris Samba a free agent now... I’d take anyone to be honest ?

The problems have been obvious for a while now and for TM to not have addressed these adequately is shocking. We cannot go into the season with a back line like the one we have. I am an advocate for TM and I think he has done a wonderful job for our club - But come on now.

This.

I believe in the loan market being a good tool for player development. I think it's the loan fees that have made clubs like Chelsea get ridiculous with it. I used to do the same thing as them on FM but only because it was just a game.

I don't see a need to cap the total players sent out, definitely not as low as 5 which would only detriment the development of many a young player. Just cap (or outlaw) the fees. Then clubs won't be so keen to amass so many as a nice little earner on the side.

Saw a rumour on here a week or 2 back that we had representatives in Glasgow, looking at a keeper and a winger, Celtic letting Sinclair go for around 2.5 mill, I wonder ?

I know his career has stalled somewhat but one thing’s for sure - he’s a lot more suited to that wide forward role than Gallagher, Brereton and Armstrong!

Imagine if Brereton turned into a wonderkid!

That would leave a few on here with a sour taste as much as people say they want him to do well there a lot who have gone way over the top in their criticism of a 19-20 year old player.

What would be an acceptable goal return for him this season in peoples view?

At least 10.
