We still have 5 more days to get in someone committed on a permanent deal. At least one hard cb.

What about the two fullbacks we desperately need?

Whoever comes in now is likely to equate to too little too late.

It will no doubt take Mowbray an eternity to let them join the "group on the grass" in any case!

They didn't have Mulgrew, Bennett and Bell in defence. It's not the result in isolation, it's a build up of issues that has been going on since last season.

Had a quick look on a Charlton forum, they genuinely can't believe they won. Treating it like they've just beaten Man City. That's how low their expectations were.

Tbf the LET interview is a better read...

'I’ve brought Tosin in so that won’t be the back four soon.'

So clearly expect changes in the next week or two.

The back 4 of today are all players who Mowbray praised for their defensive capabilities during the past week and why we were considered by Mowbray to be defensively ok. Now they as a collective are not.

Norwich had a bad start too- remember Southend away two seasons ago?

End of day - today means nothing long term but we’ve got to react!

Mowbray's comments since around February strike me as those of a manager at the end of the road, who knows there are problems he can't fix but tries to bluff his way through it even though deep down he knows he isn't able to solve what's wrong but desperately hopes something will click. The contradictions regarding defence from the end of last season to this season are very concerning. He said all the right things at the fans' meeting and agreed with most of the criticism, yet he hasn't acted on those words at all. Actions speak louder than words and we need to see some action from TM as soon as possible, or there is no reason to keep faith in him as he is clearly lost.

It's not their expectations were low , contrary to a lot of the negativity on here we did have A LOT of possession in the final third and after our equaliser there only looked like 1 winner us. we had a period of immense pressure for about 15 mins but could not carve out any clear chances. 1st goal Bennett passed straight to them and they countered, 2nd goal their number 9 beat Lenihan in air to head home. Hence why tosin at 6ft 5 must start next game!

P.S Bradley Johnson - cant remember the last time I saw such an accomplished all round performance from a CM

Did they lose to probably the worst team in the league who had a key striker out? What I do know is Sheff U actually had good centre halves. We don't.

Mulgrew and Bennett had better not be lining up against Fulham. Even if he is going to insist on Bennett and say Tosin isn't ready yet, put bloody Nyambe in ahead of Mulgrew if he's so convinced the lad is a CB option like he's stated.

I'd happily have Nyambe at RB and Magloire instead of Mulgrew, just to shunt those two out. Magloire isn't ready, but at least he might be in time. Mulgrew is done. I'd put a raw JRC at RB before Bennett. Just anyone to rid us of those two at this point.

This is all assuming Tosin isn't ready, a new CB isn't ready, Williams isn't fit...honestly, just any of our other options now.

Hard to see it happening except maybe Tosin coming in, as neither Mulgrew nor Bennett made way today despite being the worst two players on the pitch by a long way.

I haven't seen the game so I obviously take note of those that went, but I struggle to see how we looked like we were going to win the game when we only had two efforts on target. Charlton had five.

Only one game, but if we can't beat that standard of opposition then we are in trouble.

All so predictable and avoidable.

A worryingly unconvincing display from our "at least as good as Raya" keeper, too.

I fear this will prove a season too many for Mowbray.

Rubbish the save he pulled off at the end was evidence enough he will do well with us. He is not to blame for the goals we conceded Bennett and rothwell are

Who was it that said we have a new style of football this season?? I saw exactly the same feckin game I saw all last year.

I was going to say that!

Loads of possession---probably 70%+ (that's how it seemed anyway) but without creating much. Only one real chance in the first half--any connection at all and Gallagher would have scored but a difficult cross went through his legs.

I don't think they mounted an attack in the first 15 minutes but, out of nothing, a dreadful clearance from Benno and we're a goal down.

Responded early in the second half with a fortuitous own goal but our pressure deserved it. It seemed a matter of time before we got the winner but their defence withstood the pressure.

Our's didn't. 3 or 4 minutes of goalmouth action from them, never cleared, defence in panic mode and a simple corner was enough----again.

No new style---just like last season. Championship team with a League 1 defence and TM says we don't need anymore defenders. My arse!

One bright spot----the form of Johnson--quick feet for such a big bloke.

Oh---the away shirt does look better on than in photos!

A bad, bad day for us.

Clearly at fault for the first in my opinion.

Looked uncertain at times.

Christ it really wasn't all that. Any keeper would have gotten pilloried if that had gone in. I agree he isn't the culprit today though. But he doesn't look comfortable yet. Happy to give him time to click.

Mulgrew and Bennett have had plenty of time to find a better level than this though. Are they both under contract until summer 2021? That'd scare me.

I can’t remember being so deflated after a result. That was pitiful. I’m angry with myself that I’ve got tickets for next week. Waste of time. Such an awful start to the season. I’m not looking for heads to roll but there needs to be an immediate response otherwise this could get ugly fast. Completely ruined the weekend.

Will say that Johnson looked a massive step up in midfield. The only consolation.

Utter rubbish.

Slow, laboured, off the pace, what more can you say.

Charlton's savvy game management meant they saw out the game with ease.  Defensively, they looked far better organised than we did and looked quicker all over the park.

Mowbray must shoulder the blame.  Wrong selections. Should have started with Nyambe, Rothwell and Graham to name but three.

He said defenders were coming, well we need a premature ejaculation of them!

Tone was set from kick off, 40 yards back to Lenihan and hoof!

My views:

Walton 6: saved a third at the end following another Bennett dropped b0ll0ck but there was little sign of cohesion with our goalie and back four

Bennett 3: abysmal

Mulgrew 4: finished

Lenihan 6 steady

Bell 5: one or two moments going forward but the lad can't defend

Downing 5: flattered to deceive.  Created little.

Travis 5: quiet and disappointing.  Not kicked on

Johnson 7/8: head and shoulders above the rest.  MASSIVE improvement on Evans and Smallwood

Armstrong 4: a player without a brain

Dack 6: not the impact we expected

Gallagher 5: bang average just as I remembered him

IMO, Mowbray has to go.  We are going nowhere with him.

A bit hard on Travis and Armstrong but otherwise accurate.

Something relatively minor is confusing me. With this new passing based system the manager wants to play, why was our first kick off a case of pass it to our CB (the one with the least passing ability too) and lump it upfield? Especially when we seem to want to fanny about with it at the back when we have a goal kick. Odd.

You start with the ball in the middle of the pitch, but lump it mindlessly, but when you start with it at the back you try tippy tappy?

Get what you mean. Too many options at LB putting quality aside so realistically won’t get another in. Won’t mind Hart now. RB we already have a specialist in nyambe and he should bloody start.

They sat back very deep, we didn't shoot from edge of the area when we had possession there.

They were compact in the middle and forced us wide, downing put good balls in, we really should have switched to 2 centre forwards!

They countered a few times and that when they had all their shots

Early days but I still think we have more than enough in the squad for a comfortable mid-table season.

That's OK then? No need for any new defenders? No anger that we haven't signed them?

Other than simply attending with friends, I'm not sure what you're looking for but we've had this discussion before.

Does that make us the better team, though, or them? Sounds like we were set up completely ineffectively and weren't able to create anything useful, whilst they had a counter-attacking system which targeted our poor defence and worked. We had more possession for sure, but it doesn't sound like we did much with it, whereas Charlton made the most of what they had.

Did he really say this?

"Our Achilles heel from last year was there again I suppose. They didn't have to work too hard, particularly the second goal. We sit here with a defeat because of our inability to defend a corner. At 1-1, there was only going to be one winner."

So even before a corner is taken he, Mowbray, knows that we are likely to concede and he's done feck all about it.

I wish I could stop reading this madman's drivel but it's strangely compelling to see what fantasy he comes out with next.

Wigan fan I know rates Walton very highly, to the extent he thinks he may play for England one day.

Brighton rate him highly as he was not for sale only available on loan!

Funny how those who haven't even seen him play are making judgements.
