Football Italia

Recommended Posts

I sometimes pop onto YouTube and look up some of the Football Italia (Channel 4) episodes from the 90s, especially on slow days like today. Anybody else have an affection for that show? Serie A was one of (if not) the best leagues in the world at that point. I also remember having a peaked interest in Sampdoria when Sven was incoming! Karembeu. Mancini. Veron. And so on... All these players we might have had!

Here's one from shortly after Rovers being crowned PL champions if anybody is bored and looking for a lazy watch! Main story is about the future of Roberto Baggio at Juventus, and just several minutes in, notice a Rovers old-boy playing for Genoa...

There was a channel 4 nostalgia look back at Football Italia which was class.

Apparently James Richardson wasn’t even into football when he was approached for the job, he just spoke very good Italian!

Can you imagine today's reactions to things like "Bhuddist Bobby" (Roberto Baggio) and "Who's going down? Well the actress says... never mind" 😆

"£8m for Baggio... Add in wages for three years to total £16m, that's the sort of money you get a set of British Gas chairmen for" 😄

Actually what got me watching today was seeing that Everton had signed Allan. Ancelotti must still have some good links at his old club, Napoli!

Never thought I'd see a Football Italia thread on here! I'm a big Italian football fan.

Last few weeks I've been working my way through these - https://www.thetotallyfootballshow.com/feature/so-you-havent-got-any-football-to-watch/so-you-havent-got-any-football-to-watch-gazzetta-football-italia-last-lost-episodes/ . Some 'lost' Gazzetta episodes, then there are three more links at the top of that page to similar pages. Probably around 10/12 episodes overall. Not sure if there's any overlap between these and the ones on YouTube, I'll certainly be checking YouTube for others once I'm done with this batch.

As a big Serie A fan who unfortunately was too young for the 90s heyday, they've been a brilliant watch. What a league - the 'seven sisters' as they were known were all littered with genuine world class talent.

"As Barry Venison once said to his hairdresser, that's enough highlights for now" 🤣

I was still playing 5 a side around that time. It encouraged me to get a Samp shirt to wear from a shop in Manchester that specialised in foreign shirts. It was either the Samp or the Napoli  shirt.  Best quality shirt I ever wore.

Used to watch this at my Nan's on a Saturday dinner-time after walking up with chicken from the old market! Fiorentina was my team because of Batistuta and I remember training with Peter Devine at Feni Rec with their shirt on. The good old days...

Sunday afternoon - never missed it. Remember Lentini getting in a car crash for some reason. Think he was the record transfer at the time. James Richardson had the best job in the world - sipping Italian coffee and chatting football.

Baggio was god!

I think Cloughie might have been the first to publicly speak out against it back in the 70s.

My Italian team is still Sampdoria. That kit... 🤩 It still hurts a bit that we went from almost having Sven and getting back on track with some top players who might have followed him here, to having Dario Marcolin on loan. Although to be fair to Roy, he did have us back where we wanted to be for a little while before it all went pear-shaped.

Well I don’t like to brag but I’ve been (trying) to read a Gazzetta Dello Sport this very morning in Palermo - with pastry and cappuccino, of course 💁‍♂️

Cagliari were mine. They were crap but they had that halved kit.

St. Elia (?) stadium featured in Italia '90 for England vs Republic of Ireland if I recall. Before Cagliari decide to shut off the ends behind the goal and put some popup stands there.

It's interesting watching the Italia '90 review (can't remember which), and everything is absolutely buzzing around St. Elia from a helicopter video shot of the night of the aformentioned match. Now, it's a sad derelict shell with a nasty popup stadium next to it.

I cried when he missed that penalty in USA 94. And it's probably the reason I've never had a soft spot for Brazil (not that it was their fault of course).

I used to love Football Italia.

My memory is that it was on a Saturday morning. Live games were on Sunday afternoons.

Italia '90 set the stage for it. Serie A had the best players in the world back then. I remember when Ruud Gullit came to Chelsea. He was their best player by a country mile and was close to 35. He was in his prime at Milan, along with a lot of other players. Klinnsmann too. I'm sure that he was 30+ when he joined Spurs. He was another who was class.

The divine pony tail.

Jack would have brought him to Ewood but his family blocked it.

Imagine the Premier League winning team plus Zidaine and Baggio.

Instead we got Matty Holmes.
