Surely TP would have an occupational pension as well as a state pension.

If his savings drop then his care will be funded by the State; presumably he has a house and this may have to be assigned to the local authority to pay for his care?

I am not against helping him and his daughter out but many of us face the exactly the same challenges and it is paid for from savings and property and then the State funding kicks in.

Yes, I was wondering that.

Unless he's moved recently I think he's in the same place as my mate's mum in Oswaldtwistle which specialises in dementia care.

That is typically more expensive than a "normal" care home, and in ball Park figures it's usually about £1500 p.w as opposed to £1k etc.

Perhaps State assistance would only stretch to a "normal" home? I don't know.

My Dad is going through a similar thing, albeit in his early eighties, and it's so sad to see ... Tony should be so proud of his daughter !

Watching things like this puts all the " silliness " around local rivalries in it's true perspective. All Clubs have their legends and favorite sons, and Tony Parkes truly is one of Blackburn Rover's finest. The " Up the Clarets " board has a post about Tony this morning, and there's much best wishes and sympathy being expressed, to which I should like to add my own.

 Good luck, fella !

I am always saying this to rovers supporters, let's concentrate on our own club and matches and put local rivalry behind us. Let's face it some of the abusive chants go way back to the 70s and 80s. I wish your dad well and thanks for the Tony Parkes comments. It shows not all rovers and burnley supporters go to chant abuse at each other.

Tony lived in the Wilpshire area in a lovely bungalow.  Think it was about 12 years ago, either just before or following the death of Tony's wife, Eileen, that Tony's daughter and son in law moved into the house with Tony.  Obviously, much will depend upon what legal action, if any, was taken over ownership etc.

Sunderland are donating £1 from every ticket sold for Jermain Defoe's return game, towards the Bradley Lowery Foundation.

Rather than putting an extra event on - could we do something similar?

E.g:

The big home game vs. QPR at the end of the month.

£1 from every ticket sold goes towards the funding for Tony Parkes care.

Market the hell out of it, get people on board with it, and get a load more fans in the ground. It would be enticing for Rovers fans of all ages given Tony's status as a true Rovers legend.

Obviously benefit #1 is money towards the care of Tony.

Benefit #2 for Rovers - Positive PR without having to fund an extra game, pay staff etc. The £ lost on every ticket would comfortably be remade by extra ticket sales and money spent in the ground. Plus possible future sales with a win made more likely by more fans in the ground for what could be a huge game in our season.

Easy and effective.

(I would rather £5/10 donated per ticket - just using the Sunderland example as a starter)

A great idea.  Simple and effective.

He wasn’t really a defender to be fair but your sentiment is spot on anyway. He was the perfect foil for Mecky in the midfield at his peak.

Tony joined Rovers initially as a striker from Buxton over 50 years ago.  I might be wrong here but I seem to recall Tony making his Rovers' debut at Bolton in a League Cup tie - it was a miserable night as we lost and Tony also looked lost!

However, he was converted to a highly effective midfield player.  Not an eye catcher but boy, when he missed games through either injury or suspension you didn't half notice!

A really nice bloke who always had a word for you.

Blackburn Rovers announce series of events to support club legend Tony Parkes

By Cal Gaunt  cpgauntNews Reporter

BLACKBURN ROVERS have announced a series of upcoming events designed to support club legend Tony Parkes.

The club says it has been in close contact with Tony’s family over the past two years, since it was revealed that he had been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease in February 2020.

Mr Parkes, 72, who still regularly attends games at Ewood Park, made over 400 appearances in Rovers colours, scoring 46 goals, and had six successful spells in caretaker charge.

Having dedicated almost his entire career to the club, Rovers say they are fully committed to supporting Tony and his family during these tough times, with a number of fundraising activities now confirmed over the coming months.

To mark the 20th anniversary of the club's Worthington Cup final victory over Tottenham Hotspur, the club will host 'An Evening with David Dunn and Craig Hignett' at Ewood Park on Thursday, February 24, with all proceeds going to Tony Parkes, who was a key part of Graeme Souness' backroom staff for the victory at the Millennium Stadium.

Dunn, who scored 59 goals in 377 appearances for the club over two spells, played the full 90 minutes in Cardiff 20 years ago, while Hignett, who netted in both legs of the semi-final success over Sheffield Wednesday, came on for the final 15 minutes, having helped Rovers secure promotion to the Premier League the previous season.

On Thursday, March 31, Blackburn Rovers Community Trust will be offering fans the opportunity to experience a matchday in the same way as their Rovers heroes by taking part in a truly memorable match on the Ewood Park pitch.

Supporters will bid for the chance to "live out their dream" and take part in the charity fixture, with 50 per cent of the funds raised being donated to Tony Parkes and the other half being put towards community projects – such as Remember the Rovers – that support people with dementia, as well as other initiatives aimed at tackling social isolation among the elderly.

In April, Rovers will dedicate the home fixture against Blackpool – a club Tony also had close connections with – to raise further funds.

The game takes place at Ewood Park on Saturday April 9, with various fundraising and awareness activities, including bucket collections and a memorabilia auction, planned in the build-up to the local derby and on the day itself.

Lastly, the club have also held positive discussions with an individual, who wishes to remain anonymous, who has pledged to commit to a monthly amount for at least the next six months to support Tony and his family.

There will be other events planned too by the club.

BRFC have always been known as a family club.

Other than Jack Walker, nobody has dedicated more to Blackburn Rovers in the past 50 years than Tony Parkes.
Please everyone, take part in the forthcoming events and in addition to enjoying yourselves, all proceeds over and above costs, will be donated to Tony Parkes' family.

What a prima donna prick 😞 genuinely really disappointed to hear that.

I didn't even realise ex players expected any kind of payment and pampering for these types of charity events (how naive am I!)

Stanley Matthews was notorious for it. Having said that players were on £20 a week then.

No no no ... I've just been chopping onions.

Fantastic - thanks for posting it.

Seeing that video and nights like Tuesday makes me realise just how much Rovers mean to us and are part of the fabric of our lives.
