This team would take some beating!

                              Friedel

Berg        Samba        Hendry       Le Saux

Bentley          Tugay         Batty     Duff

                     Bellamy      Shearer

It would. As I said earlier, potentially Dunn in for Tugay, but I'd have the rest.

I agree with you about David Batty. A very under rated player.

Yup agreed.

I loved that signing as my mate was a Leeds fan and Batty was his favourite player - he was double gutted.

Tbis is the one. Maybe Savage for Batty but the best players in every position.

A twist on this (I'll post my team later):

The best Rovers PL XI, but you can only have one player from each country.

                                                      Friedel (USA)

Salgado (Spain) Hendry (Scotland)   Nelson (New Zealand) Le Saux (France)

Emerton (Australia)      Tugay (Turkey)   Duff (Republic of Ireland)

                                                       Villanueva (Chile)

                                      Shearer (England) Bellamy (Wales)

Most is quite straightforward but it gets difficult in CM - hence the youtube sensation himself getting in. Le Saux sounds french so that will do. Either him or Bjornabe.

Midfield is where it gets tricky - and you have to cheat to get Salgado in. He wasn't a great player for us.

Berg and Lucas Neill (if you dropped the loyal and overall fairly average Emerton) are alternative choices at right back. Givet could go at left back or alternatively Bjornebye. Samba an alternative at centre back and of course McCarthy and Santa Cruz amongst the alternatives up front.

Midfield is more tricky. Gillespie could be a shout for the right wing. Nzonzi has been mentioned but whilst his first season was decent under Allardyce, overall I found him underwhelming and in his last season, in an admittedly difficult time, some of his "performances" were bordering on unforgivable, I particularly remember one at Swansea away where youd struggle to find a better example of a player that couldnt be arsed. Obviously has talent hence his CV but certainly not a favourite of mine.

Bohinen was good in midfield for a while. I liked Santa Cruz and Benny but Bellamy was in a different class for me.

Yeah, i wanted Neill there really but then i would have had to find a non-English right winger that was worth a place. So went with Emerton as the Aussie and put Salgado at rb.

To point 1 - hypothetically this works but in practice it would not for the reasons you stated. I'd have David Batty in there, probably for Tugay as Dunn has more goals in him. Batty is overlooked by many Rovers fans. He won player of the year ahead of 30 goal Shearer in his first season. He was class. He got injured and hardly played in 94-95 then left for Newcastle shortly thereafter. Another nostalgic what if pick is Paul Warhust. Without 2 broken legs he'd have been in the starting 11 either at central defence or central midfield.

To point 2 - Rovers were never blessed with world class centre halves, but had plenty that were strong and organised. Hendry was no footballer, but he had guts galore. Samba was a physical presence. Nelsen was cool and collected. Henchoz was good too. My off the wall pick - Patrik Andersson. Signed at the same time as Henning Berg (the first time). He couldn't get a game at Ewood but won a Champs League with Bayern Munich a few years later.

Watched an old motd featuring Sheffield Wednesday v derby the other day a couple of goals from warhurst playing up top such a shame we never really got too see the best of him he was a superb footballer.
