We are looking a better side. Why? Better players. It’s that simple.

Mowbray will have wanted that level of performance since he took over but players like Bell, Evans, Smallwood, Mulgrew, Conway are not capable of providing it (or at least can’t provide it anymore in some cases).

All I ask for my club is that it strives to improve each season. And last night was a sign of a club that is FINALLY behaving like an outfit with ambition. Here’s to the rest of the season.

All true but we are one more injury away from calamity in defence. Unless that gets sorted we are relying on a huge amount of luck.

It is a huge risk. All the more strange, when we consider the amount of money..we..er let's say..invested in Brereton and Gallagher.

I think Darragh is injury prone anyway

He is for a centre half. I don't know what they make centre halves out of these days. Matt Woods played every game in an era when centre halves and centre forwards kicked lumps out of each other !

Don’t disagree. I can ‘see what he’s trying to do’, but a weak spot when it comes to defenders means I foresee any top 6 challenge falling away.

Which is what is so frustrating. We need just a little more depth in defence and we are knocking on the door. Give the money we have wasted you have to wonder why that is.

Just a little more in the right areas...so frustrating...

It is no use waiting because we will be vulnerable to loss on the Dack/Lenihan/Travis front...and we will have to start again, when the loan players go back...

Agreed, Gallagher has got a lot of plaudits for his willingness and effort but its 4 games, 0 goals and hes not looking like scoring. Theres no point playing him wide when we have Rothwell, Chapman and Armstrong all far more adept there. We need our 14m strikers to step up to the plate this season, the moneys been spent and we need to become far more threatening in the final third. We are totally reliant on Dack and Graham because the rest have yet to show they can be relied upon.

And @chaddyrovers whilst the final ball definitely needs working on it is always a concern when a striker is not really getting into goalscoring positions, and when a striker hasnt scored for 21 games. I dont doubt his work rate but we havent or shouldnt have signed a 5m striker for his ability to run back as a wide man. He shouldnt be played out wide, he IMO didnt look totally comfortable there or offer an attacking threat in either game, he needs to step up and start offering an attacking threat and a goal threat. He definitely has more to work with than Brereton in terms of his power and his aerial threat but we need to get some goals back on our huge investment in that area. Armstrong needs to step up too.

Gallagher gives you a different option to Rothwell and Armstrong.

Yes definitely our final ball needs working on. at the minute our best chances are falling to midfielders. I'm not bothered who scores as long as we win.

How many of those games did Gallagher start up front and how many minutes has he played in those 21 games?

didn't offer any attacking threat in either game? Well clearly he did

I think plenty of  pundits and sports media in general are disrespectful to Rovers.

The 2 guys doing commentary last night were really good though. Does anyone know who they were?

Gary Weaver was main one. He is ex Century FM colleague of Andy Bayes of Radio Lancashire. He is one of Sky's North West based reporters.

The other was Andy Hinchcliffe, ex over rated player.

Yes he does offer something different than Rothwell and Armstrong but it still needs a lot of work to become effective. As a result he has not offered as much of an attacking threat as he has the potential to be.

What he does give you is someone who will back track and offer Bennett some help at defending which Armstrong in particular does not.

I want him to trouble the keeper which he rarely does.  This is an area where the team as a whole is sadly lacking.

we seem to go through entire games where the opposition keeper doesn't have to make a difficult save.

Its all very well playing Gallagher RW and quoting how successful he is at winning headers against a full back but what is the point if he flicks it on and no Rovers player picks it up? All it does is it adds a few yards to a long punt down field.

It may well turn the defenders towards their goal, let them try passing (make mistakes), facing that way.

I would have Hinchcliffe at his peak in my Rovers team right now, would you not?

Agreed that its a different option. Sticking a tall striker wide gives us a further option for a longer ball since we have become a bit more pragmatic and gone direct, as he tends to have the height advantage on full backs and he does put in the graft going back. Dont think he at all fits the technical type of striker you mention, not where his strengths lie.

Ive no idea but its still a worrying stat.

As I said, I personally disagree.

I think he should be played central if at all, and Graham is still miles in front at the moment. Gallagher a clear front runner as first choice back up to him though

I think what's promising about our team is we now seem to have a genuine goal threat from deep, in Johnson. I echo concerns that our forward players aren't delivering at the minute in terms of converting chances, but that will come. When you have the likes of Johnson and Downing (who both look like they could reach the 5 goal mark each) who can chip in, it takes the pressure off the strikers having to reach that 15-20 goal mark. I'd rather see us score goals from all over the pitch, than be solely reliant on a Dack or Graham to score all of our goals.

Gallagher made 6 app last season including no starts and 99 mins in total. The last 11 games for Birmingham he played for Birmingham he started 8 games out of 11. so there is 758 mins in total playing time there.

We will have to disagree on the technical issue.

We need to play the striker that is the best fit to hurt the opposition whether its pace on the counter or target man type.

I think the below expected goals is reasonable enough, but the reality is that only brings us to 67 goals. 4 more than last season, but still less than any team who got into the top 6 last season. We could really do with someone stepping up and getting close to 20, or more than 1 midfielder getting to double figures.

Williams-3

Lenihan-3

Bennett-1

Cunningham-1

Travis-2

Johnson-4

Downing-7

Dack-12

Armstrong-8

Rothwell-6

Graham-10

Gallagher-6

Brereton-4
