Football League Suspended

When is this fantasy of finishing the season going to be extinguished, the season should have been ended weeks ago. Anyone with the slightest bit of common sense can see that it is not going to restart and neither should it.

The PL clubs want to restart the league if they can. Nothing wrong with discussing the issue.

Championship and EFL teams talking today. Supposedly coming up a plan

They can discuss it all they like but the situation regarding Coronavirus is not going to change for the foreseeable future. The only reason a restart is being discussed is that the clubs and the league are terrified about having to give back some of the TV money. If there was no money involved in this then the season would have been cancelled weeks ago as it has been in every league from level 5 downwards.

You talk in the corona thread about being sensible and using common sense. Surely anyone with an ounce of common sense can see that there is no way that football can restart in the foreseeable future.

It's not that simple. They don't want to give tv money back because how else do they pay the players. And if they don't pay the players, can they just walk from contracts? If clubs have to pay the staff, but don't get the tv or some streaming money, they will fold without serious intervention.

It appears football is screwed unless they play this season ASAP.

The PL and EFL have discussions. They seem to making progress. Let's see how German get on this week. Spanish and Italian are planning to get going around the time as our rumour return date?

Did you see my post about FA saying promotion and relegation will happen?

It could be year or 18 months before we have vaccine or a treatment for this virus. So do we shut football and sport for that duration? What about players wages? How do clubs pay them without TV money? Did you see EFL Chairman Parry's comments about TV companies pay 3 billions and all money went on players wages from PL?

What about non playing staff like groundsman, club shop staff, etc?

What about our lower league clubs who need money to survive?

There is no chance that season will finish. There had barely been any deaths when football was suspended originally since then at least hundred of thousands have been infected by the virus and ten of thousands have died and that is with a lockdown and social distancing in place. The virus is no less of a risk today than it was when football was suspended, to think that the season will finish is pure fantasy.

Morally and logically yes. But if this goes on until a vaccine how do you pay the players without clubs going bust?

That's the panic and then need to get a resumption.

Sadly I think that it is quiet possible that clubs will go bust but whilst social distancing remains in place I don't see how football can restart. And the CMO said the other day that social distancing is likely to remain for at least the rest of the year.

Clubs will want it with no money coming in. If players see their money drying up, they will push for it.  It will happen sooner or later.

Different level of close contact, but horse racing will restart at the start of June because jockeys and trainers are all unanimously pushing for it.

The clubs might but will the players? Those in the lower leagues maybe willing to take the risk but will the multi millionaire premier league players want to take to risk. Even if in the unlikely event football were to restart it would still be unlikely that it will finish. Look a countries like Iran, China and South Korea where they have had to put some lockdown restrictions back in place after lifting them. Then you have countries like Germany who have lifted the lockdown and are already seeing their R rate now back above one. Coronavirus is no less dangerous now than it was 2 months ago.

As for Horse Racing it is completely different to football for starters it is not a contact sport (horse racing that is). Look at France for example horse racing begins there on Monday but football will not begin until September at the earliest.

Why don't we see how the German season goes for a couple of weeks and keep having discussing between them to formalise a plan to move forward. The EFL talks seem to be going well according to reports and the PL clubs seem to want to return.

They will be promotion and relegation between all 4 leagues whatever happens.

But without the money from TV money you are looking at the vast majority of clubs going bust, non playing staff unemployed and Players wages to be paid which they will get even if the club go bust under the Football creditor rules but the fans who support that club get nothing but a bust club.

Other sports like Horse racing and Cricket are talking about June/July Return. They are reports in the USA that the NBA which is contact sport and sport where you have to be close to your opponent will return in the month or 2

You have some good points above @Hasta

We haven't said this virus is no less dangerous but trying to find a way forward whatever that is. Whatever that is. Whether it end the season now and think about next season, or restart the season, or delay the restart until July/August even tho UEFA would like it end by July

Germany are in a different situation to us for starters they have a competent government who have handled the crisis well. We've had nearly 5 times the number of deaths of Germany and more confirmed cases despite them having a superior testing programme. Also since German clubs have been back training multiple players have tested positive, a whole team is in isolation and the countries R rate is back above one. With a bit of luck the German's might get a couple weeks of football but they won't finish there season.

Leadership from FA chairman Greg Clarke tell PL clubs that there will be relegation and promotion this season when the season ends with the games being played in full or season ends and they use points per games season.

The two L words are obviously of paramount important to someone (‘s wallet).

If City were clear, and Rovers and Wigan had been in the top two of the Championship it would have already been called off by now.

Much like FFP, all decisions are taken to get the clubs with the highest fan-density into the PL and keep Cinderella clubs well away from the ball.

Looking at the way the virus affects BAME people disproportionately I would imagine the BAME players in the Prem won't be too keen to give it a go. Given the numbers in the Prem they will be very influential  in any decisions regarding a restart.

Has anyone said why that is yet? Is it a genetic predisposition?

I thought it was because of the proportion of BAME people in jobs were the virus was most prevalent.

Would BAME footballers really be any more susceptible than their white (is that the right word?) counterparts?

Some clubs are back in training at the minute.

But like I said early the German FA and government have said games will go ahead this week..let's see how it goes 1st whilst both PL and EFL continue talks between them and try to come up with a plan forward whatever that is. When they restart June or end of July or end now and focus on next season. I'm asking for a plan forward. That's main point whilst trying to protect all 92 clubs the best way we can. And if we arent continue the season full stop then how do we move forward when players will want paying when clubs dont have money to paid. Are players going to take a massive paycut for this period of time whilst there is no live football?

Its does look that way but I rather wait for that report to be publish at of this month. Did you see my post about this on in coronavirus thread?

He’s absolutely spot on.
What (most) people are failing to realise is that health is miles more important than anything else. As a match going fan I’m missing football a lot, but it’s not right for it to return at the moment) for me until fans can be in stadiums),

What happen if we dont have a vaccine for a number of years?

We dont have any football for years? Most clubs would be bust and thousands of non playing staff unemployed.

Fans being in stadiums won’t happen until there is a vaccine. We could be writing of next season at this rate.

Testing and behind closed doors games are likely to go ahead. What fans should do - if they feel so strongly - is boycott all televised football during this time. At the same time players should also refuse to play. It would be a very interesting twist but won’t stop this season being concluded one way or another.

It doesnt have to be as black and white as that. The numbers are still far too high to risk finishing THIS season, and besides, the clubs most at risk would be clubs further down the pyramid where the Leagues will not resume anyway. The debate is about finishing this season, with bollocks like points per game brought in making things all inconsistent and various things affecting the scepticism anyway. But ultimately, the only priority is health and there are still too many deaths each day to justify rushing through the season. Null and void, then start from 20/21.

Rather than rush through a quarter of a season whilst the numbers of deaths are still so high and the risk is still so high. Wait a couple of months when hopefully the numbers will have come down significantly. Where players are potentially going to be much less afraid. (Todd Cantwell, Sergio Aguero, Tyrone Mings and Danny Rose have all publically expressed doubts recently) With Premier League players (as well as Bundesliga 2, Serie A and La Liga players which for me all should also not finish their season) its just not feasible unless money is more important than health.

Logistically, the side of it like legalities and financial which are far secondary to health and safety, it also is much easier. Teams dont have a conflict of interest in terms of their current league positions, its a level playing field.

Plain and simple, health before business. That is clearly not a motto you abide by.

I'm generally agreeing with you, and of course the players won't want to take the risk.

But, again, the players have to accept that they will no longer receive their whopping salaries that have made them multi-millionaires. And I'm not talking about just dropping 20% off their wages. At some point soon players would have to take massive, massive cuts as it is unsustainable. And when that happens, the players will either decide it's time to play again or throw the toys out of the pram.

Premier League and Champinship clubs are not going to agree to wait until a vaccine is in operation, and during this time receiving no incomings but having to pay out millions in salaries. Players won't like it but they also won't like the only alternative. Money will talk.

But if you actually read my posts on this I've asked for a plan forward. Did you just ignore my post on this?

Here the post

But like I said early the German FA and government have said games will go ahead this week..let's see how it goes 1st whilst both PL and EFL continue talks between them and try to come up with a plan forward whatever that is. Yet again you have ignore an important point by FA Chairman Greg Clarke that they will be relegation from the PL and promotion from the Championship.even if the season doesn't start up again. The FA have overall say on this. So the season wont be null and void now. Do you now accept this?

Clubs in the lower league matter just as much the PL clubs in terms of surviving this crisis.

No one is saying that Health and Safety isnt important tho what I and others are after is a plan forward? Do you now accept this point?

I havent said put business before health tho so please dont post this lies cos it's simple untrue.

Are players going to pay cuts if we dont play for long period of time to keep clubs afloat cos PL clubs arent going to get money from the TV companies?
